Wedding: Paper Lanterns

July 9th, 2010 @ 9:16 am by Mrs. Sand Dollar

Woo hoo! They’re here! Early this week I ordered 60 paper lanterns from Asian Ideas. And boy do they deliver fast! And what’s even better than fast shipping? FREE shipping! Yup, on orders over $100 you get free shipping. How awesome is that? So we ordered 60 lanterns to use at the wedding.

The plan is to have six strands of lights with 10 lanterns each to give the party area a little dimension. We snagged 20 in 12″, 14″ and 18″. And I’m thrilled with the sizes! The 18″ especially is a whole lot bigger than I thought it would be. And since they’ll be hanging lower than the ceiling, I think it’ll be pretty noticeable. Check it.

They won’t be up there with the big lights, we’re going to hang the strands from the top of each side beam. So the top will be brought lower, visually… if that makes sense. And with six lines across, it’ll make a big impact. At least I hope. Here’s a picture of them on my IKEA table for some scale perspective.

Good sizes, yeah? See what I mean about that killer 18″? He’s a big fella. Then we have the little guys, but they’re not so bad. The variation will be cool. I’m still kinda worried that the space will look a little bare. We have lights and lanterns across the ceiling, lights running up each supporting pole on the sides, and dance floor poles hung with lights that will define the dance floor. Anybody have suggestions for other cheap decorations?

Honestly, I’ve saved money by using the DIY part of WeddingBee. Have you looked in there? We’re using Mrs. Green Tea’s kusamada(sic) balls (Miss Cardigan spells it correctly). They are a beast, but they’re gorgeous. We’re also using ribbons and making tree branch centerpieces with branches from our backyard. Don’t know if that goes with you theme, but maybe it’ll spark an idea.

I’ll freely admit it was a good few years ago… But when I used to go to raves, I sometimes used to see a sort of stretchy day-glo sheeting stretched asymmetrically across the ceiling of the warehouse, which would in effect lower the ceiling. It actually looked pretty cool along with all the other decorations, and made a huge gaping space feel more intimate.

Now I’m not suggesting that you need day-glo colours, but there might be something like that available in white or cream. I have no idea what they are called though, or what name to look for in Google! Perhaps you can experiment and make your own from stretchy white lycra? Or ask any hip rave DJ friends if they know what they are called, or have any to borrow? Also, maybe wedding decor companies have things like that.

Have you thought about those giant balloons…I don’t know how cheap they are but they do take up a bunch of space!

hi- thanks for the photo. I am also going to order lanterns and was having a hard time visualizing the sizes. What size is your reception space? Our tent is 40X80 and I am trying to figure out how many lanterns I will need.

I’m also using lanterns for my wedding in September and looking at lanterns from Asian ideas. did you order the cords etc from them as well? I’m having a hard time figuring out how exactly to hang/string them.

I think once all the lights are on, the space will not look bare at all. I love that you varied the sizes of the laterns. This is going to look amazing!

@kcole, I’m pretty sure our dimension is 100′ x 300′. It’s enormous. I could only afford 60 lanterns, so it’ll just have to do. I’m hoping that if I OD the space on string lights and help it out with lanterns it’ll all look pretty decent. My budget is super slim, so I can’t go with any pricier options :(

Have you actually thought of hanging lattice (the one people use that stop people from looking over your back fence or in your garden. ) I know.. sounds stupid right. But… bare with me. They are quite cheap to buy. But cut the lattice in half.. like squares. And spraypaint color of said wedding, and hang them from the beams at differant levels. Ive seen it done at a few expos, adds color and also cheap!

I had another - admittedly oddball - idea, inspired by past adventures. A friend of mine has an old parachute canopy (the round, not square kind) which he uses to set up camp in the woods. It’s great for sheltering us all when it’s raining, and the hole in the middle is perfect for letting out the smoke from a cooking fire.

Apparently, they can be surprisingly cheap from Army Surplus stores, if they are no longer considered safe enough for jumping. They may also be available online or from EBay. It might be a groovy way to lower the ceiling. They cover a huge area, and if you can get a white one it could look pretty cool combined with the lanterns surrounding it.

You could also sell it again afterwards, unless you wanted to keep it as a handy camping or garden party canopy.

Anyone interested in re-selling me 40-60 lanterns, white or light green, size 16″ or bigger for half your cost? I need them by the end of this month. If so, please reply. Thanks.

@Laurie: I loved the selection of lanterns from the Asian Ideas website! And the price was hard to beat. I still have them in my closet, now getting ready to repurpose into decorating for my nursery!

Has anyone ever used globalchinastore.com for their paper lanterns? They seem to be by far the most economical but would like to at least know if someone else has used them prior to my trying them! Thanks for any help!

The cheapest i found was http://www.asianimportstore.com. Someone said it’s a sister website of paperlanterns.com. they also price match so you might want to see if they can price match with globalchinastore.com.
