About Mrs. Socks

Minimoon

July 11th, 2010 @ 11:35 am by Mrs. Socks

For some reason, I can’t say “minimoon” out loud without defaulting into my Dr. Evil voice.

Anyway…

Mr. Socks and I have decided on taking a short 5 or 6 day minimoon after our wedding! We had tossed around some pretty grand honeymoon ideas including Aruba, Hawaii, Europe, and South Africa, but alas, our funds would not allow for a $5000-$6000 vacation.

To keep costs down as low as possible, we knew we wanted to stay in the States and would probably want to drive to our destination. So what did we automatically gravitate to?

The Finger Lakes in New York! The finger lakes boast over 35 wineries, which is perfect for this wine-loving pair!

You know what else is in that region?

Niagara Falls! It’s 2 hours away from the Finger Lakes and say whaaaaa?

Niagara has some serious wine country to tour-about 50 wineries! (I SWEAR we aren’t alcoholics, we just want to drink wine all of the time.)

I turned to Jeff Siegel of The Wine Curmudgeon (is it surprising that I follow wine blogs too?) for advice on what wineries to visit since we want to make the most out of it by hitting up the best of the best. Jeff asked his friend Richard Leahy who is more familiar with the region, and Richard recommended the following wineries for the Finger Lakes:

Fox Run, Red Tail Ridge, Anthony Road, Hermann Wiemer, Glenora, Lakewood, Atwater, Ch. Lafayette Reneau, Red Newt Cellars, Standing Stone, Shalestone, Silver Thread, Lamoreaux Landing, Ventosa.

As for Niagara, the only winery that I’m familiar enough with in that region is Inniskillin. Mr. Socks and I took an icewine class at Tria Cafe that featured all Inniskillin wines, and I fell in love! Inniskillin is in Canada, so I’ll also add another country to my list of countries visited!

Since there are roughly 49 other vineyards in the Niagara area, I’ll have to do more research on Niagara wine, but so far, we’re going with this plan and we’re seriously excited about it!

We have no idea where we’re staying or eating yet, but I’d be happy to take suggestions from anyone familiar with the area!

Are you taking a minimoon or a long luxurious honeymoon?

That sounds awesome! It’ll be soo much fun! We were dreaming of a honeymoon in Hawaii or Europe, but like you, we were restricted by finances, so we did a seven day cruise instead–neither of us had ever done a cruise and it was so much fun!! I wouldn’t consider it a minimoon, but to some’s standards, I guess it was….we’re hoping to go on a trip for our 1 year anniversary…finances should be better by then.

You should definitely stay a night or two in Skaneatles, it’s SUCH a beautiful little town right on Lake Seneca (or maybe it’s Cayuga? I forget) but it’s an amazing town with loads of wineries right around it! I HEART Central and Western NY!

LOL I love that people consider the area in which I live as a “minimoon” destination!! I have lived here all my life and I can tell you- you two are in for a treat! Some great, smaller, wineries (award winning too I may add) in the area that you should definitely check out are: King Ferry (Treleven Wines), Thirsty Owl, Dr. Frank, and Wagner. Three Brothers is cool too. Skaneateles, Ithaca, Watkins Glenn are all great towns to check out. I have some great suggestions for you if you’re interested!!

Make a stop at Bully Hill Vineyards in you stay in the Finger Lakes area. They have wonderful wines and a bit off the normal track. They aren’t on the normal wine tour list. Bath is the town close to it. Our favorites are ‘Goat White’ and ‘Love my Goat’

Go to Ithaca!!! And join the Fingerlakes Wine Country fan page on Facebook. And go to Americana Vineyard - they make wine slushies there. Seriously. They just pour wine in a slushie machine. It will change your life. :) My non-wine loves of Ithaca include the Ithaca Farmers Market and the Hangar Theatre.

FH and I are nuts about wine too! We visited the Finger Lakes in October and shared a house on Seneca Lake with another couple. Came home with 3 cases and can’t wait to go back!

From the list of wineries they recommended, we loved: Anthony Road, Wiemer, Atwater, Standing Stone (great reds) and Lamoreaux. We missed Shalestone since they weren’t open on Saturdays. Fox Run, Glenora and Ch. L. R. will not get a return visit.

The house we rented was affordable, comfortable, and between Lamoreaux & Wagner on the east side of Seneca. I reviewed the wineries and wines on my blog if you need more info.

I’ve lived here all my life and go on wine tours at least once a year.

Not to miss - Dr. Frank (I’ve actually never been there but the wines are AWESOME!), Glenora, Fox Run, Hazlett, and the place that does the fruit wines which I can’t remember now. Three brothers is kind of fun as well. I would recommend Seneca Lake for the most concentrated grouping of wineries.

If you’re going to do some other day trips, hit up Canandaigua Lake (no wineries but some fabulous real estate), the Strong Museum of Play in Rochester, the George Eastman House in Rochester, Ithaca for the organic small/college town experience, and the Waterloo outlets if you want to shop :)

I’m a Finger Lakes native (and miss it terribly.) Here are a few suggestions for you:

-Ithaca is fun (and gorges, as the t-shirts say.) If you like waterfalls (who doesn’t?), go to Buttermilk Falls State Park just outside of town. It’s lovely–you can hike up the gorge, go swimming beneath the falls, and take lots of lovey-dovey anewlywed photos! :) Downtown Ithaca is also very nice- there is a nice walking mall, and there are plenty of awesome food opportunities. I highly recommend Sammy’s Pizzeria and Moosewood (yes, the famed Moosewood is actually a restaurant in Ithaca: http://www.moosewoodrestaurant.com). Near Ithaca there is also Taughannock Falls, yet another gorgeous waterfall, this one on the west side of Cayuga Lake.

-Like Mrs. Trail Mix said, Skaneateles IS a beautiful town. It’s small, though, so you may not want to stay there for more than a day. It’s also in the OTHER direction of Niagara Falls–bummer. If you’re into fancy, the spa Mirbeau is right on the edge of town. I hear it’s nice, but it’s not my thing. Good eats in town include: Doug’s Fish Fry- legendary, down home fried fish (and other stuff, too, but nothin’ fancy) and Rosalie’s Cucina-highly recommended! Amazing Italian food. There are also a lot of B&Bs in/around Skaneateles, so if you go there, you may want to stay in one rather than a motel/hotel (of which there are only a few in the area.) There also are not a ton of wineries right around Skaneateles–there tend to be more on the lakes further west (Seneca, Cayuga, Keuka, Canandaigua, etc.) because of a slightly different microclimate.

-Hammondsport is also an ADORABLE little town on the south end of Keuka Lake. Several wineries right around it, too: Bully Hill, Pleasant Valley, others that I can’t think of at the moment… And there is (or was, last time I was there) an awesome bakery right on the town square.

-Naples is another nice little town famous for its grape pies (which are highly recommended, by the way.) There is also a grape festival every year–I think in September or early October.

-And finally, this is not a place, but the Finger Lakes are chock full of roadside ice cream stands. Seriously, there are more ice cream places there than I’ve seen anywhere else. It’s kind of ridiculous and pretty amazing at the same time. Hope you take advantage of it!

@photographernico: Why wouldn’t you go back to Fox Run or Glenora? We’ve been to each of those at leastt 4 times and they are always great stops! Plus last time we were at Glenora, they were doing a free local cheese tasting as well!

Oh, how could I forget Ravines on Keuka Lake! With all these wineries, you might have to add on a few days. :)

@saranightly: Glenora’s wines didn’t measure up to everything else we tasted. The tasting room experience was a little off-putting. Fox Run was a little better than Glenora. There were so many places we didn’t get to visit that I’d only go back to the ones we really loved.

Don’t forget about the Niagara wine trail when you visit the falls!! You are not going to find quite as many wineries as the finger lakes but there are some good stops as well- Marjim Manor, Honeymoon trail ( fitting for the occasion), and Viczarra are some of my favorites. And there is always the Chataqua wine trail too. The possibilities are endless!

And don’t forget to get some buffalo wings when you go to the falls!

You will have a blast here. I live in the region and got married here. If you haven’t decided on places to stay, there are tons of B&B’s in the area as well. We stayed at Barrister’s in Seneca falls and had a wonderful experience. My favorite ice cream locally is Cayuga Lake creamery. All their ice cream is made on site. Enjoy your minimoon and welcome to the finger lakes!

I’m from Hamilton which is 30 mins from the Canadian Niagara Wine region, and we’re getting married at Cave Spring Vineyards next month! If you’re coming to the area, definately check out the towns or Niagara-on-the-Lake and Jordan Village, and wineries I’d suggest… Vineland Estates, Pelee Island, Hernder Estates, Eastdell (they have a GORGEOUS view and a lovely restuarant - including a fab brunch I believe), Kacaba vineyards, Josephs estate wine, Colio Estates, Jackson-Triggs, Chateau des Charmes…. there are also a million little vineyards if you just drive around, and amazing roadside fruit stands, luxury cheese shops, etc.!

Oh, I almost forgot! If you’re looking for an afternoon or evening activity in the area to take a break from the wine, the Shaw festival has some of the best theatre in the country!
