Cricut Cake Put to the Test

Mama Sand Dollar excitedly ordered the Cricut Cake as soon as it was available, and today we got the chance to finally test it out! After watching the HSN demonstration on their show, as well as the DVD that came with the product, we felt we were ready to conquer. Everything seemed like a snap, the demo ladies were whipping out designs left and right.

We gathered all our supplies together and started it up. And boy how we failed! They forgot to mention all the freezing that’s involved. You roll out the dough on your mat, freeze it, cut it, freeze it again, then remove to put on your cake. Yeah, nothing like that was mentioned anywhere. So we spent about two hours fighting with the machine trying to figure out why everything it was cutting was just being pulled around by the blade. Once we figured out this whole freezing process, things weren’t so bad.

The letters actually look pretty cool. And we played with more shapes after these butterflies. They’re not so hot. I also figured out that there’s no way I’d be able to bake and fondant our own cake. We’re going to test it out on a smoothed-out buttercream cake from a grocer to check if the fondant looks odd on buttercream or not. I’m not too sure on mixing medias. But for now, we’re calling it a mild success. Oh, and cutting cookie dough with it? Major fail. We’ll experiment again some other time. For now I’ve had all the frosting I can handle.

Have you tried out or seen the Cricut Cake in action? What did you think of it?

I think the cricut cake seems overpriced, but I would like to try it sometime. It looks easier to me though to just roll out your own fondant and cut shapes out with cookie cutters. Have you taken the Wilton cake decorating classes at all? It’s not too hard to put fondant on a cake, they teach you how to do this in the classes.

My sister has one and she’s SO good at it! She’s made some gorgeous stuff - so hang in there - you’ll get it!

We had a buttercream cake with fondant decorations - I think it turned out awesome! we had some greenery/tree leaves & flowers going up and across the cake over white buttercream.

My wedding cake was iced in buttercream and had fondant ribbons going around it. Looked great!

My cake (made a professional) had fondant on top of buttercream frosting. It’s the only way this lady that we used make them. So I totally think you could buy a buttercream-frosted cake somewhere and then apply the fondant on top. Good luck!!

Wow, I think with another trial it would be fantastic! I’ve seen them and wanted one, but they are just too darn expensive for me to justify buying one. I’ll live vicariously through you instead!

That looks like so much fun to use once you work out all the unexpected kinks. I hope you guys can use it for your cake. =)

it looks amazing but it seems like only the pros know how to really use it. besides, i’m not a big fan of fondant.

good luck!

I’m kind of jealous of you Cricut Cake. I want one! I think the shapes and letters you made look pretty good. I know that even with the paper cutting Cricut, it can take a while to get the hang of it, so I’m sure you’ll get better at it! I think fondant can look really nice on buttercream if the icing is smooth and the fondant is thin.

I so want one, but the price is pretty steep so I’m waiting to hear more about it before I dive in and buy one. Thanks for posting your thoughts on it!

Wow! I’m glad you tried it out. I’ve thought about trying to decorate my own cake, but since I have very little (no) experience with icing/fondant I think I’ll just pay the experts :). I hope you persevere with yours, though!
