Mrs. Veggie's Picture
Mrs. Veggie, Raglan, New Zealand/Scranton, PA Age and Occupation: 27, Director of Small Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 42, PhD Student & Farmer Engagement Date: June 13, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Indian Head Camp, Honesdale Pennsylvania About Me: I am a tree-huggin' farmer turned enthusiastic wedding-planner. I live in a house truck and wear flip-flops more often than shoes. In my old life I was a high school Spanish teacher in love with a crazy guy who lived off-the grid on a farm in New Hampshire. But, we decided to mix things up a bit, quit our jobs and move to New Zealand. My southern hemisphere lifestyle involves growing veggies, teaching, running our small non-profit, and surfing. I love laughing, singing, playing, and the inspirational Mr. Veggie (of course!). For our wedding, I am committed to throwing a killer party that celebrates our values without breaking the bank. Look forward to an eco-thrifty summer-campy weekend-long extravaganza.

Paper Garlands - Help Me Decide

July 16th, 2010 @ 2:32 pm by Mrs. Veggie

I have had this project on my radar for a long time now. I think it may even be on the original inspiration board I made about a year ago. So, with 5 weeks until the wedding, I guess it’s time to get going, which means it’s time to decide what shape I want to make the garland. Want to help?

I will be making our garland out of salvaged cardboard boxes and vintage sheets my sister has gathered from Salvation Army and Value Village.

One side will stay brown and the other side will be one of these gorgeous patterns. They will be strung from jute twine or hemp.

And here’s where you come in. I can’t decide what shape to make the garland. Originally I thought I would do birds, like the original project. I made a mock up out of paper and baker’s twine and this is how it turned out:

Then I started thinking that even though the birds are super cute, maybe there is something that represents Mr. Veggie and me a little better. So, I made a garland made of leaves:

And then once I got going, I thought maybe I could make something a little more “veggie”-ish for us. So I made a garland of beans and beany leaves:

Paper Garlands - Help Me Decide : wedding decor diy scranton Img 557 So what do you think? Should I stick with the oh-so-cute birds? Go with the pretty and natural shaped leaves? Keep it real with the beans? Can you tell what everything is? Does one stand out more than the others? Let me know.

Which shape should I choose to make my cardboard garland?

Personally, I like the birds. But then, I’m doing a bit of a bird theme with our wedding, so I’m biased. The leaves are pretty too. I’m not sure I would’ve known what the beans were if you didn’t tell us.
Side note- regardless of what you choose, might I recommend using a slightly heavier paper? It looks like some of the cut outs are starting to curl… especially the birds.

I like the idea of the other two but I think the birdies look better…

I voted for the birds. They look awesome. I couldn’t tell what the beans were and also the doubled up beans look almost um, vulgar if you know what I’m saying. Just a warning!

I love the birds because I’m always bird watching, so, for me, they’re awesome. For you, I like the leaves because the beans don’t look quite like beans. Maybe you could work with them, but you have 5 weeks. Let’s be realistic and go with something you already have.

I think a combo of the birds and the leaves would be super cute! The veggies are super cute but unfortunately I think the idea will get lost in translation- if you didn’t say that they were veggies I wouldn’t have known.

I couldn’t tell what the beans were, so I voted for the leaves, since you thought it represents you and Mr. Veggie more than the birds.

I agree with the others that the veggies are hard to identify and look a little weird. While the birds are cute, I voted for the leaves because they represent you more. And they are also super cute!

Birds and leaves! I was going to do this for a friend’s baby shower, but with jungle animal cutouts :) Can’t wait to see how yours turns out!

I agree with most of the commenters so far - I couldn’t really tell the 3rd one was “beans” without reading your explanation. And I REALLY don’t want to say what I thought they were at first glance!!

Birds! They’re really cute. The leaves say “fall” to me and you’re not getting married in the fall. And I worry that people wont understand what the veggies are.

The birds are definitely the prettiest. I think leaves could be possible, but the cut-outs need a more defined leaf shape (they’re a bit amorphous).

I’d like the beans if they were green paper (only because I wasn’t sure what they were..) I voted for the leaves because I knew they were leaves and they seemed more your style than the birds…
