Summer Brings Weddings and Bug Bites! : wedding beauty health san diego 12 670px-Mosquito_2007-2[1]

I fear summer for one major reason! Les Mosquitoes!!! They find me, they eat me, and they leave a mess of destruction behind them. It’s sad because I rarely feel them on my skin. So I can’t ward them off before they eat me. I have tried everything: the belt clip that fans repellent around me, citronella candles, deet sprays, etc. I won’t even start itching until the next day. About 12 hours after a bite, I see these…

Summer Brings Weddings and Bug Bites! : wedding beauty health san diego 22 IMG_3455

After another 24 hours, they turn into these…

Summer Brings Weddings and Bug Bites! : wedding beauty health san diego 32 IMG_3464

This is the back of my legs. Scary looking, aren’t they? Can you believe that this happened on a night when I was wearing the Off! personal fan, had 4 citronella candles surrounding me (no exaggeration. promise!), and sitting on a chair. That’s right! They got the back of my leg through the chair. Those crazy blood thirsty mosquitoes!

If this were any other summer, it’d just complain about the pain and discoloration and move on with my life. But this isn’t just any ole summer. This is the summer I am getting married! This is the summer that I was supposed to look my best. I suppose I shouldn’t be too upset because I’m wearing a big wedding dress with a long skirt. But what about the bachelorette party in Vegas by the pool and the mini dress for the clubs? The wedding pre-party at the beach? I guess Mr. Hot Wings will be certain no one is going to try to hit on me when it looks like I’ve got some kind of STD running down my leg. Now I’m talking about a “sexually transmitted disease” and not a “save the date” (wink wink).

The itching has subsided, and the welts are now dark shades of brown.

Do you have any tips for quickly getting rid of these before my planned wedding events? How can I prevent these suckers for the next month and a half before the wedding?

If you figure out how to ward them off, let me know. When they bite me, mine swell to about twice that size. I feel your pain, and they are oh so itchy!

Awe what happened to that cool blue sunscreen + bug repellent from Avon that you ordered? After reading your post, I ordered some for myself since I, too, always attrack those pesky suckers, and I must say I used it last weekend and it actually worked! I was able to sit out in the backyard without a bite. Meanwhile…I heard regular neosporin/ointment type medicine works well to reduce the redness and swelling. But if it is already turning brown, I think that means they are healing. So after a few exfoliations in the shower and you should be good to go.

I’m sorry Hotwings - it was Mrs. Pug that got that lotion. See her post here: http://www.weddingbee.com/2010/03/04/bali-i-am-still-coming-for-you/

Wow, glad to hear that I’m not the only one except mine is poison ivy all over my arms. The dogs get it on them and then I pet them. Awful.

Those bites look kind of like sand fleas or no seeums, which don’t usually show up (at least on me) until the day after I’ve been bitten.

Off makes a yard spay that has worked for me when I’m having outdoor events. You just spary your yard, bushes, grass, pretty much everywhere and it helps keep mosquitos at bay. I may still get a bite, but I’ve started using deep woods off (30% deet) and have found that the two combined are pretty effective for me and I used to get bitten ALL the time (even when no one else around was being bitten).

No seeums or sand fleas, I have no idea what to do about them.

I have the same problem…but mine look a lot bigger and sometimes I develop water blisters - its called skeeter syndrome…and its one of my concerns for wedding day…not so much of how it looks but whether it will hurt. i found that Zyrtec works the best. It keeps them from getting so big. I have only taken Zyrtec after getting bit, within that 12 hour window you talked about, but I read somewhere that if you take zyrtec before you get bit, that it will really minimize the reaction

how did you get pictures of MY legs!!!!????? LOL - thank you for asking this question. I’m getting married in August, and bugs are a real concern. I like to go running in the evenings but lately the no seeums have been out of control! :( I look forward to hopefully finding some remedies!

I get bit up all the time too, no one else around me does, just me! If I can feel the bite, I put on AfterBite, it works wonders to kill the itch right away so I don’t scratch and make things worse. I have used it the next day to kill the itch too if I didn’t catch it right away, and it doesn’t work as well, but it works enough so I don’t itch like crazy, and it seems to make the welts not as huge.

Mine swell up too - I’m actually kind of allergic. I would recommend a stronger repellent; I use Muskol or even Deep Woods Off would work. I used the Muskol in Belize when I went jungle trekking and I was wearing just a tank top and short shorts so my skin was fully exposed and I got NO bites. My fiance used regular off and he got tons of bites! It has a high deet content, so that’s why it works so well. Just don’t use it too much since deet is not great for you.

If I do get bitten, I put on cortisone cream or you can get the Bendadryl version of cortisone in cream form. It helps the swelling go down a lot.

Sorry forgot to post the link for Muskol: http://www.muskol.com/en/product/pump_spray_50ml/

Actually, I’m not sure if this is just a Canadian product…

Garlic pills! For real. They take a few weeks to really kick in, but I really find they help with those bloodthirsty buggers.
I get those big allergic discoloured marks too and have tried all the sprays and citronella… they still love to bite me!
Try the garlic pills though, I swear you won’t smell like garlic. Works for me!

I remember one summer going to camp where I ended up with over 100 mosquito bites! The girls in my cabin thought it was great fun to have me lay on my bunk and count the bites. -__- And I was always covered with Off!

Thankfully in more recent years the mosquitos haven’t found me quite as tasty (probably because I stay inside a lot more then I used to), but I sympathize with anyone who gets really bad bites.

I know this sounds bizarre but if you circle your bug bits with a ball point pen they will stop itching. That isnt prevention but it is a solution!

Wow! That doesn’t look fun at all. My secret for getting any bug bites to stop itching and also to reduce the redness/swelling is to put Preparation H on them! (yes, the hemorrhoid cream!) It really does work!

I lived in Italy a few years ago, and mosquitos in the summer are hor.i.ble. We did a lot of research because we hated waking up to 5892033 bites. The following bits of advice worked for me!!

- DON’T eat bananas — makes your blood sweet apparently..

– EAT garlic. they hate it

– dab VICK’S VAPOR RUB on your legs or exposed areas before you go outside. very annoying i know. mosquitos bit me while I was sleeping, however when i put dabs of this on my body before going to bed, they never came back ;)

GOOD LUCK! :)

I feel your pain. Mosquitos love me too, no matter what I do. And I have a terrible habit of scratching the bites until they turn into big ugly welts that end up scarring. Seriously, I scratch them in my sleep sometimes. I wish I had some tips for you!
