The Weight of Marriage

July 11th, 2010 @ 5:25 pm by Mrs. Pin Cushion

I may be very, very close to gaining a lot, a lot of weight. With my wedding day quickly approaching, I may soon gain the “marriage fifteen”.

The Weight of Marriage : wedding fitness oakland 51z46km

The dreaded scale. [Source]

A recent NY Times article, “For Better, For Worse, For B.M.I.” discusses how often people gain the marriage fifteen after they say “I Do.” (Also coined “love chub” and “happy pounds” in the article!) Married men and women have higher B.M.I.s than their single or dating counterparts, and they are much more likely to be obese.

The article theorizes that if you are married, “you’re somewhat settled. You don’t have to prove yourself; your spouse will ostensibly love you, all of you, muffin top notwithstanding.” (I hope that Mr. Pin Cushion loves my muffin top, thunder thighs and jiggling-wave arms [and whatever else I may develop over the years] whether we are married or not.)

The article’s author, Abby Ellin, also says, “for better and worse, married couples tend to share behaviors and activities, like snuggling on the couch with a vat of popcorn rather than hopping on the treadmill.” (Thanks, Abby, now I want some buttery popcorn.)

This trend of non-exercise and eating not-as-healthy-as-we-once-did has already taken hold in the Pin Cushion household, pre-marriage. Between my 12 hour work days, catching up on So You Think You Can Dance and my very thorough internet perusing, that leaves me with 2 1/2, maybe 3 minutes, to get in my exercise. And that is just not enough time.

I am hopeful that a few factors will help prevent my own love chub: 1) I’ve held steady at my current weight for about eight years. 2) I didn’t try to lose any weight before the wedding (if I had been trying, then my current diet of hamburgers, taqueria food, three servings of dessert a day, and multiple bowls of Lucky Charms sure hasn’t been successful). And 3) I’ve felt that Mr. PC loves me pretty-darn-unconditionally for quite some time now (knowing he’d love me at 876.3 lbs sure takes away the pressure to exercise [though he just informed me that at 876.4 lbs, his love might be a bit more conditional]).

Have you seen the marriage fifteen in action? Are you doing anything to stave off the happy pounds? (You can start a strict regimen like myself, which involves long walks between the couch and the kitchen and extensive reps of blog hopping [I hear that burns a lot of calories]).

I can’t speak to the “marriage fifteen”, but maintaining my weight loss after moving in with my fiance almost 8 years ago was tough.
I think you do pick up on each others bad habits. And it’s tough to say no to takeout when there seems to be nothing as interesting at home!

But while I’ve gained & lost weight, I’ve never gotten back to my low point. I also don’t expect to get back to what I weighed in my early-20’s, I don’t have time nowadays to spend 2+ hours at the gym.

I’m not married yet but since being with the boy I have maintained/lost weight and he has lost about 60 pounds (former athlete who stopped playing but kept eating, haha)!

I’m hoping not to gain the marriage 15. We recently picked up running as a hobby and have races scheduled at least once a month. We are also poor students who can’t afford to eat out a lot so we cook yummy, healthy meals from home :)

Dear God, I hope not! We’re just married x 1 month…I lost about 15 lbs before the wedding, not intending to (from 120 to 105 lbs) and I wouldn’t mind it if I regained it since I’ve weighed around 120 for my entire adult life….but I certainly wouldn’t be happy with muffin tops or back fat :o( I’ve gotten lazy about exercising over the last couple of years, so I may need to pick that up again.

Oops. I think I already did. We were married in May, and I have made extravagant dinners ever since. It has nothing to do with the fact that I don’t need to impress him yada yada… It’s just, I love to cook!! He’s my new guinea pig! :)

Quitting smoking the day after we got back from St. Thomas certainly didn’t help us! We’ve both gained a few pounds in the last 3 months, but not enough to worry about just yet.

I’m not really trying to lose weight for the wedding, so I’m hoping I’ll avoid this! I think a lot of the time this comes from spending so much time before the wedding eating right and trying to lose weight, and then going back to normal habits right after the wedding!

Other brides were dropping #s. Me? I gained 20 #s & could barely zip my dress. I really regret not keeping my weight at bay -my pictures would have looked better. Ah well.

We both lost a bunch of weight for the wedding, so we’re somewhat heavier than a year ago.

That said, I fully agree with the ‘mimicking behavior’ part. Now that I practice yoga every day, my husband has started going back to the gym daily too! (But we still both share a pan of brownies. Ooooops)

I have seen the marriage fifteen and beyond with various friends over the years. I hope to keep off the weight by continuing to be active and maintain our same diet. If I see the pounds creeping on then I will pick up an extra fitness class or something.

We are the opposite of the “marriage 15″ couples - we think trying to stay healthy is the best thing we can do for each other. We’ve signed up for life, might as well make that last as long as possible! We can spend a Sunday afternoon on the couch with cake very happily, but it’s likely we took the dogs for an hour long walk in the morning and will both be off to the gym the next day. We encourage each other in our fitness routines so I think we have better habits together, rather than apart when it would be easy to slack off if someone wasn’t paying attention. For us it’s about balance and feeling good :)

I’m finding it difficult to change my cookie-every-day diet in the weeks leading up to the wedding. Part of me wants to take control, but the other part thinks: ‘really, what’ll it change?’ I may not love my arms in my photos, but I’m sure my smile will be huge.

Haha you’re too cute, Pin Cushion. Mr. Socks and I play tennis together most evenings in the spring, summer and warmer fall months so it keeps me active!

I’ve already got post-engagement-picture weight gain happening (there’s still a year left until the wedding so I figure I can take a little break from the dieting!), so I have no doubt that I’ll gain weight after the wedding, too. It’s just so tempting to let yourself relax - just for a little bit - after working so hard!

Oh good, I’m glad I’m not the only one eating 3+ bowls of Lucky Charms a day.

we’ve def had issues with this over the 5 years we’ve been together and we both know that we have packed on some extra pounds, but have been better about getting back on track over the past year..the biggest problem is def finding the time to workout!

I’ve seen it, but usually in cases where the couple didn’t live together previously - where there’s no big change in lifestyle there’s ususally no problem

This is something I’m struggling with since my FH and I moved in together. The weight has just crept on and we keep making attempts at fighting it but they usually only last a few weeks. I keep hoping that this week will be the one that sticks. I know he loves me unconditionally but I want to feel healthy and strong for many years to come.
