A Cake is a Cake is a… Cookie?

July 19th, 2010 @ 9:45 am by Mrs. Husky

I hate cake.  I always have. No, I’m not worried about bodily expansion, and it has nothing to do with the wrath of the dentist. It’s the texture – so spongy and dry. Don’t get me wrong, I love desserts. But my poisons are pies (especially pecan and marionberry!) ice cream, dark chocolate, and my very favorite: cookies. I am particularly drawn to big, squishy cookies, and, well, when the Girl Scouts start showing up with boxes of Tagalongs at my local grocery store, I have a very hard time walking past.

At a very young age, my mom realized that I would turn my nose up at any birthday cake presented to me.

She quickly figured out a cookie-cake was the way to go – they’re pizza-sized cookies, iced with birthday wishes. I had often thought about how to handle the cake dilemma on my wedding day, long before I ever met Mr. Husky. I’d considered stacking several cookie-cakes together, and then icing them. But even I, a diehard cookie lover, didn’t like the thought of a cake-sized slice of pure, solid cookies. Once we became engaged, I became engrossed in wedding blogs, and began seeing card boxes created to look like cake replicas (see Miss Cola’s and Mrs Lamb’s).

So we decided to have Cookie Cake v2.0. We ordered a set of nesting hat boxes from Consumer Crafts, and we’ll stack three of them to fill with cookies. The outside will be iced, just like your everyday cake, and then the inside will be filled with a variety of baked goodness. Back when the Girl Scouts were torturing me every time I tried to grocery shop, I purchased fifteen boxes of tagalongs – and immediately stashed them in my parents’ garage freezer so I don’t have to look at them!

So now I have the fillers for the top tier, but what about the other two? What are your favorite kinds of cookies? Would you be disappointed if there was no cake at a wedding you attended?

You def. need some good old fashined chocolate chip! Or maybe some sugar cookies that are your theme? You could frost them to look like different things!

I also dislike cake, but my FI loves it, so we are having a bride’s pie as a twist on a traditional groom’s cake. I would be a big fan of cookies, though. Do one classic chocolate chip and one for people with allergies or milder tastes, like shortbread or snickerdoodles.

I am a cake fiend, so I would be a little disappointed with no cake, but if I were appeased with Tagalongs, I would get over it VERY quickly (I also have to run the other way when I see the girlscouts coming!)
I’m not so sure about icing the boxes - wouldn’t that be messy to undo? Without the icing, then you could just have folks take around the boxes of cookies as each “layer” is served

We totally snatched up tagalongs and samoas to use on our dessert and candy buffet table! They are hidden away too and the other day my lil bro (who is staying with us) came across them and asked us if we had a cookie hoarding problem.

I love the idea of not doing a cake. I’ve honestly never been to a wedding where the cake tasted good :(

We’re going to do a dessert buffet (not a candy one, but pies, tarts, macarons, etc) and then do warm CC cookies served with milk as people are leaving. So I’m a huge fan of some other treat in lieu of cake!

yum! GS cookies are a great way to go! I also love black & white cookies - you could throw some of those in there for any of your guests who are cake fans, since they are cake-ish (and delish-ish!)

Snickerdoodles are my favorite, and if you have time, you could even make them yourself. I also love oatmeal-raisin cookies!

honestly, i would be a bit disappointed but that’s just because i’m kind of fanatically obsessed with cake. i look for cake at pretty much every party i attend. but as long as there is something sweet to eat, i’ll be fine. my fave is chocolate chip. yum. sooo good

What a coooool idea! I <3 Girl Scout cookies!! Hmm, since you’re getting married in Oct (hollaaa!) how about like a pumpkin spice cookie? And I don’t think I’d be tooooo dissapointed if there was no cake at a wedding. I mean whatev! Half the people don’t eat it anyway it seems. (The cake I had at the last wedding I went to was sooo bad, I wish I could un-eat it.)

What a cute idea! Also look into renting cakes, there are lots of similar ideas with foam or empty interior and fondant icing exterior that allow you to make the cake just how you want.
