Far Away

July 15th, 2010 @ 10:47 am by Mrs. Sand Dollar

I wanna go far away. I want a honeymoon that’s a) hot b) sunny c) relaxing. Mr. SD agrees. So where should we go?

I get the Travelzoo email every week, which has amazing deals on flights, hotels, and more. Last week we found an almost unbelievable one, one week in the Dominican Republic at an all inclusive resort including travel for $500/person. It seemed perfect!

The only downfall was we had to book within two days in order to take advantage of it, and we’re not usually trigger happy people. We’re banking that something this cool will come along closer to the big day. But a cruise or resort on the beach would be a great option for us.

The Grand Canyon is actually our top choice.

If we can figure out a way to do it under three grand, then this is probably what we’ll end up doing. We’re both pretty outdoorsy, and it’s such an interesting place. Yet, we can also hold off and go later in life when we have a family. So we’re kind of on the fence about it, when we could have an easy package deal for a tropical location. I’m sure once we get closer to W-day, we’ll hammer out exactly what kind of honeymoon we want.

Are you considering a domestic honeymoon? If so, where are you going?

Don’t wait too long. We waited until 4 weeks until the wedding, freaked out, and now, I don’t know if I like where we’re going. Where we wanted to go (Alaska) turned out to not be possible due to travel time (leaving on a Tuesday due to Sunday wedding). Now we’re going to Hilton Head because we’re just stressed from lying coordinators, cheap friends, and all the DIYing.

We booked early and IÄm glad we got that out of the way and that we can look forward to our honeymoon for that much longer! Also, I’ve been watching the website (Sandals) and the price has not gone down since we booked which makes us happy! Just paid off the balance last week for our September honeymoon to St. Lucia!

I really want to go to the Grand Canyon and we are planning it for 2011 but you scare me with your comment of “if we can figure out a way to do it for under 3 grand.” Is the Grand Canyon really that expensive? I will have to fly further but I didn’t expect lodging to be so expensive there. Maybe you could share some insights.

We’re thinking of doing San Francisco or San Diego - some beach time, some adventures (I wanna see the redwoods!) right now we’re just trying to work it out.

We considered AZ but decided against it because of their new immigration laws. They just made me want to not give them any money in terms of sales taxes or other tourist dollars.

Sooo… I’m originally from AZ. I love the Grand Canyon and it can be a fantastic honeymoon place… but I hate to burst your bubble on this. It’s not HOT there during the fall and winter. It actually will snow in November/December, so if you’re going right after to wedding in September/October expect mild Fall days. I mean, it’s still high desert and not cold or even cool compared to some parts of the country, but you might still need a sweater, especially in the evenings.

If you guys are thinking Grand Canyon and outdoorsy, you should really consider Sedona, Arizona. It is the MOST beautiful, romantic place I’ve been in forever. It’s a tiny spa-like town about an hour and a half from the Grand Canyon. I seriously couldn’t recommend it enough! Have fun planning!

Oh yeah… Sedona is one of my most favorite places in the world. There’s a not-too-popular hiking trail along Oak Creek and there’s one part that has a rock in the center of the creek, perfect for sitting on and hidden from the trail. Also, if you’re in for the road trip, you can drive another half hour to Jerome, funky little former mining town built on the side of a steep hill.

I was just clicking over to say the same thing as stephk23 — while Phoenix and Tucson will be hot in the fall, it’s unlikely the Grand Canyon will be, depending on what you mean by “hot.” The northern parts of Arizona, above the Mogollon Rim, is a very different climate. I love it in the fall, but it’s definitely a “fall” feel there.

Package deals in the Carribean are also really easy to come by and do as a family - I would do what you want most! Lots and lots of hiking would actually be more difficult with kids, to me, so I would go for the Grand Canyon - do it up right! :-)

I think the grand canyon would be an amazing place for a honeymoon! We went there a couple years ago, and did a one day river rafting trip, and the overnight mule ride to the bottom of the canyon. SO much fun!

We actually got engaged at the Grand Canyon! It easily THE most incredible thing I have ever seen in my life. If you do end up going to the Grand Canyon, you must go to the Skywalk…it was well worth the trip!
As for honeymoon, I have no idea where we are going. My fiance is in charge of the honeymoon entirely and is keeping it a secret. All I know is the departure date!

Grand Canyon sounds like a great honeymoon spot! I live in Arizona, and I’ve always wanted to stay at the Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the canyon. You have to hike there and it supposed to be amazing.

It is also really affordable, but books up far in advance.

we’re going domestic too, taking the train from Denver to SLC (2 days) to San Francisco (1 day) and then the ferry up to Napa for 5 days before flying back to Denver (10 days total, 2 on the train). We don’t have a lot of money, but we and our parents have been hoarding frequent flyer miles, amtrak, and hotel points on business trips for the past few years so that the only things we’ll have to pay for on our honeymoon is food and entertainment! Mmmm, I’m SO looking forward to fresh/tasty food in Napa and getting to go up in a hot air balloon!
