About Mrs. Penguin

I recently attended my girlfriend Lauren’s bridal shower in Fresno where good times were had by all. Cristina, the Maid of Honor, had one game that I found particularly genius that I had to share with the hive! But before we get to that, check out the cake that Cristina made at home for the shower. It was incredible!!!

… Not to mention the hydrangea centerpieces, with hydrangeas cut from her mom’s garden!

Anyway, so this brilliant game was as follows:

Lauren the bride was asked to purchase her shower thank you notes in advance, and bring the envelopes to the shower. While the guests were mingling, we all asked that each guest fill out their names and mailing addresses on the envelopes, for some prize drawings later.

While Lauren was opening her shower gifts, her MOH periodically drew an envelope and gave a gift to whomever she drew from the pile.

And, at the end of the shower, a complete stack of envelopes was handed to the bride, all completely addressed!!! It probably saved her an hour or two of envelope addressing, and took virtually no effort at all for us guests! :)

On a slightly related note, I threw my favorite pair of black pumps into my car’s trunk for the weekend and never ended up wearing them, so in the trunk they stayed during my trip to Fresno. If you didn’t know, Fresno is hot in the summer. Like, fry-an-egg-on-the-sidewalk-hot.

And the glue on my shoes melted. For reals, Fresno? For reals? :)

Have you witnessed any brilliant shower games lately? What were they?

I am from Hanford and totally appreciate your comments about the H-O-T central valley! Everyone says “but it’s a DRY heat” but really, 110+ degrees is ridiculous no matter what!

I’ve seen this game done before, and I am not a fan. I think asking guests to address their own thank-you note is a little rude. To each their own though…I do think it’s nice that your friend had prize drawings with the envelopes.

I think this is a brilliant idea, adressing envelopes gives me stress bc I always worry about spelling names wrong or messing up someone’s address…I also cannot BELIEVE she made that cake, it’s gorgeous!!

I also have to say I am not a fan of having guests address their own thank-yous. I have heard of this being done before and although it’s a time-saver, I am a big etiquette stickler and for me this type of thing would be a no-no. Looks like a lovely shower–the cake and the centerpieces are just beautiful!!! Talented friends, for sure! :)

Yes, I too have to disagree … I do note care for that method of addressing envelopes. I think it is impersonal. My cousins have done it at every shower they’ve had and we of course participate but I think that some things are better left to etiquette.

I agree that the centerpieces are amazing though.

My favorite shower game of all time is Banana Bride. Guest divide up into teams of 3 or so, and each team is issued a banana. The teams have to dress the bananas like brides using only the crap in their purses. The last time I played this game, receipts featured heavily as attire, and our Banana Bride had a candy wrapper face veil. So fun.

wow that cake is amazing!!! holy cakeroni. i think the shower game was thoughtful for the bride, especially with the little gifts for guests whose names were drawn. it would have been different if they were asked to write their own thank you note: “mrs. pug you are the most WONDERFUL person EVER”. i guess it depends on the crowd that’s invited.

I personally think the envelope part is a fantastic idea! Sometimes I think etiquette needs to take a hike in some things because it’s so stuffy and old in areas but this is just a fun way to help out the bride who has enough on her plate. :)

Oh and that cake is fantastic! I’d love to have hydrangeas in my backyard that looked like that. And your shoe, holy crap.

The centerpieces and cake look good enough for the wedding itself!

Holy crap! I cannot believe your shoe melted! I can sympathize with you on the heat. One time a friend here in AZ left a bottle of grape juice in her trunk after a shopping trip, it was wine within a week. Gross!

I like the idea of having the guests address their envelopes. My sister suggested it for my shower, and I agreed it was a great idea, and then I forgot the envelopes. So…but it would have been great! And damn that cake!!

I definitely don’t like the idea of having guests address their own envelopes. I know it’s a pain to do it yourself, but all these guests came and brought gifts, and really, they shouldn’t be participating in the process of thanking themselves.

But otherwise, that shower looks lovely! I love the cake!

My sister/MOH didn’t have the guests address the envelopes, but the week after the shower, she sent me a package with envelopes she had addressed for me, plus the pictures of me with each guest that she’d taken so that I could include the photo in the thank you note. THAT was awesome.
