Mrs. Spaniel's Picture
Mrs. Spaniel, Los Angeles Age and Occupation: 28, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Psychologist Wedding Date: March 2010 Venue: Calamigos Ranch About Me: I'm a third-year law student trying to balance graduating with starting my career, keeping up a relationship, and, oh yeah, planning an Old World, multi-cultural, "mountain lodge" wedding for 180 guests! A South Asian Jewish girl getting ready to marry my handsome Catholic Dane, I'm hoping to blend our cultures in our wedding just a bit more gently than by providing samosas as appetizers and offering æbleskiver for dessert. (Although that would also be awesome.)
About Mrs. Spaniel

I would like to take full credit for how beautiful the dining room looked, but I can’t—we picked Calamigos Ranch because we wanted something that was nearly finished already, and it was beautiful before we added a thing.

Aside from the centerpieces and menus, I didn’t really bring much—a couple of chair signs for me and Mr. Spaniel because I had leftover paper and ribbon, and none for anyone else because I didn’t have leftover time.

But it’s not real life if something doesn’t look just plain-out ridiculously awful, somewhere. Behold, the Hideous “Henna” Cake!

Do you remember my inspiration cake? No? I’ll show it to you.

You can tell that whoever was working on the cake was looking at the inspiration picture. What you can’t tell is what they were thinking. Or why they didn’t start over when they got those giant blobs of fudge smeared across the bottom tier.

I have to say, I thought it was pretty funny when I saw it. But I also wish I would have known just how bad it was going to look, so I could have saved the money on a “pretty wedding cake” and put together a much prettier and more cost-effective cake buffet instead. At least it tasted good!

All photos by the magical Meg Perotti, unless otherwise noted.

Miss anything?

Wow your reception was beautiful. The cake wasn’t that bad. I’ve seen way worse!

Your venue is gorgeous! I love all the details…I am sorry about your cake not turning out how you had hoped…it’s not that bad and I agree that I’ve seen much worse, but it’s your wedding and if they messed it up poo on them!

I actually think your cake is pretty, although I understand that it’s annoying when things are not even close to your inspiration photos!

That cake is really quite pretty! I didn’t notice the blobs until you pointed them out. And yes, it looks nothing like your inspiration, but, it still looks nice!

That venue is gorgeous! And the cake, well, you knew, but did anyone else notice? Maybe since they didn’t know, it looked great to them because it looked fine to me before I saw the inspiration.

Your venue looks incredible! And the cake isn’t too horrible - definitely not like the inspiration photo, but your guests didn’t see that so they don’t know any better! I would have been mad about it too, though!

The venue looks fantastic! I was also way disappointed with my cake, but that was because I was so nondescript about it, my bad.

1. beautiful venue
2. the cake actually doesn’t look bad
3. from the guest perspective, tasty is 100x more important than pretty. 90% of them won’t even have gotten close enough to examine the details and see the blobs (i only looked for them because you mentioned it). but they will remember that it was yummy and not nasty.

Okay, I’m the only one who thought our cake was fugly. ;) Maybe it wasn’t so bad.. we just had a look we were going for and picked the simplest design we could find to execute it and it was just SO NOT THAT!

Everything turned out amazing. What a blessing to have to do minimal decorating. Sorry about the cake :( Did you say anything to the baker about it?

I don’t think the cake’s too bad, either! I mean, it is a REALLY poor rendition of your inspiration photos, but I don’t think it’s ugly by itself, per se. The blobs along the bottom are maybe a little ugly. ;)

I can see why the cake was disappointing - there’s a pretty big gap between what you thought you were getting and what ended up on the plate. I’m a bit befuddled by the green roses. Were those part of your vision?

I don’t think it’s that bad! I agree, it’s not the best replica of your inspiration picture, but at least it tasted good! :)

Call me crazy, but I prefer the real-life cake to the inspiration cake.

Such a gorgeous venue!
At least the cake wasn’t a straight up “cake wreck”! Although, it certainly doesn’t match the inspiration pic.

All of your details look amazing! The cake isn’t that horrible, but I can understand that you would have rather saved the money if you knew it would turn out like that. At least you were able to take it in stride. :)

Oh no! haha I think the cake looks good, but not like your picture. I’m glad it tasted good- so you didn’t feel conflicted about cutting into your dream cake design and eating it!
