What’s Your Constellation?

July 21st, 2010 @ 5:48 pm by Mrs. Lobster

Mr. Lobster and I had our second pre-marital session with Father Mark. To prepare for this session, Father Mark gave us some homework — to construct a genogram:

What's Your Constellation? : wedding brooklyn relationships Geno011 geno01

Example Genogram

A genogram is a family tree with emotional, relationship, and health details. In our session, we used it as a tool to learn more about where each of us was coming from - our background being the foundation of how we would interact with each other as a couple.

For example, a scraggly line between two great aunts means a “conflictual relationship”, which may impact how you react when you and your sister argue. Maybe you become more sensitive to arguing because it might lead to the end of a relationship and so you avoid arguments with your significant other.

It was interesting to hear some of Father Mark’s insights into our relationship and where he foresaw future arguments based on our families’ histories. The biggest lesson was to remember to think about this genogram or our family “constellation” when it feels like we’re talking past each other and not understanding one another. We might want the same thing, just explaining it totally differently because we are part of two different constellations of family.

Have you tried to gain insight on how you communicate with your S.O.? What have you found?

Very cool!! I’m a clinical social worker, so I learned all about genograms in grad school… Sounds like it was helpful in analyzing your relationship and family patterns… FI and I will have to try it!

@MCC919: Ack! I thought the same thing, and immediately had panicky flashbacks to grad school! Ha ha. It really is a useful tool, though. Very interesting that your officiant used it in your premarital counseling.

ohh. this is really interesting. I’ve seen something a little similar, i think it was called an emotional road map or something. but definitely a good concept!

What a great idea! I think my FI and I should do this, especially since our parents are vastly different ages - a lot of “who takes care of who” issues to work out with the siblings!

this is a really good idea, although a bit scary to put that out there. guess that’s the point.

This is quite a good idea - never seen it before! I think some couples would feel a bit uncomfortable with it though.

This is fascinating! I would have never thought about doing this, but it makes a lot of sense. It didn’t take long to realize that Mr. Socks and I were raised very differently, and sometimes it takes a long time to accept those differences because we came from different family world-views. I might try this!

My pastor has told everyone in our church to do this just to be more self aware. I think it’s a great tool to start a conversation with your signifiant other about your family and the issues it has.
