I really wanted to wear my mother’s wedding shoes on my wedding day. They were her splurge 22 years ago—she hunted the streets of Auckland for them, and finally found them in a tiny boutique. They’re white leather dainty kitten heels, with a pointy toe that isn’t too pointy. Unfortunately, right now they happen to be somewhere in a giant storage unit and we have absolutely no way of locating them without unpacking twenty years of stored stuff.
I haven’t found a real picture of them yet (sorry!) but these are sort of similar to give you an idea (you know, without the big blue bows):
Found here
The solution: find another pair of shoes, because in all likelihood we will never find my mum’s shoes in time and if we do they might not even fit.
The only problem: every other shoe I looked at wasn’t “right”. I’m not a shoe person (I’m an earrings person!), so I have never looked at that many shoes in depth, and I was definitely not expecting to discover that the shoe hunt would be so frustrating. Apparently there aren’t that many “not too bridal, kitten-heeled (because I fall over in anything too high but I’m so short that I need some sort of heel next to Mr E), vintage-esque and still unique” shoes out there. Who knew?
Then, I found whichgoose. Now, you may have already seen her gorgeous hair vines and flowers floating around countless wedding blogs, but did you know she snazzies up vintage shoes with her own embellishments as well?
Here are some examples from her shop:
Exciting, right? Each pair of decorated shoes is one-of-a-kind, but very affordable (prices range around the USD$40 mark). Some of them have a few small scuffs or marks because of their vintage origins, but these are all clearly pointed out so you know about them before you buy, and personally I think they just add character!
I stalked whichgoose’s shop for weeks before a pair was finally listed in my size. And when I saw them I knew they were exactly right for me, more perfect than I could have hoped for.
Without further ado:
Eggshell by whichgoose
*silly squeal* They have lace and everything! I couldn’t have found a more perfect pair of shoes than if I had custom ordered them. So of course, I bought them on the spot.
Let’s see them on my feet, shall we?
and on my windowsill just for fun:
They fit like a glove.
(I was worried about this because I got confused with US sizes versus UK sizes and NZ sizes. But in the end Emily of whichgoose helped me figure it out.)
All in all, hunting for my wedding shoes was more drawn out and frustrating than finding my wedding dress! But at least it ended happily.
