Mrs. Knitting, Toronto Age and Occupation: 24, Student Recruitment Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Neuroscience PhD Candidate Engagement Date: October 2009 Wedding Date: December 2010 Venue: University of Toronto Faculty Club About Me: I'm a pearl wearing, etiquette book reading Toronto girl who loves cooking and baking, museums, charm bracelets, and collecting books on Jackie Kennedy (a lot). I've been known to spend Sunday mornings at the antique market, Wednesday evenings at sister sushi dinners, and any bit of spare time reading. After six and a half years of many late night walks, watching DVDs together in bed, travelling to places like New York, and Tobermory, doing Sudokus together on the couch, lots of Indian food, the occasional yoga class, moving in together and so much more, Mr. Knitting and I are planning a cozy Christmasy (it's a word!), vintage wedding in Toronto complete with many DIY projects (eek!) and lots of help from our amazing group of family and friends.

Dressing My Lovely Ladies

July 12th, 2010 @ 12:21 pm by Mrs. Knitting

My plan for dressing my bridesmaids is pretty relaxed. I saw this picture shortly before we got engaged and I knew I wanted something just like it.

I LOVE this look. Not those specific colours (although they are lovely), but the idea of having different dresses in similar(ish) shades.

Like many of you I feel it’s important for my ‘maids (I suspect I should be using a less servile term than ‘maids, but I love it so I’m sticking with it!) to look and feel their best in dresses they love and at prices they’re each comfortable with. Basically, my guidelines are that I’d like the colour of the dress to be either pale pale pink, burgundy, or light gray. As for what the dresses look like, I’m pretty open to what we find.

My plan is to go shopping with all my maids and our groomswoman to find them lovely dresses at vintage or locally owned stores like Girl Friday in Toronto. I bought my grad dress at Girl Friday and it’s been my favourite dress store ever since.

However, thus far my plans have been foiled! Here’s how shopping with my MOH/sister went when I visited her in Vancouver.

Here we are all excited for our adventure. Locally owned small dress shops here we come!

Oops, no, all the stores don’t open for another hour. Coffee time!

Next we traipsed around to basically every independently owned store in Vancouver and found NOTHING. Not even a possibility for her to try on. Here’s how we felt about that.

Now we’re planning to go shopping again in September when we’re both in Edmonton for our cousin’s wedding. Here’s hoping our other dress shopping experiences are more successful!

Where did you find your bridesmaid dresses?

I did that with my bridesmaids. It was a little challenging because 2 out of 5 are out of state so I didn’t get to see their dresses until the weekend of the wedding. It turned out wonderfully. Each of my ladies is built completely differently so I could not bear the idea of putting them in the same dress. This way they were all comfortable and it looked great, too. I went with different shades of turquoise, but darker and brighter varieties than the photo you have posted.
A couple of the girls went to bridal boutiques, but the others found dresses at various department stores and mall stores. It is doable, it just takes time.
Good luck!!

Aww, what a good idea to have the locally owned stores be the providers of their dresses! I also like the idea of having a couple of different colors for the dresses. I might have decided that if I had seen this post before I made any decisions!

I had my girls just pick out little black dresses because I decided my colors would be black white and green, so they had the option to shop in their own closets. Since all three of my bridesmaids have to travel pretty far to get to my wedding I figured I’d make their dress shopping as easy as possible. I’m providing them with matching pashminas (it’s a fall wedding) so that they’ll look somewhat similar. Good luck finding the dresses!

I love the mix and match look, but my mother hates it. I’m trying to decide if it’s worth putting up a stink or if I should just let it go so I don’t have to hear her complaining about it.

You need to go to Barefoot Contessa in Vancouver, you will love it…its simply to die for and i am sure you could find a dress there!!

On a side note i got mine in Vancouver at Bryans (not Bryans bride) they were 99.00 off the rack and a stunning green. I did get all matching green but the styles are different. They do have shades of colour though so you could possibly find the dresses you need there as well!!

Good luck!

Aww, I wanted that same look! My mother and MIL hated the idea though and slowly convinced their daughters (my sisters and SIL) to talk amongst themselves and find one dress they all liked. THEN my two sisters were pregnant - 8 months and 4 months along - so even though the dresses were the same, at least they looked sorta different as maternity versions! Hey, at least I didn’t have to deal with it! They all looked great!

(I will say, I did have a hard time when I was first looking online, b/c our wedding color was grey, but there were no grey dresses back then. Now, they’re everywhere!)
