The Groom Steps Out

July 13th, 2010 @ 4:58 pm by Mrs. Earrings

It’s time to talk about the groom’s style. In the next week or so Mr E and I plan to embark on the Great Suit Hunt, so I thought we would let you in to what sort of “look” we have in mind for Mr E and the three groomsmen.

Firstly, tuxes are out (Mr E doesn’t like them and for our picnic garden wedding they just aren’t “right”). So suits are in. And we don’t want to buy Mr E’s suit, we would prefer to hire, as he has absolutely no idea when he is ever going wear it again.

A disclaimer: before this whole wedding thing I was basically clueless about the different styles of suits and ways they can be worn. Actually, I’m still clueless. But at least Mr E and I know what we like and don’t like in the way of groom “looks”.

For our daytime ceremony, a gray or charcoal suit seems to be the best option.

Mr E doesn’t like white suits, I’m not particularly drawn to linen, and we both like tweed but unfortunately all three suit hire outfits in Nelson don’t stock tweed. Gray or charcoal suits are easier to find, and they are classic and a bit less formal than black (in my un-suit-educated opinion).

Some gray suit inspiration for you today:

I prefer the darker gray of the above suits, plus I love their socks!

Cute Newsboy cap, aye? Too bad it wouldn’t fit over Mr E’s hair…

The last pic posted above also incorporates another aspect of the groom’s look that we are currently in love with: the vest. Personally, I think it ties everything together and adds an extra kick of “vintage” to our picnic (if we can find the right type of vest). Another idea we have regarding vests is to have Mr E in the full get up: vest and jacket, while the groomsmen lose the jacket and just have the vest. We can’t be sure if we will go that direction until the suits are tried on and we see how it comes together, but we are strongly leaning this way.

Doesn’t this groom below look all snazzy in his vest and jacket combo? *happy sigh*

These will be the inspiration photos that will guide us in our search, and hopefully we will succeed in making Mr E feel as good in his outfit as I do in my dress (ha well close to it anyway… I feel pretty damn hot in that dress!).

Ooh and one last inspiration pic for the groom, this time with shoes in mind:

I love, love, love the chuck Taylors! I’m thinking an early Christmas present may be in order for Mr E…

What “groom looks” inspire you?

Love this! Very similar look to what Mr. Cardy will be wearing (right down to the Chucks, actually! :) )

I love a gray suit. I wanted gray, but I also wanted tuxes… and there were very few gray tux options in fabrics too lightweight for Fall.

I love gray suits, but we’re doing black suits minus the jacket for the groomsmen and full tux for McGroom.

Love love love that first shot.

And chucks? You have to do it! Even better if you can get all the groomsmen wearing them. :)

Converse’s website (http://www.converse.com/) has an option to make totally custom Chucks, where you can pick the colors of all the individual parts (sides, rubber, laces, stitching, etc) to match your wedding colors. You can also have the back or side embroidered with a short message. We got these as gifts for all the groomsemen with the phrases: “Gman Jeff” and “Gman Jay”. Ours are black and Navy and look SO COOL. My pair say “GROOM” and I’m finding it really hard to resit the urge to wear them before the wedding. Here’s what ours look like: http://www.converse.com/#/products/shoes/converseone/builder/chuTayHiCan0901,,,209717200

I highly recommend this route. It’s so much fun.
