Mrs. Knitting, Toronto Age and Occupation: 24, Student Recruitment Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Neuroscience PhD Candidate Engagement Date: October 2009 Wedding Date: December 2010 Venue: University of Toronto Faculty Club About Me: I'm a pearl wearing, etiquette book reading Toronto girl who loves cooking and baking, museums, charm bracelets, and collecting books on Jackie Kennedy (a lot). I've been known to spend Sunday mornings at the antique market, Wednesday evenings at sister sushi dinners, and any bit of spare time reading. After six and a half years of many late night walks, watching DVDs together in bed, travelling to places like New York, and Tobermory, doing Sudokus together on the couch, lots of Indian food, the occasional yoga class, moving in together and so much more, Mr. Knitting and I are planning a cozy Christmasy (it's a word!), vintage wedding in Toronto complete with many DIY projects (eek!) and lots of help from our amazing group of family and friends.

Getting Fit: My Passport

July 22nd, 2010 @ 5:33 pm by Mrs. Knitting

Like many of you I’m using my wedding as motivation to get into fantastic shape and I’m going to share with you how I plan to do this. In general I eat pretty well (mostly plant based food) and I have a relatively active lifestyle since I walk everywhere (yay for downtown Toronto) and occasionally make it to the gym before work in the mornings. However, I do have some plans to kick this up a notch leading up to the wedding.

One of the ways I plan to do this involves my passport.

No, not that kind of passport. This kind:

It’s a Passport to Prana. How it works is you buy the appropriate card for your city for $30, activate it online, and then you’re entitled to a free yoga class at each of the 30+ participating studios.

I’m pretty excited about my passport because I love yoga, but can’t do it as much as I would like to because of the cost. Yoga isn’t cheap. On occasion I’ll do some yoga in my living room, but I can never stay motivated to do an hour and a half at a time unless I’m in a class.

Why do I love yoga so much? Lots of reasons, but here are some of the main ones:

  1. It helps me improve my strength. I’m pretty flexible, but not nearly as strong as I would like, especially in my upper body. Yoga has really improved that for me.
  2. It helps me relax. I suspect this will be very useful in the upcoming 5 months.
  3. Mr. Knitting loves yoga too, so we have a great time going to our yoga classes together. It’s nice to have an activity we both love as in general we have pretty separate interests. No, I don’t like mountain climbing or talking about neuroscience! Here we both are with our passports.

So that’s one of the ways I’m planning to get into fantastic shape over the next few months. I’ve also decided that after we use up our passports I’m going to splurge on a 20 class pass at my favourite yoga studio The Yoga Sanctuary. I’m justifying the cost as a wedding treat for me!

What’s your favourite workout? Are you kicking things up a notch pre-wedding?

Jealous! I’m hoping to sign up for a few classes soon, hopefully I can find some. At least there’s always Fit TV!

I won’t be doing this as pre-wedding prep (P90X anyone?), but I do plan to start yoga for my next pregnancy. I know it’ll be REALLY helpful postpartum!

I tried yoga once - holy cow! It was hard! Ultimately I felt that I should work on cardio and lifting to lose weight and tone up. Ive lost over 20 pounds! This program sounds great though!

The Passport to Prana sounds amazing! I wish we had that in LA! My favorite workout is yoga, I need to get back into doing it at least twice a week! I’m starting a pilates program next week, hopefully it will help kick my butt in gear!
