Mrs. Locket, Ithaca, NY Age and Occupation: 25, Research Technician Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, former Banker hoping to become an Officer of the Law Engagement Date: June 15, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Heron Hill Winery About Me: I am a little bit of everything all rolled into one: A girly gal with rough edges---I love to get dolled up just as much as I enjoy throwing on some sneaks to toss a ball with Mr. Locket. My love for crafting and creating is quite apparent and I've been referred to as a Wonder Woman/Martha Stewart/Stepford Wife hybrid (yup, I'll take that as a compliment). I adore sewing, photography, sculpture, good eats (mmm tapas), baking, snugging and oh, pretty much everything in between (there's not much I dislike). I am super excited to be planning our vineyard wedding and couldn't be happier to be marrying Mr. Locket. We are a quirky, fun-loving couple residing in our college town with our two pups Maple and Molly. We love to go on hikes, visit our local dog park and to bask in the beauty of many of the local falls and gorges. We are an indecisive pair, but together we somehow manage to make up our minds (it's the easy stuff that's tricky).

DIY: Personalized Wooden Spoons

July 15th, 2010 @ 1:39 pm by Mrs. Locket

Hey all!! As promised here is that tutorial to those wooden spoons I showed you in my last post. I made these for a friend’s bridal shower gift last fall and she absolutely loved them!

Prep steps:

  1. Pick out your font and decide what you want to write.
  2. Use Microsoft Word or some other program where you can type your font and create a mirror image.
  3. If using Word the easiest way to create a mirrored text is to use Word Art…type your message and then under Rotate (on your formatting palette) click “flip horizontal”. You should now see the mirror image of your text or image.
  4. Print off your image using a laser printer (apparently the heat transfer will only work with a laser printed image) and make sure the template will fit nicely on your spoons.
  5. Find yourself some wooden spoons (bamboo spoons should work too) preferably with a broad flat handle

These would be perfect: ( I found my spoons at Target for a few bucks)

Getting your spoons ready: (some of these steps may not be necessary depending on the spoons you find)

  1. The spoons I found were already marked with the Chefmate logo (which, sorry Chefmate, me no likey) and it had to go.
  2. Using a medium to fine grained sandpaper I hand sanded off the logo. (This didn’t take too much work.)
  3. Once you have the handle smooth and unmarked you can now place your text/image template.
  4. Using the heat transfer adapter on the Hotmarks tool transfer the image to the spoons by “ironing” over the image in a circular motion until the image is completely transferred. It is important to not move the image during the transfer process or it won’t come out clear. (Don’t worry if you mess up… you can sand off the transfer and start over)

Alternatively, if you don’t want to transfer an image or text you could also hand draw or write your image or text.

The photo below shows the process of prepping your spoons. As you can see the middle spoon is untouched and still logofied with the Chefmate logo, the spoon below it has been sanded clean, and the top spoon has had the text transferred to it.

And, here is a photo of my lovely Hotmarks tool with the transfer adapter attached.

Burn baby burn:

  1. Now that your image is transferred turn off your Hotmarks tool and let it cool.
  2. Change the adapter to the writing tip (there is also a finer point which I recommend for intricate fonts).
  3. Once your tool is hot enough you can begin “tracing” over your transferred image to permanently burn it into place
  4. You can also use some of the fun stamp adapters that come with your tool to burn other images in… I used the heart stamp :)

And, voila!! Your very own hand-personalized DIY wooden spoons:

And all you need to do is tie them together with some ribbon, add a cute apron, a cookbook and some other kitchen goodies and you have yourself a very cute bridal shower gift!

What do you think? Have you DIYed any projects that look like more work than they were? Is this tutorial helpful?

If you have any questions let me know… I would be glad to answer. :)

How rad!! How much does that tool cost? My FBIL has a woodburning tool but I don’t think it has all those cool attachments.

Thanks for posting the tutorial. I went to Jo-Ann’s to get the tool but they didn’t have it in the store. What kind of paper did you use to do the transfer? Is there a special kind for wood? Thanks again!

@Miss Hot Dog: it cost me $15 with my 50% off coupon at Michaels, so they run around 30ish range.@Trish: I bought mine from Michaels, but have also seen it in ACMoore..I used regular paper and I don’t think the wood needs to be special (just unfinished) I have also burned into bamboo and it worked.
