Mrs. Thimble, NYC/Philadelphia Age and Occupation: 26, Actress & Costume Designer (+ day job) Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Lawyer & Techie Wiz Engagement Date: August 22, 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: The Pearl S. Buck House About Me: I’m an easily inspired over-thinker delighted with the process of designing, building, directing and {dare I say} co-starring in the early-autumn affair I’ve been dreaming up. I’m a sucker for trendied-up comfort foods and old family anecdotes; I have an affinity for adjectives, alliteration, eyelet and earl grey; and I live for quality time with family and friends. I never guessed I’d marry my “high school sweetheart", but when it turned out to be my funny, techie, loyal Mr. Thimble I was committed for life. Making Tough Choices

July 22nd, 2010 @ 11:43 am by Mrs. Thimble

I’m not very exacting. I’m an eyeball-it kind of gal, a how much do you think this weighs, a these two shades of yellow can work together, good enough kinda gal. So you can imagine, I’m not very good at sticking to our budget. My parents told me what they can pitch in and we’re staying in those boundaries, but there are a lot of extras on the peripheral budget that I can’t quite see or keep track of. But I’m trying to get better! Today, I made a tough choice.

This intricate wedding band that complements my e-ring:

Making Tough Choices : wedding philadelphia rings 462et M 462ET_m
Tacori 462ET

Elegant with a timeless heirloom quality… All this craftsmanship is concentrated in a dainty band that measures about 1.5-2mm wide. I didn’t really love any other band on my hand or with my engagement ring… but I felt guilty wanting such a glam designer ring! I mean Mr. Thimble was okay with it, and after I confessed that simpler ones weren’t really doing it for me he said we should just get it… and I was pretty giddy about it…

Versus beautiful heartfelt videography:

Well Spun Wedding Films

And then I stumbled upon Well Spun Weddings on the Weddingbee boards. I had completely nixed the idea of professional videography for our wedding. Every time a beautiful video in the blogosphere moved me to joyful tears and made me want to hire the filmmaker on the spot, I’d click over to their website and find prices starting in the 6K range. (I know, I mention how much things cost a lot. But my “eyeball the budget” methodology sees 6K as tooo biiig.) I was scared away and never fully researched my options. Then 82 days before our wedding I found Well Spun and checked out their ala carte price list and thought, Hey! We were going to spend close to 2K on that ring… could we spend it on this instead?

My original video plan was to hand my friends some Flip Vids and tell them to get as much as the could and DIY edit. I was curious and excited to see what we could come up with, but also wary that I’d forget about this plan and lose video all together- and I didn’t really want to make my friends work when they could be celebrating. But then again… on the other hand… my friends are TV-film and theater folk who would do a great job…!

See the over-thinking in action?

The only thing these two items have in common is the similar cost, which makes for an apples to oranges comparison.

I asked my mom her opinion, and she likened it to a recent anecdote about her friends: C and G were coming up on their 20th anniversary (or so…) and C had a choice of a diamond anniversary band, or a romantic trip to Paris with G, a destination she has always wanted to visit. My mom voted for Paris, I voted for Paris, C and D chose Paris!! I mean, for me it was a no-brainer.

Translate to: Mr. Thimble can always gift me with a diamond band later. ;) But we only have one chance to capture our wedding in HD. We chose videography!! A new vendor, completely on a whim, and it feels sooo goood!! (Barring any competition for our date of course. There was one other bride who had inquired and it was 1st come 1st served to complete the online contract and deposit…)

But don’t worry! I have a plan B forming in my mind grapes for a beautiful sentimental wedding band. And another layer to my over-thinking tendencies, so stay tuned.

In what ways have you prioritized wedding costs? How did you decide which elements are more important? And, which would you have chosen: dream ring or dream videography?

Tough one. My mom’s advice was to put $ into things that will last post-wedding. Since both the ring and the videos will last post-wedding, I guess it’s ultimately what’s more important to you.

BTW, I ordered the same tacori band!

I think you made the right choice - the video is something you will cherish forever, but will never have another chance to capture. I couldn’t swing videography in my budget, and your fear is exactly what happened to us - in the craziness of the wedding day, I completely forgot to enact my video camera plan. We do have a very shaky video of parts of the ceremony, but thats it…its my only regret of our wedding day.

FI works in video–not wedding stuff, but if you find a good place that is affordable and does quality work, HD is definitely worth the price. I never got the appeal of HD…then saw it on a big screen…yea total convert now.
I think you made the right decision!

I was having a hard time choosing where to spend less and the ring was one of them, thinking we could certainly buy an anniversary band or something similar later. And video will be so fun to watch when you’re 55 and your daughter gets married!

I have a Tacori engagement ring that I adore, but I couldn’t fit it into my budget to get a Tacori band (that exact one you were planning to buy, actually!). I was pretty bummed about it, but then I stumbed upon this $250 beauty from Kay’s Jewelers! It’s somewhat similar to the Tacori, and it’s definitely small and dainty. And I think it looks fabulous with my e-ring. Take a look:

The only downfall is that it is white gold, and my e-ring is platinum, but platinum is so dang expensive! It would have cost THOUSANDS to order the same ring in platinum, so I said, screw it. Ha. And I also hinted for a second band, since they are sooo affordable!! :)

this is a tough question for me, because Tacori is my dream ring designer, I drooled over their pieces for months and we even went and tried some on. Sadly, they are not budget friendly.

I guess if I really had to make a choice like this, I would go for the memories, or the experience rather than a ring on my hand.

I think you made a great choice. You can always buy a wedding band later on down the road, but a wedding video? you only get one shot at it, there’s no do overs. I would have picked the same thing. Can’t wait to see how it comes out :)

I had the same sort of dilemma. I have a Tacori e-ring and no other band was going to do it justice (to me) than the Tacori band….but it would have meant giving up budget in photography or honeymoon. SO…. We’ll get my band next year or the year after as an anniversary gift. I think you are making a great choice. We love having our pictures and videos of a day we spent SO long planning :)

This is tough. My husband to be actually is a videographer so we are feeling very stuck in that department since he obviously can’t film our own wedding! We will see what happens…

OMG I want that ring! I have a Tacori engagement ring and that band would go awesome with it…I am on the 5 year anniversary plan it seems. :)
That being said, the videography is probably the best choice!

I like your logic. Forgo the things that can easily be ungraded later for things that cannot be replicated (i.e. rings for photography; nice wedding album now for nicer honeymoon).

Haha, mind grapes! “I have to go clear my thoughtsicles.” Love 30 Rock!

We’re doing raw footage for videography because I couldn’t justify spending as much as the fancy packages cost. So we’ll get the footage completely unedited, and we’ll hang onto it for a few years til we have some extra spending money, and get it edited into something pretty for an anniversary or something. Good choice!

I think your decision makes perfect sense; choose something you can only have now over something you can have later! Although I would have chosen a lot of things over a video, personally, just because I’ve heard so many people say they’ve only watched their video a couple times, and I feel like I’d be the same way.

That’s a tough one, but like you I’d also choose videography because of the fact that you can get your beautiful wedding band at a later date.

Okay first off we have the SAME engagement ring and this band was the SAME band I wanted too! It just looks so darn good but with the $1800 price tag I just couldn’t do it even though my FI said I could… I ended up getting a similar design (but non designer) with more carats and just a little bit more width for 1/2 the price. Keep looking if you haven’t found the perfect one yet.
