Luckily, I'm a pretty persuasive girl because I managed to convince my high school boyfriend (now fiance!), Mr. Cardigan, to ditch his hardcore Longhorn ways and join me up at A&M, where we currently reside with our adorable dogs, Cullen & Ranger. We're currently planning a bright, cheery wedding with a ridiculous amount of DIY projects that I can't wait to tackle! Organization is what keeps me sane and I love helping others, which is probably why I ended up as an education major. About Mrs. Cardigan

I have a problem. I’m obsessed with origami, and I can’t stop. Really, I love all paper-related crafts in general. Every time I see another paper project, my mind immediately starts coming up with ways I can use it in the wedding.

Can the theme of a wedding be “paper”?

Anyways, I was on one of my favorite blogs the other day, Young House Love, and I saw this cute little craft:

Can You Tell I Have a Thing for Origami? : wedding austin crafts decor diy Rr Mobi

Can You Tell I Have a Thing for Origami? : wedding austin crafts decor diy Rr Mobi01

(Source, for both)

I was smitten, immediately. I had images dancing in my head of these cute little guys hanging down from the ceilings, maybe even as a garland or something. I pulled up the tutorial and it looked pretty simple. It called for some pretty big paper, but I thought that would just be for a bigger star, so I decided to give it a go with my 12×12 scrapbook paper.

Um. This project? It’s HARD. It took me close to an hour to get one of these evil little things folded. It would take me FOREVER to fold enough of these to actually make a visual impact. On top of my crazy Kusudama balls, I’m thinking this project is just not in the cards.

In addition to it being almost impossible to make, it was TINY! Check it out:

Can You Tell I Have a Thing for Origami? : wedding austin crafts decor diy 31 3

Can You Tell I Have a Thing for Origami? : wedding austin crafts decor diy 41 4

That was made with 12×12 paper! I don’t even want to know how big the paper would have to be to make them a less-than-microscopic size!

So, while it was a great idea and I think it would be awesome for a wedding, it’s just not a project for me!

P.S. As I was taking these photos, this is what was going on behind me:

Can You Tell I Have a Thing for Origami? : wedding austin crafts decor diy 51 5

He was intently watching, to make sure I was doing it right. ;)

Did you attempt any projects, only to find out they are WAY out of your league?

Tiny but super cute though!! Esp. your dog. ;)
I know I’m bad at math but to get app. a 12″ paper ball, you’d need like, 48×48 paper? RIDIC!

haha I used to make those when I was little. I think they are of swedish orgin, and used to decorate for christmas. they were a little hard to master (I was probably like 9), but were pretty simple to do once you got the hang of them. I made mine out of paper strips though….

In regards to the origami - it might be necessary to use a HUGE piece of paper for them to be feasible. A while back, I tried making something out of smaller paper and was ready to throw the damn thing across the room in a fit of rage. And then, I tried making it with bigger paper and it was incredibly easy.
And your dog is freakin’ adorable, but are his eyes always gloopy in the corners? If so, he might have an imperforate nasolacrimal duct (there’s a tube that goes from the inner corner of your eye to your nose - it’s why your nose runs when you cry). Your vet should be able to test for it pretty easily - you just put fluorescein drops (the green stuff used to test for eye ulcers) into his eye and see if it comes out his nose. If it doesn’t drain, it’s often pretty easy to fix. Unless it doesn’t bother you, in which case, never mind :)

@redherring: Hm, I’ve never heard of that! I’ve known a lot of dogs to get the “tears” next to their eyes, so I figured it was just normal. They usually just look like that when he needs a bath (we always clean his eyes when he gets a bath, and they look great after that). We’ll have to ask our vet about it next time we take him in!

Your dog is adorable…um, what was this post about? Oh yeah, I love those balls too, but not as much as I love your dog. (In case my boys magically figured out how to read and use the interwebs, I love you more. You’re the best dogs in the WHOLE world. I miss you and I’ll be home soon. Don’t chew any wedding stuff)

I think everyone runs into the too big project from time to time…my biggest project problem is having way too many of them and having oh sooo little time to do them!
