Mrs. Earrings's Picture
Mrs. Earrings, Fresno, CA/ Nelson, New Zealand Age and Occupation: 20, Student, Wannabe Writer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 19, Photography Student Engagement Date: February 14, 2010 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Gardens of the World About Me: I'm a girl from down under who grew up in Indonesia and I'm marrying a California boy. I'm addicted to all things sweet, have never met a chocolate silk pie than can get the better of me, and have dreams of one day being a fulltime novelist. I go weak in the knees for lace, tea cups, and a beautifully crafted sentence. When I get excited about something (whether it is historical linguistics or the Beatles) I tend to go overboard in research, and planning this wedding is no different. Mr. Earrings is my high school sweetheart, my best friend, and somehow we combine all our quirks into one big happy mess.
About Mrs. Earrings

Glad rags: formal or dressy clothes for a special occasion. As in, the BM dresses. I’m not sure if this is NZ specific slang or not (any Americans still use it?) but my mother always says it, so there you go.

When it came to figuring out what my bridesmaids would wear, I was a bit all over the place. I want them to feel pretty, I want them to be able to wear the dresses again (or at least delude myself into thinking they can wear them again), the dresses need to be appropriate for a not-so-formal but still elegant and English-y picnic wedding, AND they have to be $100 NZD or under (eek!). Oh yeah, and if the colour falls somewhere in the purple range that would be awesome.

During my search, I saved pictures of favourite outfits will-nilly and then when I got sick of inspiration and was ready to sort through it all I divided the dresses into two categories: The Stunning Impossibles, and the Gorgeous Possibles.

First, my Stunning Impossible beauties:

The Bridesmaids' Glad Rags Part 1: Inspiration : wedding bridesmaid dress new zealand M02 C m02+-+C

USD $395 from Saja Bridal

The Bridesmaids' Glad Rags Part 1: Inspiration : wedding bridesmaid dress new zealand Holly S holly-s

USD $295 “Holly” from Jenny Yoo

The Bridesmaids' Glad Rags Part 1: Inspiration : wedding bridesmaid dress new zealand Amandaa amandaa

Silk Ruffle Dress by Amanda Archer

Oh so beautiful, but oh so pricey. At least looking at “the unattainable” helped me figure out slightly the kind of dress I was going for.

What about some Gorgeous and Possible looks?

The Bridesmaids' Glad Rags Part 1: Inspiration : wedding bridesmaid dress new zealand Lavende lavende

“Lavender Labyrinth” USD $64.99 from Mod Cloth

The Bridesmaids' Glad Rags Part 1: Inspiration : wedding bridesmaid dress new zealand Bestdre BestDre

“Best Dress Ever” USD $59.99 from Mod Cloth

The Bridesmaids' Glad Rags Part 1: Inspiration : wedding bridesmaid dress new zealand Royalfl royalfl

“Royal Flush” Purple Ruffle Dress USD $49.99 found at Ruche

All right, I think that is enough purple dresses for one day. By the end of my search I felt completely overwhelmed by the options, and the fact that all my bridesmaid were in different corners of the earth was making it even harder to decide. How did we finally choose? Stay tuned for part 2!

I LOVE the Lavender Labyrinth one!! Don’t think it would suit a full-chested bridesmaid though.

Great inspiration dresses! I would gladly wear a lot of these if I was a bridesmaid. Love purple dresses!

I think Glad Rags (or a very siimlar sounding name) is the name of a company who produces reusable menstrual pads….

I definitely did a double-take and thought you were gifting them to your BMs for their gift….

I thought that was an interesting bridesmaid ’s gift, too! But I like the dresses…especially the less expensive ones, actually.
