I Have a Hang-Up

July 12th, 2010 @ 5:46 pm by Mrs. Octopus

For the most part, I am not self-conscious about the way I look, despite how badly Facebook and its advertisers apparently wish that I were. No lie, I just opened the site, and today’s warning is that my teeth need to be whiter than my wedding dress. Thanks guys.

However, I do have a slight hang-up about one physical aspect of myself that, curiously, Facebook has yet to threaten me about. I think I have really crappy posture, and I often have to remind myself to drag my slumping shoulders upright. I tend to think I look like these photos that earned Miley a bunch of criticism for her posture, although I also think I’m self-conscious enough that I’m probably overexaggerating it to myself:

Like, am I wrong, or are these really slouchy? Miley-esque? I think they are? Or maybe I’ve gotten neurotic beyond all sense about this? I mean, it’s entirely possible.

Seriously, he is a COMPULSIVE photo-ruiner.

I know where my tendency for poor posture comes from. Mom Octopus fights a constant battle against having huge, painful muscle knots build up in her shoulders, and passed that struggle along to my sister and I. I have been known to make a masseuse or two exclaim, “wow, you really weren’t kidding about those knots!” When I went to get a massage from my mom’s regular person, she pronounced me “just as crunchy” as my mom. The knots make it tiring and painful to keep my shoulders upright, so I react to it by slouching, which then allows my muscles to weaken, which makes me even more prone to knots… so you see the cycle. Incidentally, my mom, my sister, and I are all pretty well-endowed, BOSOMS-wise, and I suspect that doesn’t help. They’re HEAVY, yo!

I don’t want to look all hunch-y in my wedding photos. I don’t want to look slumpy on my wedding day, period. Or at all, any day, really. I want to stop checking my reflection when I walk by storefronts to see if I’m slouching as much as I think I am. I want to look tall and proud and strong! More importantly, I want to feel better; I really want my shoulders to stop aching. So, I’m definitely trying to find the best solutions to my shoulder/back issues. Over a number of years, I have discovered two things that help a great deal with the muscle knots, and therefore, the posture:

  1. Exercise. Ugh. Wish it weren’t true, but it is. Any kind of exercise helps, but muscle toning or lifting workouts that focus on stretching and building strength in my shoulders and back especially.
  2. Having a chiropractor do muscle work (sort of similar to sports massage). I saw a chiropractor in Las Vegas for two years who I will swear up and down was a miracle worker. The knots virtually disappeared in her care. However, the progress made in muscle treatments doesn’t last forever if you stop, and a year in Boston without treatment (a year which included hunching over to take notes and write lengthy papers, and hauling around a super-heavy school bag) has brought me pretty far back in terms of my muscles’ health.

I’m actively working on the exercise, and as soon as I get a job (which I’m hoping and praying will be this week, keep your fingers crossed for me) I’m taking my health benefits and RUNNING to the highly-rated chiropractor up the street. However, I’m open to any and all tips on eliminating the muscle knots, or straightening my posture up, or both.

Does anyone else struggle with shoulder and back strength, or muscle knots, or slouching? What do you do for it? Also, does your Facebook call you fat all the time? Seriously, what is that ABOUT? I actually AM going to fit into my wedding dress, and I’m going to look awesome in it. Shut up, Facebook.

I’m a total sloucher (Major rounded shoulders, yo) and I was worried about how I would look on my wedding day, too!
But I found that on the day, I was so happy and joyful that for whatever reason, my posture was just naturally upright!

I have back issues so I understand the problem - dance especially ballet or Irish and horseback riding are wonderful because they expect you to be straight with shoulders back. Pilates will probably also help as well as swimming. To give you more incentive, my mother always reminds me - you can lose weight automatically by standing straight. It’s just how the line of your body looks so with no work lose 5 lbs!

Oh goodness Miss O! The minute my Fiancé sent the request to be linked as “engaged” on Facebook all the ads on the side changed to this wedding diet and that wedding diet! It is SUPER annoying! As for the back pain I get lower back pain and even though I hate doing them, sit ups and crunches have helped the most for me. Oh and stretching regularly! BTW you totally don’t seem slouchy to me!

I’ve had major back/neck/shoulder problems for the last 10 years. I’ve found that as much as I hate it - back and shoulder strengthening exercises, combined with physical therapy, really helps. In fact, the reduced shoulder pain is what keeps me exercising (most of the time). And your shoulders get toned in the process - score!

Ohhh girl, I have crunchy shoulders TOO! Seriously, they are SO loud! If you run your thumb across the top of my shoulder blades, you can hear all the crunchy popping noises of the millions of knots in there! It sucksssss.

Sadly, the only treatment that I’m currently doing is having Mr. B rub my shoulders…all…the…time. It feels so nice to have those knots pop. But, if I could afford to, I’d love to go to a chiropractor like you did!

I am the slouchiest girl ever from a combination of being taller than every one of my friends growing up and also having those super heavy boobs you wrote about. I was bound and determined to straighten up for the wedding and I think I did for the most part with a lot of practice, but post-wedding I have returned to my slouchy ways!

I know exactly what you mean. I have a nasty habit of slouching (my high school prom picture would rival that one of Miley), I have a huge chest, and I have chronic shoulder problems. I’ve also gone to a chiropractor in the past and it’s worked wonders. (Too expensive to keep up, though, and I’ve also moved.)

It’s one of my big concerns for the wedding. To some extent, now that I’m aware of it and I know when photos are taken, I do correct for the slouch… there aren’t too many photos taken these days that catch me in a slouch. But I am actively correcting for it in such situations, and it takes its toll. The small of my back starts hurting if I’m focusing on standing straight for too long. I know I’ll already be wanting out of the dress and to get off my feet by the end of the day. I don’t really want to add lower back pain from standing correctly to the list.

I don’t really have any suggestions. I don’t enjoy going to the gym at all. I love the idea of Irish dance. :) Good luck!

hi ms. octopus!!! i’m in physical therapy school, so i thought i would give you some quick and easy strengthening exercises for your upper back! i don’t want to start anything, but just like you mentioned above, going to a chiropractor only helps if you keep going. just the same, these exercises are only going to help if you keep doing them, but at least they’re free!!

I wish I could provide you with pics, but there isn’t a place for them.

1. Shoulder blade pinches: Sit up nice and tall and pretend there is a pencil in between your shoulder blades. Squeeze your shoulders together like you are pinching the pencil. Hold for 3 seconds. Do 20 reps 2-3 times a day.
2. Pec stretch: stand in a doorway with your shoulders and elbows at 90 degree angles on the door jam and lean into the open doorway. Hold for 15-20 seconds. Repeat 3 times.

These 2 are the very beginning of a whole upper back strengthening program. The first one is to strengthen the super weak back muscles and the second one will loosen up the tight muscles in your chest. If you ever have any pain or discomfort, stop immediately. This is not medical advice, just a suggestion from one bee to another. If you need more just let me know!

You should see results in about 3-4 weeks, take it from me, i’m a super sloucher too, but not anymore!!

There’s this workout DVD called the New York City Ballet workout, and they have you do some exercises where you lay flat on your back and do some leg extensions. I found exercises like that made me feel stronger and stand taller!

And ditto on the obnoxious FB ads. Teeth whitening, weight loss, photographers in my area, ugh!

I used to slouch all the time and had lots of problems with back pain, but I started doing Pilates about 10 months ago. My posture and back pain is doing so much better!

I have major problems with shoulder muscle knots, especially around my right shoulderblade. And that, combined with sitting at a computer all day, definitely takes a toll on my posture :(
Im considering going to a “body balance” class that combines tai chi, pilates and yoga to help…only problem is i have to find the monies for it first! Otherwise a strip of plaster down my back might work :P

Heavy chest here, too :P Plus I sit in an office that has very bad ergonomics, so it doesn’t help that I’m hunched over my computer all day long. I’ve heard, besides exercising, that wearing (walking in) high heels helps posture. Don’t know how true it is… but it makes it tempting to take my wedding heels for a spin ;)

Yoga yoga yoga! It’s the only thing that makes me stand up straight.

I have this problem too. I have a thinner frame and a large chest, so I’m always slouching over partly to hide my chest, and partly because it HURTS to stand up straight. I’ve been making a conscious effort to stand up straight, and on my wedding day, I had good posture in most of the pics at least. :) Just make a conscious effort to stand up straight!

I slouch all the time and I so do the store window thing too everyday… I walk home down through a strip of shops that glare my poster in my face. =( When I use to take an aerobics class, we used Theraband rubber stretch bands to strengthen our back. That worked great when I use to keep up with it.

As I don’t see myself doing that as I misplaced my bands/shouldn’t use them around future hubs (they are latex and he’s highly allergic), I’m going to pose as my step-sis (a retired model) says. Pop out your chest, hand on your hip and turn your head at an angle. Instantly makes you beautiful. =)

Yay boneyard! I have the same issues (right down to being in love with a compulsive photo ruiner!) and have found exercise is my best friend, especially pilates or other core-strengthening exercises.

So… any chance at getting the name of your miracle working chiropractor? I haven’t had one of those in years, and depending on what part of town it may just be worth the drive (I’m not technically in Vegas, but close enough).

Oh my gosh, I totally understand about the knots! My neck/shoulders tense up and sometimes I even get tension headaches that last days on end…pretty much until I do something (like get a massage) to loosen them up. Friends have in fact described the knots as crunchy haha. I wish I could afford massages more often…I’m in pain from it when I get really stressed :(
