Mrs. Cola's Picture
Mrs. Cola, Mountain View, CA Age and Occupation: 27, Product Communications and Promotions Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Managing Partner and Senior Designer Engagement Date: March 5, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: The Mountain Terrace, Woodside, CA About Me: I’m a Washington State native, enjoying life in Silicon Valley California with my fiancé, our three kitties and one leopard gecko. I like reading wedding blogs, Photoshopping wedding design mock ups, making lists, and planning, planning, planning! I’m a bit of an anomaly, on one side I’m a very girlie girl, I collect shoes, I lay out my outfits 4-6 weeks in advance, and I’d never leave the house without my hair curled and makeup on. But on the other side, I’m a total tomboy, I love to go camping and hiking, play drinking games (hey, I’m Irish!) and most of my closest friends are guys. My fiancé and I are planning a DIY-focused wedding with a balance between easygoing (what he wants) and chic and stylish (what I want), and are tying it all together with elements in lavender, sage, butter cream and chocolate.
About Mrs. Cola

As I mentioned in my last honeymoon recap post, and back in March, it turned out to be cheaper by about $1,000 to have a 23 hour layover on Oahu, instead of flying home directly from Kauai.

And what did that mean? Bonus honeymoon afternoon and morning in Waikiki!

We sadly left our beautiful house on Kauai at about 9:30AM, stopped in Hanalei for some souvenirs, and dropped off our snorkel gear, beach gear, and the rental Jeep. Around 1:30 in the afternoon we landed on Oahu, and we were ready to explore! After a $30 cab ride to our hotel, we discovered at check in that our room wasn’t quite ready, so our rush to see as much of Waikiki as we could in an afternoon was interrupted by one of these, while we waited for our room.

After about 45 minutes we were able to check in, and were pleasantly surprised by this pretty view from our spacious balcony, which was only $135 a night with tax (that’s a good deal during the summer in Waikiki only a block from the beach)!

Colas in Oahu: Bonus Honeymoon Day! : wedding honeymoon mountain view Img 916 Colas in Oahu: Bonus Honeymoon Day! : wedding honeymoon mountain view Img 936 We dropped off our bags, put on almost the last of our three bottles of SPF 75 sunscreen (yup, we used that much, but didn’t get a sunburn, always a goal for me on vacation with my pale skin!) and went in search of some place to eat a late lunch. We walked down to the beach and in and out of several hotels before ending up across the street at Margaritaville. We shared their lunch sized volcano nachos. But this huge pile of nachos was still nothing compared to the dinner sized nachos, which we’ve had at their Vegas location!

After walking around a lot more, and visiting the International Marketplace (a big flea market type of area right next to where we stayed) for more souvenirs, we went to the Hula Grill for dinner. Here we are at the bar waiting for a table. Notice my cute new earrings and matching necklace Mr. Cola bought me! :)

Friends of ours (aka a bridesmaid and groomsman in our wedding) had recommended we eat at the Hau Tree Lanai, but after looking at their menu, Mr. C was in the mood for something a little more casual. And he had some delish ribs for dinner, but not after sampling our second best crab cakes of the trip.

The view was stunning from the Hula Grill, although it wasn’t a direct sunset view.

As you can see above, even at night the beaches here were quite busy.)

The next morning we woke up early and took a cab about 10 minutes up to the Diamond Head State Monument.

Colas in Oahu: Bonus Honeymoon Day! : wedding honeymoon mountain view Img 930

Our goal was the top of the volcanic crater, where the small white building is in this picture.

Colas in Oahu: Bonus Honeymoon Day! : wedding honeymoon mountain view Img 93001

To get there it was a good climb up a series of trails, stairs and tunnels.

Colas in Oahu: Bonus Honeymoon Day! : wedding honeymoon mountain view Img 932

But the view and cooling wind from the top was completely worth it! And it felt great to stretch our legs before our long flight home that afternoon.

Colas in Oahu: Bonus Honeymoon Day! : wedding honeymoon mountain view Img 933 Colas in Oahu: Bonus Honeymoon Day! : wedding honeymoon mountain view Img 93301

A side note here: you might have noticed that in only a few of our pictures from our honeymoon am I wearing my hair down, most of the time my hair was in pigtails. That’s because my hair is so long and thick (read: hot and hella heavy), I can’t wear regular ponytails anymore without it hurting my neck. But I love my long hair, and have worked so hard at growing it out and keeping it healthy that I’m definitely not ready for a Post Wedding Chop anytime soon. So my solution for keeping my neck cool and not aching on our honeymoon was pigtails!

After cabbing back to our hotel, packing and cabbing to the airport, we had lunch at Gordon Biersch at the Oahu airport. I had my very last crab cake of our honeymoon here, and it was, well, an airport crab cake in a chain restaurant—it was about as good as frozen crab cakes! (That’s OK though, I like crab cakes so much I’ll willing eat a frozen one on occasion to get my fix!)

Colas in Oahu: Bonus Honeymoon Day! : wedding honeymoon mountain view Img 937 (You know, after writing all these honeymoon posts, it seems I have a weird obsession with crabs or something. Apparently I like to watch them, feed them, poke at them, and eat them. But I swear, I took lots of pictures and ate lots of different animals on this trip! They just didn’t make the cut when it came to pictures to show you!) ;)

Our flight home left on time, and surprised us by giving us a fantastic aerial view of Diamond Head.

Colas in Oahu: Bonus Honeymoon Day! : wedding honeymoon mountain view Img 938

And we were also treated to one final sunset, as we neared the mainland. Ahhhh, if only our honeymoon could have lasted longer…

Colas in Oahu: Bonus Honeymoon Day! : wedding honeymoon mountain view Img 940

So that was our honeymoon, as concise as I could make the 2,400+ photos I took! It was everything we could have hoped for, and we thoroughly enjoyed it all, that is, until the day after we got home.

We came home to an extremely unpleasant and disrespectful “present” that my mother had left for us in our home. Or rather, did to our home. I won’t go into details, because just thinking about it makes me shake with anger, but lets just say she made an ridiculously poor decision that was absolutely not hers to make (and that could have been avoided by at least eight better options I can think of, the first being to effing call us, leave a message, and let us make the decision ourselves), leaving us to deal with the fallout upon our supposedly joyous return from our honeymoon, when we only wanted to decompress before returning to work the next day. My dad even brought to my attention the fact that this idiotic decision on my mother’s part was probably just a great way to start our marriage in Mr. Cola’s eyes, now that he knows his new MIL makes very bad, rash, out of place choices. Mr. C is refusing to comment, and vowing to stay out of it, and I won’t mention it again on here, besides this mini-rant. But I felt my displeasure had to be voiced to give an accurate portrayal of our honeymoon, since this put a huge cloud over it. Now, every time we look back at our honeymoon and the start of our marriage, we’ll have to remember this unpleasantness too, and much of the respect that I’d been forming for my mother over the past few years is pretty much out the window now. It’s such a shame too, if it had been handled properly, it would have only been a minor annoyance the first day of our honeymoon, but instead it turned into this whole big issue because it was purposely hidden from us.

Anyway, the end of that, and truly, before we got home, our honeymoon was awesome, and I would highly recommend Hawaii to anyone, especially the north shore of Kauai. And now, onto more fun, wedding-related posts!

Your honeymoon recaps have made me want to go to Hawaii so badly!

And my MIL retiled our bathroom, by herself, not well, while we were on our honeymoon. I feel your pain on whatever your mother did. We spent 4 days undoing her work a few weeks ago.

Looks like a great trip!

Try not to let the return spoil the memories. Just pretend what she did never happened.

And by the way, you are killing us by not telling details… ;)

Mrs Cola,
I’ve loved loved LOVED your honeymoon posts, and I’m so sorry to hear about the unpleasantness at the end. It’s obviously really hard to comment or offer any words of wisdom without knowing what happened, but sending you hugs. Sad to hear it, especially as some of my favourite posts of yours were about things you did with your mom, (like make your incredibly fabulous shoes, etc.)

Hopefully some of those memories can take away the anger of whatever happened.

Hugs.

Your honeymoon sounds wonderful. I have yet to make it to Hawaii!

I also have a mother who makes questionable decisions and, if you can believe it, behaves more childishly than her kid does. Sorry to hear, but glad to know about your stellar support system otherwise!

Thank you so much for your comments and private messages about crazy mothers/MILs, it really does make me feel better! Since so many people have asked, here is a quick summary of what we came home to. Please feel free to tear my mother a new one with some super snarky comments, since she even told me this would be a good blog post, and I was attempting to take the high road and not go into details. But since you asked!

I got a text from my mom the morning after we got home, saying thieves broke into our house and stole our rented table linens, with a picture of a box. We thought my mom meant maybe the linens (that she was going to return for us) had gotten lost, and she’d reported them stolen, so I called my mom for an explanation. Where she proceeded to tell me that she had actually BROKEN INTO OUR HOUSE and gotten the linens, which somehow had been put into the Uhaul after our reception and were in the giant pile of stuff we had dumped out of the truck onto our living room floor. And, no, she didn’t just like slip in the back door, she literally VANDALIZED OUR HOME BY BREAKING NOT 1, BUT 2 EFFING WINDOWS IN OUR HOUSE. Yeah, which lead me to my STILL shaking with anger as I type this state. And she boarded them up with plywood, so it was definitely a premeditated act to defile our house. I actually wish our neighbors had called the cops because of someone breaking into our house, because we felt (and still feel) so violated and disrespected that she did this. Not to mention the fact that we rent our home and should report it to the company we rent from, the money to repair the damage, time spent calling around to window replacement companies, time off work for someone to come look at the damage and then more time off to have them replaced.

And the kicker is, I can easily think of many much easier ways around all this drama, all of which would have meant I would be currently speaking to my mother. Including to freaking leave a voicemail on my cell and let us figure it out ourselves like the adults we are (she supposedly called several times, but since we were flying she didn’t get an answer. But leave a flipping message! I check my phone constantly and we had time to kill on our layover!!!). If she had not overreacted and gone crazy and started breaking windows, I would have been able to call her back and tell her were our hide-a-key is (because again, we are adults who are responsible enough to have ways back into our home if we get locked out). We also have a key at Mr. Cola’s office 3 miles away! Or, god forbid, we could have called our property management company and told them to let her into our house. She knew where we were staying on our trip, she could have easily gone to the website and called the phone number, to get the direct number to our beach house (assuming we didn’t have cell service on Kauai, which we did at our house and the majority of places we went. Perhaps the responsible thing would have been to call the company we rented the table linens from (which my mom had in emails I’d sent her) and inquire about the fees to return the linens late before raping our home (yes, raping our home is pretty much how we feel, we are very protective of our home and possessions, and just feel violated over this whole situation). Or…..maybe she could have just let it go. We would have much preferred to pay the $1000 (or whatever the cost) to cover the rental for another week, rather than have drama. I HATE DRAMA! And it was all just so unnecessary, as you can see from the many better solutions I just described. And if she would have at least told us that she’d done this crazy shit when she actually did it, and not hid it from us for a week, it would have been at least a little better. Even a voicemail with “hey, I’m breaking and entering into your house, hope you’re having a great honeymoon” would have been preferred over the deception.

Alright, never mind, this was not a short summary. You all shouldn’t have gotten me started. And now I’m all in a pissed off mood again, thinking about all of this, and also the fact that a bunch of our stuff is still over at my mom’s house (like our disposable table cameras!) that I really want back, but I have zero desire to see or talk to my mother anytime soon. Lame. Thank god it’s Friday, because now I need a drink!

Oy Cola, that is the worst. I’m so sorry you had to deal with that right when you returned, especially from your own mother. It’s just the pits! I’m so so sorry to hear about this! Girl deserves a hearty drink tonight, fo sho.

In other news, could you be any more adorable in these pictures? I think the piggytails are so cute on you! I already look 12 or I would have tried it, too; it’s a great fix!
