Mrs. Cardigan, Austin Age and Occupation: 21, Student/Soon-to-be Special Education Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 20, Student/Soon-to-be Accounting Systems Analyst Engagement Date: August 16, 2009 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Vintage Villas About Me: I'm a native Austinite who was raised as a die-hard Aggie. Luckily, I'm a pretty persuasive girl because I managed to convince my high school boyfriend (now fiance!), Mr. Cardigan, to ditch his hardcore Longhorn ways and join me up at A&M, where we currently reside with our adorable dogs, Cullen & Ranger. We're currently planning a bright, cheery wedding with a ridiculous amount of DIY projects that I can't wait to tackle! I love crafting in any form, reading, and margaritas (I think I love them the most!). Organization is what keeps me sane and I love helping others, which is probably why I ended up as an education major. It gets a little chaotic sometimes when you're planning a wedding among all of the papers, projects, finals, and certification exams, but we're having the time of our lives and we can't wait to get started on our journey as husband and wife - and we're so excited to share our wedding with the hive!
About Mrs. Cardigan

I love our venue. Really, I do. And I love that they have a boutique hotel attached to it. It works so well for so many reasons, and I’m incredibly excited about it.

BUT.

I do not love the way they handle room blocks, because it stresses me the hell out. You see, they’re one of those hotels that punishes you if all of the rooms aren’t booked. You have to sign a contract for a certain number of rooms, and if you don’t manage to fill them all, you get to pay for them all. Awesome, right? I thought about just ditching the idea of blocking rooms there and block them somewhere else, but there aren’t many hotels near our venues, and most of them are also small hotels, which I assume will mean they’ll have a similar policy.

I was terrified to actually commit to a number of rooms, but they make it somewhat easier by offering blocks by the “villa” rather than just a room.

There are three “villas” (basically, three separate buildings) and each has anywhere from 12-17 rooms. If you block an entire villa, your guests are the only ones who have access to the villa (you have to have a key to enter the building), and they will also have a cute little lobby/hang out room where they can visit. It’s a really nice set-up, but I was scared to actually pick a villa and commit to that many rooms, especially when it wouldn’t be my credit card attached to the rooms - if we don’t book them, it’s my FMIL who has to pay up! Talk about stressful!

Finally, Mom Cardy, FMIL Cardy, and I sat down and made out a list (actually, we made three. Because we’re thorough) of who we knew would book a room there, and who might book a room there. With the people we absolutely knew would want one, we were at about 14 rooms, so we figured that it would be safe to book a villa. We decided on the “Central Texas” villa (appropriate, since we live in Central Texas!) which is the biggest one with 17 rooms. Funny that I was terrified to commit to any and we ended up booking the largest one, right? Well, our family is huge, and once we made the list(s) we were pretty confident that we wouldn’t have a problem filling it up!

One thing I love about the hotel is that each room is named after a city in the area the villa is named after. So, for example, our villa has rooms named after cities in Central Texas! Cute, right? The rooms are a bit country for my tastes, but it’s fun and I think our guests will enjoy it. Wanna see*?

Every room has either a patio (if it’s on the first floor) or a balcony. This is an example of the view the balconies have! Gorgeous, no?

Another thing I love? Upon booking our wedding at Vintage Villas, we were guaranteed the use of a suite on our wedding night for Mr. C and me. That’s awesome, but we weren’t going to be able to use it - you see, we’re going to have to stay at a different hotel after the wedding, because our flight leaves early in the morning and we’d like to stay a little closer to the airport. HOWEVER, when we were blocking the rooms, I talked to the wonderful woman helping us and she agreed to let me and the Cardy bridesmaids use the suite on the night before the wedding instead, at no extra charge! What’s even better? The name of our suite is the Austin suite - perfect, right? It’s very cute, and I’m super excited to spend the morning of my wedding here:

The living room of the suite - there is a King bedroom through the door on the left, and a HUGE bathroom for me to get ready in!

I love that there’s a table in there - should be very helpful for last minute DIY projects! There’s also a wet bar that’s not in the photo. I’m very glad this all worked out, because the bridal suite in the venue is pretty small, so we’ll be able to have some more room here for most of the day, then we can move to the bridal suite before the guests start arriving.

Where did you stay/will you be staying the night before your wedding?

3 of my bridesmaids and my mom and I are staying at a little 3 bedroom cottage on the lake the night before. THe awesome thing is that it is about 300 ft from the ceremony and reception venue. My bridesmaids will all gather there the morning of and we will spend the day there getting ready and taking pictures. Then we will walk over to the ceremony!! I cant wait!

PS - your hotel looks so beautiful! I think your guests will be really happy, I know I would - especially with that view!

Room blocks are so stressful, but I love your choice. It will be so fun for guests to all stay in the same place and have that hang out area.

Our hotel block has an attrition too. It’s making me super nervous because we blocked a TON of rooms for Columbus Day weekend. The hotel normally sells out that weekend because of apple picking and leaf-peepers coming up to New England. We’ve had barely anyone book rooms so it’s making me a wee bit nervous.

Your hotel looks beautiful! I hope your guests take advantage of the room block there!

That would freak me out, too. I guess in Spokane they don’t do that….we looked at several hotels in the area and they all offer discounted wedding rate that our guests just request when they make reservations! So we just made a couple recommendations on our website. Sounds like we’re lucky to have this set up! So proud of you for being able to make a decision so easily!

funny i just read this post after i got off of the phone YELLING at the hotel we reserved a block at..they keep telling people the block is sold out, even though the wedding isnt for 7 months and there are plenty of rooms (i only yelled because this problem has been going on for 6 weeks).

anyway, good luck on filling the block–it doesn’t sound like you’ll have a problem. the suite that you’re staying in the night before the weddingis totally adorable!

Wow - this looks great! And I am totally with you on the horrors of booking hotels… It’s been a nightmare for them to give us even a price or reservation more than 2 months in advance!

Wow. Nice rooms! I am jealous. LOL. We decided against room blocks also. Our hotel has the same policy and I couldn’t justify losing that kind of money because someone didn’t show up or didn’t need the room. Everyone has decided to book their own rooms if they need them. I am glad we decided against them…as of now we only have 1 book room!

the hotel i wanted in MN did that too and I promptly took my business elsewhere. Us brides have enough stress to deal with and I don’t think we need to be worrying about covering the cost of rooms that don’t get booked.

that looks really nice!

our Inn is weird - we can book up to 20 rooms in the block, and can add on more if they have capacity. They give the option of either us assigning the rooms, or the Inn - because people are choosing different dates, it’s something we need to manage.

But we have to release the room block 2 months before the wedding. If we don’t release the room, then we are responsible for paying for it (we put down the deposit on the rooms, but the guests pay). While we have about 60% booked now, I know we have some more OOT guests and I don’t know if they’ll confirm with me in time. They can stay there if there are rooms available, but they won’t get the discount rate.

Wow, awesome set up! Hotel blocks were stressful for me too but we eventually got lucky - and we wound up with 40 rooms taken!

Also scary, we just went to a wedding this weekend where the bride and groom reserved rooms on their credit card. Even though the guests booked them, on check out the staff didn’t remind them to pay with their own, they just had to sign a piece of paper. So they may end up being stuck with a whole lot of rooms!

Love the private lounge - we were too terrified to sign a contract and went with a different hotel than we had planned originally.

We completely gave up on room blocks and let people fend for themselves. We were in a resort town with no end of room options, and we figured there was no way to please everyone. Plus, it was a small enough wedding that we weren’t going to score amazing deals anyway.

I love that the hotel does villas! That’s so neat. It’s like having a mini-hotel for just your guests!

i hate room blocks!! totally stress me out - my hotel tried to tell my guests that the block was full - and we hadn’t even sent out invites yet! and i also hate how each night is considered a room in the contract - makes it so hard to figure how many people will stay in the rooms on which nights… grrr

Those villas seem perfect for hosting a group of your family members! I wish something like that was available here. We used hotelplanner to book a block of rooms at a local hotel for our guests and we are staying at a different hotel both the night before the wedding and the night of.
