Mrs. Cardigan's Picture
Mrs. Cardigan, Austin Age and Occupation: 21, Student/Soon-to-be Special Education Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 20, Student/Soon-to-be Accounting Systems Analyst Engagement Date: August 16, 2009 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Vintage Villas About Me: I'm a native Austinite who was raised as a die-hard Aggie. Luckily, I'm a pretty persuasive girl because I managed to convince my high school boyfriend (now fiance!), Mr. Cardigan, to ditch his hardcore Longhorn ways and join me up at A&M, where we currently reside with our adorable dogs, Cullen & Ranger. We're currently planning a bright, cheery wedding with a ridiculous amount of DIY projects that I can't wait to tackle! I love crafting in any form, reading, and margaritas (I think I love them the most!). Organization is what keeps me sane and I love helping others, which is probably why I ended up as an education major. It gets a little chaotic sometimes when you're planning a wedding among all of the papers, projects, finals, and certification exams, but we're having the time of our lives and we can't wait to get started on our journey as husband and wife - and we're so excited to share our wedding with the hive!
About Mrs. Cardigan

“I Feel Like James Bond!”

July 12th, 2010 @ 4:15 pm by Mrs. Cardigan

That’s exactly what Mr. Cardigan said when they handed us the registry gun at Target. Right after saying it, he proceeded to crouch down and start humming the Mission Impossible theme song. And I’m pretty sure he pretended to shoot a few people. Yeah, he was pretty excited about this whole registry thing.

(Yes, we hid in the shoe aisle to take this picture. I always get yelled at when I try to take photos in stores!)

So, we’ve officially registered, and while I’m definitely not an expert at this whole registry business, I have a few tips that might help those of you who haven’t registered yet.

1. Don’t be afraid to register for a lot of stuff. This one sounds pretty self-explanatory, but I felt SO greedy registering for so much! Mr. C kept having to remind me that the whole point of this was asking for stuff and that I should just have fun with it. When I got home, I tried to do a little research on how big registries should be, to make myself feel better, and everything I saw said that it really can’t be too big! I know that I’ve been to plenty of weddings where when I tried to go buy a gift I found that there were only a few things on the registry, and it was a pain to figure out what to get. Guests like options and they won’t think you’re greedy if your registry is big - they will appreciate it!

2. Let your fiance hold the registry gun. Seriously. I think Mr. C would have gotten bored with this after about 5 minutes, but I gave him complete control of the gun and he felt like James Bond the whole time we were there. He loved that stupid thing, and I’m convinced that’s part of the reason he had so much fun. I asked him if I could press the button, just once, and he pouted about it until I gave up and gave the gun back to him. Maybe Mr. Cardigan is just weird, but I have a feeling it’s a guy thing!

3. Wear your comfy clothes! This one sounds silly, but trust me. We were in that store for over two hours, and I was SO glad that I had chosen to wear jeans and a t-shirt rather than the cute outfit I had planned. You’ll be doing a lot of walking around and you’ll be glad to be comfortable!

4. Have a plan, but don’t get too detailed. Mr. Cardigan and I had discussed what we were thinking about for decor before we went to register and we agreed that it helped a LOT. We are in the fortunate position of knowing exactly where we’ll be living once we’re married and what our home will look like, but even if you don’t I would recommend at least discussing color and style options. We had decided on colors and styles for our living room and bedroom, and it gave us a lot of guidance when we were looking at stuff and we were able to find some really awesome decor pieces that we are very excited about! But, even though we had an idea of what we were looking for, we still left some stuff open to what we found. For example, we hadn’t discussed bathroom colors at all, but we had a complete blast going through the bathroom aisles and finding coordinating pieces that we love. So, have a general color idea, but don’t get your heart set on anything too specific - just have fun with it!

5. Take a break! This is my absolute favorite tip. We were registering at Target, and our Target has a little Starbucks in it with a small Pizza Hut next to it. After we had been there for about an hour, we went over there and got a personal pan pizza and some breadsticks to split. We were able to sit down and rest, and it was a really great way for us to get refreshed and ready for the next round of registering. We both felt like it was a huge help in staying happy and calm.

Do you have any great registry tips? Please share!

I have a couple of registry tips! First is to check in on your registry online every couple of weeks. So many things will be discontinued before your wedding date and showers are here so you’ve got to stay on top of updating and finding new things that you’d like.

Also think outside the box on some registry items. My FI and I are very fortunate to have our townhome already, we moved in months ago, so we actually don’t need all that much (nor do we have the space to store too many new things!) We’ve decided that registering at REI was one of the best decisions ever. Talk about excited FI! whew! We even registered for hiking booties for our dog and a book about best trails to go hiking with dogs.

Finally, take some time to browse other people’s registries, you’ll find things you totally forgot about and see some unique items that you may never have thought of.

You and Mr. Cardigan are so cute!! Have fun with it!!

Good tips! I have a feeling our registry is too small…I might have to add some more things!

What great tips! We went to check it out and were overwhelmed… I think the ‘take a break’ part might be the most important!

We are registering in a month and I’m excited! Thanks for the tips.
Although when I say “we” I mean me and my mother. Fiance doesn’t care to go…. even if I gave him that damn gun, the whole time he’d say “are we done yet”.

Great tips Miss C!
Why do they yell at you for taking pictures? I’m surprised I haven’t been kicked out of places if picture taking was a crime! Haha

my fiance wasn’t interested in the registry gun. I asked him if he had a fever, haha. He doesn’t like the whole idea of registering though. He thinks we are being greedy by telling people what we want.

We registered last Monday for the first time. Went armed with a list (specific products in some cases) which really helped. It was more work than I thought it would be.

I completely agree about taking a break - especially if it is food and blood sugars are plummeting. After 2 hours at Macy’s, we grabbed appetizers… and a mojito. You can bet we had fun at the next store!

Thanks for the advice! I totally agree about the registry gun being a guy thing-I’m 100% certain that’s the only reason my fiance will come with!

I made the mistake of leaving him alone for a few minutes and when i got home and look at the registry to my surprise WE registered for…….A remote control car…a Pool..and yes BEER. But i guess as long as he had fun it was all worth it. and it really did make me laugh:-)

LOL! Yeah I ran to the bathroom and left FI with the registry gun and later when we looked at our registry, I saw all the items he added while I was away. HAHAHA FI loved the registry gun.

Definitely take a break! Registering sounds easy, but it is exhausting!
