Heat Waaaaaave

July 19th, 2010 @ 5:56 pm by Mrs. Lobster

According to the local news, we are officially in a heat wave… that is 3 consecutive days of 90F+.

Besides dreaming of Popsicles and pool parties, I’m dreaming of…

… our engagement shoot. Unfortunately it’s not a pool-themed shoot. Instead we’ll fully clothed which includes this dress for me:

Anthropologie

And something similar to this outfit for Mr. Lobster:

J.Crew

Our only accessories will be our smiles and this little guy:

Yep, that’s how he’s gonna look all hot and stuff

I don’t do well in the heat and if you recall, neither does Mr. Lobster but it’ll sure be like the day we met one sweaty August four years ago. Stay tuned for the results…

Have you taken pictures in the heat of the summer? What advice do you have to stay cool and pretty?

I need some tips too! Right now the temperature is about 95 with a heat index of 110 here in KC. We are taking our engagement photos on August 26th (luckily in the evening). The evening should be better, but with the humidity so high it doesn’t always work that way. I pass out in high heat and FI sweats like crazy… it’s making me nervous!!

Are there any cool local ice cream shops around? That would be a great way to stay cool, and would be a great visual pop!

Lots of cold water on hand and an umbrella to stay out of the sun while you walk between pics. A handkerchief to blot your faces is handy.

I just had my engagement photos done this past weekend. I know Canadian heat isn’t all that comparable to what you have in the US…but it was 31 degrees Celsius (that’s about 88 F) and around 85% humidity.

I suggest you try using Smashbox anti-shine (it keeps my face matte ALL day). Also, wear your hair up if it tends to fall flat/pouf out in humidity (as mine does). Finally, try to cool off in water if you can - we took a ton of pictures with our pants rolled up in the river!

We just did our e-shoot on a 90+ degree day with about 40% humidity too! In Michigan though.

One thing that helped a LOT for us was that we started at 7am. We got awesome morning light + it didn’t start to get sweat-dripping-hot until about 9, and we wrapped up by 10.

I would recommend bringing water though. We were both totally parched by the end of our session.

I know stores like Brookstone sell personal battery operated fans that are small enough to put in your purse. Could be good for a cool off in between pictures!

You’ll have so much fun! I second the ice cream shop - that would be a blast…and make for some awesome photos!

We had a hot shoot too! (just got our pics back!!!) BRING WATER, and a towel- I forgot a towel for Mr. Thimble, but we were okay- You’ll definitely get a bunch of beautiful shots, and just expect some awkward sweaty ones too :) but the most important part is jiving with your photog in prep for wedding day.

Yikes! Stay hydrated and make sure to duck into some cool places in between the places you photograph.

Oh, and for actual advice, maybe one of those portfolio electric fans we used to run around with in summer camp. An ice pack to the back of the neck can do wonders, too.

Hmm…that definition of “heat wave” confuses me because it has been over 90 since memorial day in VA minus two days I think…and I’m not even in the real south!
