Even though it may seem a little out of order, I am going to start catching you up with our honeymoon recaps! It’s hard to believe but we’ve been married just over a month now… a month!!
We had an unbelievably fabulous time as we explored Croatia top to bottom in a little under two weeks. I have split the posts up by our itinerary in three abridged sections - it was very difficult to narrow down our hundreds of pictures and all the sights we saw! If you are interested in any additional information about our trip as I go along, or a more detailed itinerary, please feel free to PM me - I would be more than happy to share recommendations and our hotels.
Without further ado… we took off on the Monday afternoon right after our wedding. We flew overnight from New York to Copenhagen, and after a short layover, flew to the capital of Croatia, Zagreb, for our first night. We rented a car for the first week of our trip, so we drove out to our hotel in Zagreb.
We were hungry so we stopped for farm fresh strawberries in front of the main square in Zagreb.

We walked to “Upper town” and through Kaptol Square. We visited the Lotrscak Tower and climbed to the top. We had a great panoramic view of the whole city. There is a canon in the tower that is still shot off every day at noon so all the churches can synchronize their clocks!

We woke up early and headed west to Riejka. We stopped on our way to a small town called Karlovac, but there was not too much to see (though it was pretty!). We unpacked at the hotel and then headed to Trsat Castle, a 13th Century fortress.

We walked around the Korzo, the main pedestrian walkway, had a delicious pizza dinner, and headed back to our hotel to enjoy wine on our balcony.
Obligatory ring shot (Mr. HC made fun of me for while after this one)

We woke up the next morning, enjoying the sun streaming in, and then I started to get dressed. And I discovered the ants. Not one or two them. Masses and masses of them! The hotel was very nice and switched us to a new room on the same floor, with an even bigger, corner balcony!
We had a delicious breakfast brought up to us which we enjoyed on our balcony (no food in the room, no sir, not after the ants!). This felt very “honeymoon” of us to have room service on the balcony!
We headed out for the day west into Istria, out on the coast. Our first stop was Pula in the southern part of Istria. We began by exploring the 1st century Roman amphitheater. It is the 6th largest Roman amphitheater left in the world, and one of the most well preserved. It was unbelievably impressive.
We might have had an audio guide take us through!
And this lovely picture was moments before…
Yes, this picture is of the ground. Why? Well, I wasn’t getting to the bottom of the stairs, so I took the express. On my tush. And broke my camera. The rest of the pictures from this particular day are from a disposable I bought so that we wouldn’t miss everything. Unfortunately, 27 pictures doesn’t go that far and we still missed taking pictures of one whole city!
A Roman mosaic still in tact.
Pula’s town center, where Town meetings have been taking place for 2000 years.
After Pula, we headed north on the coast to the small town of Porec. We climbed to the top of the belfry at the Euphrasian Basilica and had breathtaking views of Porec and the glistening water.
Admiring the Porec views.
After a late lunch, we headed out to our last stop for the day, the “Jewel of Istria”, the town of Rovijn. We stopped on our way there at Mini Croatia.
Yes, this is me being a giant because everything was “mini”. And for some reason, I’m not a very nice giant. Unfortunately, this giantess picture was the last on our camera, so we didn’t get any of Rovijn. But it was a beautiful seaside town and well worth the visit!
The next day, we decided to really indulge. 15 km from Riejka is a seaside resort town called Opatija. Many Europeans visit there to spend time near the water and at the spa. So that is what we did. (Oh, side note: luckily for us, Riejka is a major Croatian city and we were able to replace my camera with a nearly identical one early in the morning. Whew!)
We started off with “iced coffees” by the water (I learned early on the “iced coffees” are not cold coffees with ice, but rather coffee ice cream floats. Though delicious, I had to stop ordering them daily!)
Don’t we look relaxed? We’ve just come from our massages!
Yes, we had massages - Mr. HC’s first! It was really a relaxing, wonderful, honeymooney thing to do! We explored Opatija and then headed out to Croatia’s largest island, Krk.
We parked our car and we were walking along the water when we heard “Help help!” coming from this boat. The people on it were shouting and waving at us. When we walked over, the captain was waiting, holding the rope to anchor, but no one from the island had come to bring them in so that they could get off the boat! Mr. HC helped them dock and they kept thanking us. It was hilarious!
Krk was very beautiful, and we had a nice evening of enjoying the water and a seaside dinner.
Stay tuned - we head down and out!
