Mrs. Locket's Picture
Mrs. Locket, Ithaca, NY Age and Occupation: 25, Research Technician Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, former Banker hoping to become an Officer of the Law Engagement Date: June 15, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Heron Hill Winery About Me: I am a little bit of everything all rolled into one: A girly gal with rough edges---I love to get dolled up just as much as I enjoy throwing on some sneaks to toss a ball with Mr. Locket. My love for crafting and creating is quite apparent and I've been referred to as a Wonder Woman/Martha Stewart/Stepford Wife hybrid (yup, I'll take that as a compliment). I adore sewing, photography, sculpture, good eats (mmm tapas), baking, snugging and oh, pretty much everything in between (there's not much I dislike). I am super excited to be planning our vineyard wedding and couldn't be happier to be marrying Mr. Locket. We are a quirky, fun-loving couple residing in our college town with our two pups Maple and Molly. We love to go on hikes, visit our local dog park and to bask in the beauty of many of the local falls and gorges. We are an indecisive pair, but together we somehow manage to make up our minds (it's the easy stuff that's tricky).
About Mrs. Locket

… I can’t help but wish I had partaken in more dress shopping excursions before I found “the one”.

I know it may seem crazy to some brides… brides that are overwhelmed by the hours spent pulling jeweled encrusted piles of taffeta and satin over their heads. But, for me it was something I built up in my head as this uber-tastic experience. One where I would be with all my besties and both my Mom and future Mother in Law. We would laugh and giggle at the overly puffy princess dresses and ooh and ahh over the ones that looked great.

I had such high expectations for my dress shopping excursions that I didn’t stop to think of how impractical my ideal was. I blame the endless number of Friday evenings I spent watching TLC’s Say Yes To The Dress. In most episodes, brides came prepared with their entourages and spent hours trying on dress after dress after dress.

In reality, the bridal salons I went to had limits. I couldn’t try on every dress in the store and I could and would not spend hours on one appointment. Another downer was learning that the samples in most shops weren’t available in larger sizes.

My experience went a little something more like this…

Round 1

Here I am during my first dress search in July ’09 at David’s Bridal. I think I tried on 5 dresses total that day and only one was photo worthy (Style WG9821). On a side note, I didn’t have a great experience at David’s. I felt like I was being pushed out of there as soon as I came in. The associate was not helpful, she had no advice on shapes that would flatter my form or styles that would work for me. I was lucky to have my sister there to help find dresses because the associate just wasn’t cutting it.

Look at me with my hands on my hips, I can’t tell if it’s attitude or my attempt at hiding the arm fat.

And here I actually have a smile on my face. I really liked this dress, but didn’t love it. It had a great fit, but there wasn’t enough going on, it was too simple for my wedding day.

And here’s a picture of the train (please ignore back fat, the dress was a bit snug)

Round 2

Here are a couple pictures from my second round in dress shopping at a local salon in my hometown around Thanksgiving. I was really excited about this trip because I had lost about 7lbs since my last dress shopping trip. I was really hoping to feel super confident and picture perfect in these gowns as opposed to my last trip. (Side note: During my last trip I had a mini-meltdown and got overwhelmed because I was not comfortable with my appearance or with how the dresses were fitting.)

This time around though, things didn’t get better right away. Because the shop was smaller, most of their samples were size 6-8 unless the dresses were 18+. I was very nervous about this at first because I thought I would have an emotional breakdown like I did in the last trip. Fortunately, I didn’t. The sales associate was very attentive and worked with me to pick dresses that would work for my figure. She assured me that even when the samples were small I would be able to get a good idea of what the dress would look like in my size. I only tried on 3 dresses that day!! The third one ended up being the one! I only have pictures of one of the gowns to show you (mom is still learning how to use a digital camera and didn’t realize she wasn’t taking pictures of the first dress).

Here I am with an uncomfortable look on my face because there is a woman behind me pulling the gown tight. (ummm did she just touch my butt?) This dress was actually too big!

Okay, feeling a little more comfortable. (Wow look at how much longer my hair is compared to the last trip….maybe it will grow enough!)

But, no dice… this dress wasn’t the one for me. I liked the overall fit, but wasn’t a fan of the color (it was way too white) or the neckline (too straight across). And, sure enough the associate was right… I put on the size 8 sample of my Maggie Gown and knew it was everything I had wanted. It had the sweetheart neckline, lace details, and a little bit of sparkle. (Sorry, I just started daydreaming a bit.)

I won’t post a full out picture just yet, but here is her train. Isn’t the train just lovely?

How did your dress shopping trips go? Did you have a short shopping experience like me? Also, does anyone else hate the lighting in bridal salons?

I have a similar experience. I found my dress on my first day shopping. It was in the 3rd and last appointment for the day, I probably only tried on 10 dresses total, but when you know, you know

It was very special for me to go to a lot of fun dress shops, but honestly by the time I found my dress it felt like I was going to my 100th open house: In and out, quick glance to see if it has everything I wanted. There was no ceremony after a certain point.

Mine was the first dress I tried on but i refuse to buy it because I am afraid of having buyers regret!

I felt the same way about my dress shopping - I kind of wish I would have spent some more time looking, just for the experience!

What a beautiful train! Can’t wait to see the rest of it!
I found mine a whim, I was at home in NJ, had asked my mom last minute about looking at dresses with me (I just wanted her to be part of the process b/c she lives so far away) I was not expecting to buy a dress, especially b/c I was in NJ and shipping would be a hassle.

The only thing I knew was that I didn’t want strapless, so that (and my budget) cut my choices down a lot, BUT the first dress I tried on was the one… I tried on three others, one with lace that would have fit very well but lace isn’t exactly my wedding style, so instead I went for the first one, had to cancel my appointment back in Seattle and now I’m waiting for the dress to arrive in September!

I hemmed and hawwed awhile about it because I was bummed about not trying on any others, and OF COURSE the store was having a sale and the dress was on sale, so I felt a little bit of pressure to buy it. I think I love it, I’m waiting to see how it will really look in my size, it was way too big to really get a very good feel.

I too had this silly idea in my head that it would be a bonding experience with my gals, my mother in law, everyone. It was going to be so fun shopping for dresses, and everyone would help me agree and we would love it. It wasnt like that at all. Either the dress was wayy over budget, no one could go with me cuz they were working or doing something else important, or i would get stood up 10 mins before my appointment for no good reason. I even cried after one appointment cuz the clerk told me I really should bring someone along next time. ouch

Mine was the 1st dress at the 1st salon… it was also thousands of dollars out of my price range, but the salon owner offered me the sample dress (a one of a kind made by Rosa Clara) for thousands of dollars off…. I couldn’t bring myself to buy the very first dress… but seeing my mother in tears over how beautiful she thought I looked made me call that night to buy it.

The more dresses I see the more I know that I made the right choice. I love my dress more than anything else I’ve seen.

I think I tried on 12 dresses total over the course of two shopping trips to 4 different salons. I love my dress, but I do wish I had tried some other stuff on. I was super focused on finding the dress I wanted to wear, and refused to try on any of the fun/wacky dresses my mom and sister wanted me to try on.

I went to the Kleinfeld’s Blowout Sale in April and put on my first wedding dresses, bought one, and had no one with me. I feel like I totally missed out and am kinda sad about that. However, I did get #9, so I was stoked about that.

My situation was very similar. I went one place, tried on ten dresses. It was the second one that I put on… and we knew it…. but I tried on the others because I felt like I should! Then I spent the next year+ to my wedding questioning it. I even made a SECRET TRIP to try on another dress I had been lusting over. Thankfully, that dress looked AWFUL on and so I returned home content. I think the “perfect dress shopping experience” is a myth. Or at least belongs only to a very, very select few. :)

And yes, why can’t they pick anything other than overhead fluorescents for salon lighting? Don’t they know how AWFUL that looks!?

That train is beautiful! Can’t wait to see the rest! I wish my search for the dress had been a bit longer too, but I soooo did not want it to turn into a 7 month search like it was for my venue, so as soon as I saw my dress, I said Okay, and that was that!

I can’t wait to see the whole dress!! The train is lovely

I am 100% afraid I will have a mini breakdown when trying on dresses. I am almost never happy with how clothes look on me and I imagine this will be no different. Probably about 100 times worse.

I think part of the reason I borrowed my sister’s dress was so that I wouldn’t have to go dress shopping! I knew it would upset me if the experience was less than angels singing, and I knew that wearing the dress my sister had worn a decade before would be meaningful. And it was pretty. But still, I really didn’t want to get naked with a sales lady, you know?

I found my dress at my first salon and I think I tried on between 6-8 dresses. I had a great consultant, who took care of me, my mom, my FMIL and MOH, and found something under budget.

I guess I should mentioned that I’ve had a wedding binder since high school and I’m quite decisive.

I’m lucky it went so well, I know.
But, yeah, the lighting sucked balls.
