Not Your Average Registry

Not Your Average Registry : wedding houston registry Registr registr

Mr. SD and I have a rather common situation for couples nowadays. We’ve both been living on our own for a while (he decided to enter the workforce before he went to college), so we have pretty much everything we need in housewares.

In fact, if I see another pair of tongs I might scream. So when it came time to decide on a registry, it was easy: honeymoon registry! To sum it up, it’s a newer, more polite way to ask for cash. You sign up for an account (we chose Honeymoon Wishes), then fill up your registry with activities. For example:

We started with our cruise accommodations and excursions. You estimate how much the total cost would be, then you can split it up into smaller gift options (so, $250 into 10 gifts of $25). It’s fun!

You can choose to use the options they provide (and it’s customized based on your type of vacation) or write up a description on your own. So far we haven’t received anything, as we’ve yet to send out invitations. But guests can pay online with a card or checking account, or even mail in a check if they want. Then we can either link it to our bank account or withdraw using PayPal. I can’t wait to see things start rolling in, and to finally leave on our honeymoon!

Any other brides out there with a honeymoon registry? Which website did you choose?

I’m curious to hear what people’s experiences have been with these because I’ve often thought about it. Do the websites take a cut of the money given? If so, how much? Are there any websites that don’t take a cut?

We did a honeymoon registry, too. We’ve been living together for almost 4 years, so we don’t need a whole lot of stuff. We are paying for the actual honeymoon, but have registered for “extras,” like excursions and upgraded transportation. There are people out there who think it’s “tacky,” but we’d rather give peope the opportunity to buy us something we’re going to enjoy rather than buy us a bunch of stuff that we don’t need and will probably return anyway. We’re using HoneyFund. @cc2260 - Most honeymoon registries take some cut. I think HoneyFund takes 3%. They pretty much have to to cover the credit card fees. HoneyFund sets it up so you can link it to a Paypal account, so we have it set up to go directly to our Honeymoon savings account.

I love this idea - I kind of wanted to do a honeymoon registry, but Mr. C said no (plus, it would probably spoil our surprise honeymoon anyways!)

I’m registered with Honeymoon wishes too! I also had to register in a store for those you don’t like the idea of paying fo our honeymoon. But in talking to family and friends, most have been pretty positive about the idea, especially since they know that registering for gifts was going to be impossible for us since we combined 2 complete households.

We’re using Honeyfund as well and @emaa5w, they only “cut” we saw was with people using Paypal, and that was to cover the Paypal fees of 3%. They run just on ads, I believe, but we paid $29 to have the “upgraded” version without ads and lots of pictures so I think that’s how they’re making money. I highly recommend it! We’re still 2.5 months from our wedding and we only have a few things left on it!

Great idea Miss Sand Dollar!

This is a really neat idea–But I don’t think FI would want it! Well, still, we haven’t lived together, and he bought a house, so we have some stuff (the cheap wal-mart off brand kind). So we’re probaby going to just register for upgrades =)

I think in the future we will use this, my only hesitations are: will older generations think this as weird/rude? Do I care? I think my friends would think this is great. I think it’s great- we have a lot of things and we don’t NEED enough to adequately fill a registry.

We used Honeymoon Wishes too and it was fabulous! Our guests loved it. Our family relayed to our guests that if they wanted to gift us with something, to check out our Honeymoon Registry. We ended up not paying a dime for our 10 day Maui honeymoon. It was amazing!

Yes… we still ended up with a few weird gifts that were neither on our small Bed, Bath and Beyond registry or Honeymoon registry, but that is to be expected.

We did this as well as we’re in the same boat. Like many of the brides above, we also choose Honeyfund because they didn’t take such a large percentage. I did register at two brick & mortar stores for the shower, etc but I did put a blurb on our web site about why we want the gift of a honeymoon compared to traditional gifts.

We are using Traveler’s Joy. I think they take a 3% cut but they can give in any form they want and we can receive the funds in multiple ways as well. No adds. They were recommended to me by my girlfriend who used them for her wedding registry and I have been very happy so far. We have received gifts from about 3 people so far and I haven’t even sent out the invitations it’s just mentioned on the wedding website.

I’m not using any other registry so I figure I probably won’t get any bridal shower gifts but we frankly don’t need anything so that’s okay.

Awesome! I’m so glad to read success stories from other brides. I was pretty afraid we wouldn’t get many gifts this way. Our invites just went out today, so I’ll keep my fingers crossed that gifts will start coming in!

We used Honey Luna and they do not charge a fee and send you an actual check instead of going through paypal.

@FutureGulick: We also set up a Honeyfund account for the added $29. To avoid the paypal cut, it is possible to skip the whole paypal route. In our case, what that means is that guests will “reserve” which ever item they are “purchasing” for us, then bring/mail a check or cash for that amount with a certificate that the site will print our for them. We haven’t sent our invites out yet either, so we have yet to see if it will work. I kind of think people will rely on our traditional wedding registry (bed, bath and beyond), but if we get anything to go towards the honeymoon we will love it!

Awesome detailed info - thank you! I’ve heard about this for a few years now, but never had the courage to really look into it. Splitting the denominations is definitely less … forthcoming, and def’ looks like it could work!

We used HoneyLuna for our honeymoon registry for Peru and it was AWESOME. We got about 1/2 of our honeymoon paid for through HoneyLuna. We had looked at HoneyFund but did not like that one bit — with HoneyFund our guests would literally just either give us a check (what’s the point of having the registry then) or they’d have to use paypal — and not everyone has a paypal account. Plus, Honeyfund doesn’t even have an 800# that our guests could call with questions or to place an order! With HoneyLuna, they made it so easy for guests to shop online and use their credit cards. It made it more like a real gift registry experience — which is great since this is new for a lot of people. I hope HoneyLuna gets an anniversary registry so I can use it again for my 10th, 25th and 50th!!

We had looked at Honeyfund to but thought the same thing. We worried that our older family would really want to talk to someone and they definitely don’t know how to use Paypal! We’ve only gotten a few gifts so far from our Honeymoon wishes registry but we are so excited! My aunt even called us and said she called their office to place her order and they were really nice and helpful. I can’t wait to see how many more gifts we get as its closer to my shower. We feel totally comfortable that my friends and family will be helped out even if they’re not computer savvy or have a paypal. We feel really good about choosing to go with a real registry service now if we can just decide where to stay on our honeymoon?

we’re using http://www.DepositAGift.com for ours…well actually it’s sort of a combo of a honeymoon and new home fund. that’s one of the reasons that we went with them b/c they let you register for anything. all guest feedback has been smooth sailing, which is how we felt during set-up, so it’s all good :)

http://www.weddingrepublic.com also allows you to post your honeymoon on your wish list and anything else you want / need. Best of both worlds and its all online. Good luck to all the brides to be above!

We’ve been getting a pretty good response with our honeyfund so far! We are about 3 weeks out from the wedding so I’m thinking we will start receiving more gifts as it gets closer. PayPal does take 3% of the money you receive which kinda sucks, but when you think about it it’s only $3/$100, and so it’s worth it to us because it’s so convenient for people to use. Plus we figured that since people can use their credit cards we might be more likely to get a larger gift. LOL. :-x.

Even if they don’t have PayPal, guests can still “reserve” the gift & just send a check or give it to us @ the wedding. You can also disable the PayPal option & just request cash/checks be sent to your home or given @ the wedding. :)
