Mrs. Locket, Ithaca, NY Age and Occupation: 25, Research Technician Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, former Banker hoping to become an Officer of the Law Engagement Date: June 15, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Heron Hill Winery About Me: I am a little bit of everything all rolled into one: A girly gal with rough edges---I love to get dolled up just as much as I enjoy throwing on some sneaks to toss a ball with Mr. Locket. My love for crafting and creating is quite apparent and I've been referred to as a Wonder Woman/Martha Stewart/Stepford Wife hybrid (yup, I'll take that as a compliment). I adore sewing, photography, sculpture, good eats (mmm tapas), baking, snugging and oh, pretty much everything in between (there's not much I dislike). I am super excited to be planning our vineyard wedding and couldn't be happier to be marrying Mr. Locket. We are a quirky, fun-loving couple residing in our college town with our two pups Maple and Molly. We love to go on hikes, visit our local dog park and to bask in the beauty of many of the local falls and gorges. We are an indecisive pair, but together we somehow manage to make up our minds (it's the easy stuff that's tricky).

Dressing My Girlies…

July 22nd, 2010 @ 4:56 pm by Mrs. Locket

… and keeping everyone happy. When it came to choosing their bridesmaids’ dresses I gave my girls free rein with slight limitations. I didn’t want them to feel that they didn’t have a choice, but I didn’t want the styles to be all over the place and in mixed colors.

Cue bad example:

In my initial BM dress shopping with MOH Amy, we found a style she liked in the Bill Levkoff collection. A few days later lil’ sis tried on the same dress and hated it… this is what really cemented the idea of having different dresses into my brain.

I decided to let the girls choose whatever dresses they wanted with the limitation that it had to be from the Bill Levkoff line and it had to come in chiffon (to keep the colors the same). I provided them with the possibilities and they were left with the final decision (which is a good thing for someone as indecisive as I am).

And, if you recall, in my last bridesmaids’ dress post, I went shopping with my sissy and we found something she liked, which was very different from what Amy liked. At the time I was still waiting to hear back from my third girl, Catie, but I already knew she would like something else, too.

Well, we’ve finally come to a decision (at least for now). Amy will wear the Bill Levkoff style #537 (the long one); sis Hannah will wear style #385 (the one on the left); and BM Catie will wear style #523 (the asymmetrical one).

Here’s my quick (I mean crappy) Photoshopped-attempt at putting them all together in the same color:

Dressing My Girlies… : wedding bridesmaid dress ithaca 22 2

My lack of expert photo editing skills has left the color a bit off. To give you a better idea of what they should look like, here’s a picture of my sister in the plum:

Dressing My Girlies… : wedding bridesmaid dress ithaca 32 3

I admit I was a little worried that the differing styles might not work and could look crazy in the pictures.

But, seeing them all together has put me at ease. I think they work well with each other and provide a nice transition to one another. Not to mention the fact that they showcase each of the girls personalities, which means they will each feel happy and comfy in them (less whining and complaining to deal with=happy bride=great photos).

Another plus is that mismatched dresses are becoming a very popular option for today’s bridesmaids.

And, for your viewing pleasure, here are a few more examples of mixed length/style bridesmaid dresses:

I love that these examples show two short lengths with one long (the route we are going towards). It shows that what we have is going will work.

How do you plan to dress your ladies? Are you letting them have some say in what they wear?

I wish that the my friend had let us choose length! She told us fabric, color and David Bridal and they all had to be long…. I would have preferred to wear short, but being the good bridesmaid, I haven’t said a peep, her day, her way! I had my bridesmaids pick out short black dresses, I don’t care what material, what designer, or anything. They can definitely wear them again, and they can choose from their own closets if they like! I figured that would be the easiest, most cost efficient solution and made my colors black, white and green :-) I love the dresses you have though and fully support the different lengths!

I let my girls pick their own dresses. My MOH is wearing a short dress and my BM is wearing a long dress! I fretted about the difference for about ten seconds and then came to same conclusion you did: they each love their dress and happy bridesmaids make for less complaining which makes a happier ME!

I am debating this too! They all have such different tastes - it will be hard to agree on a material much less a style. But I really like the color you picked and I think the pics will be fine :)

I am wanting my brides-babes to pick out their own dresses too - I had a question for you? Where did you get the picture of the turquoise blue dresses ? I am trying to find a mix of dresses in that color. Any help will be appreciated!

I’m going your route, I think - Give them brand, color, and fabric and they choose what they like. As long as they’re smiling, I’m happy! They’ll look beautiful as long as they’re content!

I picked a color and length (although I know they would have all picked short anyway), and the rest is up to them.

I’ve given them free reigns for everything except color and length. They’re wearing DB Pool with them knee length.

I’m letting my bridesmaid’s choose their style and length, although not the colour. The problem I’m running into now though, is that one of my BM’s has hated every dress and is now refusing to wear one! She wants to wear a pants outfit instead. I can handle different lengths of dresses, but not sure what I think of pants. A lot of the designers don’t even make anything with pants… Any suggestions?

We were able to find a collection of dresses (4 in total) that are identical from the waist down but have entirely different tops. Each of my 4 girls laid claim to the dress that they wanted and I have ended up with perfectly coordinated dresses that suit their individual needs.
I have two very skinny bridesmaids - one of which is wearing a Jackie O inspired boatneck and the other a similar style with a keyhole. My young average sized bridesmaid is wearing the strapless number. And my gorgeously curvy plus sized bridesmaid is wearing a tank style dress that is perfectly flattering to her.
I think the mismatched dresses is a GREAT way to make everyone happy and ensure that everyone looks their best.

I would have loved to let my bridesmaids pick their own dresses, but they didn’t want to. They thought it would be easier if I did it. And with my previous personal BM experience, it is easy to be told what to wear. So my BMs are in the same dress, and they seem reasonably happy.

My bridesmaids are picking their own dresses too. I kind of asked them to choose a particular color (plum/eggplant) and a shorter length. I think eventually they will just all go with dresses from David’s Bridal anyway though just because it’s easier :)

Very nice! My bridesmaids are all over the place. At least you have a very cohesive theme/color/fabric. It will look great.

@kbell724: I just did a search…they are from alfred angelo’s knit collection

@Sanchia: hmm pants? I don’t know..the only thing I can think is maybe the same designer would have something in the MOB collection? Pants suits aren’t very common for BMs..Goodluck!

I have two MOH’s (my two sisters) and they are wearing long dresses while the other 5 BM’s wear short ones. They are all the same color but each one is a different design. I think it is going to look awesome!
