About Mrs. Starfish

Mr. Starfish and I are both horrible dancers. Mr. Starfish doesn’t like to dance, and even though I love to, I’m just no good. But, we are really good swayers.

First Dance: Natural or Choreographed? : wedding dance newport Dress Swaying at our senior commencement ball

A while back we considered doing dance classes, and by we, I mean Sister Starfish and I thought it would be fun to take dance lessons before her wedding last year with our grooms-to-be. Neither of the guys were crazy about the idea, but were more open to doing it if we all did it together.

But, as always things got in the way and we never did schedule those classes.

A month before Sister Starfish’s wedding, we went to cousin Starfish A’s wedding. He and his wife did take dance lessons and it was the most adorable first dance I had ever seen. It really made me want to take lessons.

Mr. Starfish was still hesitant. Although we both loved cousin Starfish’s dance, Mr. Starfish doesn’t like the idea of choreographing ours, he thinks it will be more fun to make it up as we go. He plans to do a few dips and spins, but doesn’t want me to know when they are going to happen. He thinks I’ll have more fun and let loose if we just let the dance unfold.

I don’t like surprises, but I’m going to let our first dance be Mr. Starfish’s thing and let him take the lead. He’s excited about this (or just really doesn’t want to take lessons), so I’ll have to trust him and have fun in the moment.

Will your first dance be choreographed or are you going to just see what happens on the dance floor?

We’re taking dance lessons so our dance will be semi-choreographed. We know the basic order that the steps go in, but we can modify them the day-of, based on what we’re comfortable with at the time. My fiance was really into taking lessons though, so we both really enjoy them!

We swayed for the first verse and then had all our guests join us for the rest of the song (which is sorta upbeat, Sonny and Cher’s I Got You, Babe) bc the thought of dancing to the entire song in front of everyone was just not appealing!

I really want to take a lesson or two not so much for the choreographing but more to just learn a step or two to break up all the swaying. I love your idea to let him take the lead and surprise you. I am sure it will be lovely

Our first dance will be normal, but the father/daughter dance will be, my dad had this “great” idea to do a slow dance and then break out into chorographed movements, not my cup of tea but I told him he could choose whatever. We’ll see how it goes…

I think that we are doing the same thing that sboston06 is doing. We are taking dance classes (1 class every 2 weeks for 2 months = 7 lessons) and are learning steps, but it is not really choreographed. I know that there will be dips and spins, but I do not know when they will happen. It is all up to my hunny. As for taking one or two lessons, bklynldy, I recommend doing more than that or you won’t feel comfortable enough to actually use the steps you are learning. I have taken the 7 lessons and I am still not 100 percent comfortable. Enjoy your first dance *^-^*

our wedding is next month and we’re on dance lesson 4. so far we’ve got all the fox trot steps down! neither of us are dancers and my FI can’t hear the beat but we have a great instructor who has really made us feel comfortable.

we now know how to turn and dip and do a great promenade but i still won’t ‘know’ when they are coming since the man always leads!

we choreographed the entrance but as for the dance itself i am just going to follow his lead.

i highly recommend the lessons - we love and look forward to them every week!

Good luck!

I’m thinking dance lessons. Cause I’m usually the one who ends up with a dance partner going “Ow! Why did you do that?” Or “Ow! I was trying to spin you the other way!” Or “Ow! … ” You get the idea.

I really want to do a choreographed dance… because I have NO dancing ability :) And I dont want us to end up look like middle schoolers at a valentines dance. I’m sure you guys will have a great first dance. And its awesome that your fiance wants to suprise you with dips and twirls. Very sweet!

We are going to sway until our hearts content - or until the song stops, whichever comes first. ;)

I would suggest giving your man a glass or 3 of wine and practicing in your living room. If he is anything like my husband he will think this is totally redic but will cave in after a cocktail or two. That way you can see if you really think you can pull off just going with the flow.

Our first dance wasn’t choreographed per se (or, at all), but we had 2 basic moves we just repeated over and over :)

I have no idea yet! The Mr. wants to actually do a ‘fun’ first dance, but he’s a much better dancer than I.

No one believes our dance wasn’t choreographed, which I suppose I should take as a compliment….

Anyway, we’d been taking dance classes for the fun of it for years, so I just followed his lead.

We totally just did the “8th grade sway” for our first dance. Mr C is NOT a dancer, so I always have to take the lead. So dance lessons were very low on his priority list.

I’m actually super surprised at how popular taking dance lessons seems. I have ballroom dance in my background, but I wouldn’t be particularly interested in using it for our first dance. I think I just prefer the genuine love that shows through when the couple just keeps it simple and dances cheek-to-cheek! After all, you don’t have to put on a show for your guests. I think you should embrace his preference for an unchoreographed dance — it’ll be so sweet!
