DIY Excitement

July 9th, 2010 @ 9:44 am by Mrs. Socks

I know that I’m crazy, you don’t have to tell me this, but I’m having a BLASTY BLAST with my DIY projects.

The Save The Dates were a lot of work, but I also got an amazing amount of satisfaction after we finished them! But then…I had to work on the invitations. Well…the idea for the invites didn’t come so easily.

I had a really difficult time finding inspiration that “spoke” to me. I thought they were all pretty much the same, and I wasn’t thrilled with my designs for ours. Here are some of my earlier designs:

DIY Excitement : wedding diy invitations philadelphia stationery Pearls

This was back when we thought we’d have the wedding at XIX (Nineteen). It would have definitely matched the setting since they had giant pearls hanging from the ceiling!

DIY Excitement : wedding diy invitations philadelphia stationery Crasped

I wanted to include Craspedia in the invite since we’re having craspedia flowers, but I thought these looked a little too balloon-like. Plus…I just thought there was something missing!

(Ignore the redundant last line, please!) I stuck with the same colors and fonts, but liked the tall slim look.

As well as the long, slim invite.

BOOORING. I still felt like something was missing. I was in a rut with the colors and fonts and I really couldn’t pick any images or patterns that really defined our wedding.

So I thought…there’s really no better way to put it than in words. I’m a writer first and designing is fun for me and I hope to get better at it, but it’s just not where my strengths lie at the moment.

I went on an inspiration hunt, and I remembered an invite I saw waaay back when I first started stalking wedding blogs:

I don’t know that couple, but I instantly like them just by reading their cute story. Wanting (needing) to have that same effect on my guests, I came up with something similar, but much more like a little storybook than anything else.

The reason I love this idea so much is because Mike and I live SO far from our families, that a lot of them don’t know much about us or our relationship. Laying it all out for them to see will be special, and I hope that it makes those people who may not know us well get a better idea of who we are.

I’m still hammering some of the design out, but I’ll definitely post it soon enough! I’m happy with it so far and I can’t wait to get started on it!

Did you find it difficult to find an invite that fit you?

I remember seeing that invite somewhere too and I love it. I went the quick and simple route of getting the Brides invites and then personalizing them. It worked, but I wanted to do something more telling, like this.

That invite is the inspiration for our STDs for the same reason , not everyone knows our story. Can’t wait to see your invites!

Where did you find the graphic for the first invite? I would love to use it for a party?
