Mrs. Cardigan's Picture
Mrs. Cardigan, Austin Age and Occupation: 21, Student/Soon-to-be Special Education Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 20, Student/Soon-to-be Accounting Systems Analyst Engagement Date: August 16, 2009 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Vintage Villas About Me: I'm a native Austinite who was raised as a die-hard Aggie. Luckily, I'm a pretty persuasive girl because I managed to convince my high school boyfriend (now fiance!), Mr. Cardigan, to ditch his hardcore Longhorn ways and join me up at A&M, where we currently reside with our adorable dogs, Cullen & Ranger. We're currently planning a bright, cheery wedding with a ridiculous amount of DIY projects that I can't wait to tackle! I love crafting in any form, reading, and margaritas (I think I love them the most!). Organization is what keeps me sane and I love helping others, which is probably why I ended up as an education major. It gets a little chaotic sometimes when you're planning a wedding among all of the papers, projects, finals, and certification exams, but we're having the time of our lives and we can't wait to get started on our journey as husband and wife - and we're so excited to share our wedding with the hive!
About Mrs. Cardigan

Okay, so maybe that’s a little dramatic. But y’all, I was terrified of this thing for days. It sat on the table next to our television just mocking me for almost a week after we got it. Because I’m a huge wimp. What am I talking about?

Well, it requires a bit of back story. Several months ago, Mrs. Frozen Yogurt blogged about this amazing wedding band and I was smitten. It’s so incredibly unique and romantic, and I knew I wanted to get one for Mr. Cardigan. Luckily, he liked it just as much as I did.

When I first heard about it, we were still over a year away from the wedding, so it seemed silly to buy it (and I was broke). For months, I kept telling myself that as soon as I had some extra money, I’d order it. But somehow it just never happened. I got some extra money, and then I went shopping instead. Oops. :)

Anyways, I finally decided that we’re getting close enough to the wedding for me to really get serious about this wedding band business, so I decided to bite the bullet and order the ring. A few days after I ordered it, I got a package in the mail that contained all of this:

You see that sheet of paper? The one that says “Finger Impression Instructions”? Um, yeah those are the directions on how to do this. 21 steps worth of directions, to be exact. Once I saw that sheet of paper, I promptly had a minor panic attack and then shoved the entire kit on the table next to the television and there it sat. For about 5 days. And every time I looked at it, I felt like a failure. Maybe I’m just a huge wimp, but it was so terrifying! I only had four chances. What if I screwed up? What if I am not competent enough to make a fingerprint impression and the inside of Mr. C’s ring ended up looking like someone just scratched it up?!

Needless to say, I got myself so worked up about this whole ordeal that I couldn’t bring myself to do it until Wednesday. I had the day off and didn’t have much to do, so I decided that as soon as Mr. C got home from class we would do it. And then it would be done and I could stop freaking out about it. So, he got home and I sent him into the kitchen to get everything ready while I read the directions out loud.

His face, upon seeing how long the directions were. He told me, “I don’t have all night!”

While he got things ready in the kitchen, I soaked my finger in warm water to raise the fingerprint (aka: make my finger pruny!)

(See that adorable little photo book in the corner? I’ll tell you all about it soon!)

Once everything was ready in the kitchen, I went in there to start making finger impressions!

Waiting for the water to get to the right temperature

Pressing down as hard as I could to ensure a good fingerprint! (I don’t know why Mr. Cardigan didn’t take a picture of more than just my hands. He’s not very good at this whole blogging thing.)

Rinsing it with cold water before taking it off

While I did this, Mr. Cardigan and the dogs gave me some moral support:

Ranger likes to hide in the corner. He’s weird like that.

Annnnd, I did it!

My Most Terrifying Etsy Purchase Ever : wedding austin rings 10 10

Yay! And it wasn’t nearly as scary as I thought it would be!

We repeated the process four times, and ended up with four not-bad finger impressions!

We mailed it back to the awesome people at Fabuluster the next day, and we should have the ring in about 6 weeks! I’m so glad I finally decided to face this terrifying project and get it taken care of. That’s one more thing crossed off my list!

Did you have any projects that you were terrified to start? Please tell me I’m not the only one who is scared of something they bought on Etsy!

We got these too, and they turned out fantastic! I even had a strange shape request - mine is an octagon - and they still turned out perfect. He’ll love it!

OMG, Thank you x1million for posting this!!! I found those rings a while ago and fell in absolute love, however my grandparent-like fear of purchasing anything via the interwebs has held me back. That, coupled with not being able to find any reviews from anyone who’s actually purchased the darn things and gone through the process drove me to zales, jareds and a slew of other jewelry stores which did nothing but disappoint. With our big day less than 3 months away (10^3!!) we decided that by this Friday we will make a decision about the rings - after reading your experience, I think I’m ready to go ahead and get myself the kit :) Thanks!!!!!!!

WE GOT THIS RING!!!

This is the ring DH got. I was so nervous about doing it perfect, wondering if my fingerprints were “good enough” and if I’d done it correctly. We also stressed over if it would be the right size and finish (despite describing and measuring endlessly).

IT CAME OUT PERFECT!!
All I can say is that it was exactly what DH wanted - exactly. The size, finish, fit and fingerprint were perfect. I could not recommend them more!!

PM me for more questions and photos - we have awesome ones w/his macro lense!

We actually went to the designers shop up in Maine! We met with his wife and she was just fabulous :) We are soooo excited to get our rings. We went to the shop since I was worried we would somehow mess them up…and it was very fun because she was there to help us and make the appointment very exciting! Y’all will love em!

I totally understand, we’re having them do a heart pendant for my daughter with my fingerprint and my fiancee’s fingerprint on it. The process was a bit daunting but it’s all done and now we’re just waiting to see it… can’t wait!!!!

Haha, your post looks eerily like the one I did a few months ago when I was doing the ring impression kit!

One piece of advice: when you get the ring, there will be a lot of definition (darkness in the grooves of your fingerprint)…aka the fingerprint will stand out to the naked eye really well. However, make sure you have Mr. C put it on for a while, or clean it really well before the wedding day! We only had Mr. B try it on once when it first arrived, but once he had it on his hand for a few minutes after the ceremony, his ring finger turned black (probably because his hands were a little sweaty) - the black stuff on the inside was rubbing off! After he washed his hands a few times, the blackness went away. You can still see the imprint really well though…although I wish that I would have known to clean it out before the wedding day!

Oh, man. I would totally have been anxious if I only had four tries, too! That’s not much of a cushion for F-ups.
