Mrs. Husky's Picture
Mrs. Husky, Denver Age and Occupation: 26, Systems Administrator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Mechanical Engineer, recently laid off Engagement Date: August 14, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Rancho San Carlos About Me: I am planning a quirky-crafty wedding with my recently out-of-work fiancé for a (fingers crossed!) warm October afternoon. We are two self-professed nerds with an affinity for all things outdoors---be it rain, snow or shine. Recently relocated from the drizzly Northwest, we're enjoying the many sun-soaked days in the mile high city. Our day will be filled with both of our large families and friends, a self-served Cajun feast, and a Zydeco-style jazz band rocking beneath the beams of a historic red barn.
About Mrs. Husky

Mr. Husky has full reign over the wardrobe choices for himself and his groomsmen. I handed off this part of the planning to him at the very beginning, and haven’t checked in much since. So the other night, I asked him what he was thinking. His answer? Suspenders.

He’ll Be Dressed In… Suspenders? Really? : wedding denver menswear 16 1

Say wha???

Now, we are both self-professed nerds. But had it really come to this?

He explained that he wasn’t imagining Urkel-style suspenders (phew!), but more in the style of the effortlessly cool Rat Pack, or James Dean. There’s just one problem: after hours of poring over the massive Google Images database, I can’t find a single picture of any members of the Rat Pack wearing suspenders. Or James Dean. Of course, poring over photos of James Dean really wasn’t so bad…

Despite my inability to find any photos of the specific people he mentioned, I think I have an idea of what he’s going for. Maybe something along these lines?

But maybe slightly less hipster. Or maybe he could go white suspenders with a bow-tie, a la James Bond?

I’m just not entirely sold on this idea. I haven’t managed to find someone rocking the suspenders the way that the Husk envisions. Of course, that doesn’t mean he couldn’t do it.

Have you had any hesitation about your groom’s choices, for clothing or other parts of the wedding?

Daniel Craig…YUMMY! *cleans drool*

What is the…suspenders. I like the black suspenders. They look so good. The white, Daniel Criag YUMMY, I like with the jacket. No matter, your guy will rock it and your wedding sounds like tons of fun.

Oooh I love the skinny suspenders in the top photo (after Urkel, lol) I actually think it’s a really cool look. It seems that guys can actually be pretty set in their ways as far as what they want to wear and I think it’s cool to let him decide, so that he feels good, with maybe just a veto if you absolutely hate it? I’m sure you’ll be happy no matter what he’s wearing.

(Though personally, I could never marry a groom in a kilt. Probably!)

Mr. Pencils rocked some suspenders, I remember because I loved the pic of Mrs. P snapping them!

I think it’s cool that he’s actually thought about this and come up with something different. While I understand the hesitation, I think if he and his groomsmen are happy, let them run with it!

I’m not usually much of a control freak, but for the wedding I want most of it my way. Confession: I did tell my groom what he and the groomsmen are wearing- black tuxes with black bowties and cumberbunds. I like classic- you can’t go wrong. Suspenders ARE classic though, and even if there aren’t photos of the Rat Pack/James Dean sporting them, I know the look he means. I’m just glad my guy only wants to pick the DJ, because I want free reign over the rest :)

oh, suspenders are so classy! i think the thing that really sets the bond photo apart (aside from bond, that is) is the bow tie rather than tie - it ratchets it up into “evening wear” instead of hipster.

i’m a traditionalist, so i would highly encourage going for real “braces” with the button-holes, not the clip-on kind - to me, that really makes a difference.

(oh, and remember - belt *or* suspenders, but not both! i think that bit of fashion advice has been lost as suspenders stopped being used for function =)

I LOVE suspenders!! A childhood friend of mine wore them to my wedding and it honestly made my night. He looked awesome and totally pulled it off. I say go for it, Mr. Husky!!

my husband had full reign over what the men wore too and, in fact, wouldn’t tell me ANYTHING about what they were going to wear!!

I gave him a few ideas of what I’d LOVE such as “spats” for his shoes, tails on his coat and a bow tie…which is exactly how he ended up dressing! In fact, he went all ivory (my dress was ivory) for his bowtie, pocket flap and suspenders…yup he wore suspenders too - and he looked fabulous! :)

Those photos (minus Urkel) make suspenders look pretty badass!

My fiance initially suggested he wear the shorts that he bikes and hikes in for our engagement pictures. I didn’t even have words for him.

The hubs was totally set on suspenders for our wedding, and I’m SO glad I “let” him go for it! The guys looked AWESOME and got tons of compliments (and they had oh so much fun wearing them, it seemed.) They can totally go with suspenders without being too “hipster!”

I love your post! It totally made me think to my wedding day and smile. Yes, my husband had a few ideas one of which was an old fashioned car to take us from the church to our reception. Great idea, super cute, but no air conditioning. For fear of turning into a sweaty, smelly bride, I had to veto. The suspenders could be cute, assuming all the groomsmen are in GREAT shape, with not even what could be mistaken as a belly. Good luck!
