I make sure I put my art degree to good use by screen printing, craft knife cutting, and a whole lotta graphic design. We're having a big-time party on a small-time budget, and I promise to show you a boot-scootin', barbecue-eatin', finger-lickin' good time! Creating a Soundtrack

July 22nd, 2010 @ 10:17 am by Mrs. Sand Dollar

I’m gonna be honest right now, and please don’t hate me, but I’m totally not obsessed with music. I don’t spend hours crafting thoughtful playlists. I’m a fan of cliché songs. I do favor indie artists like Lenka and Ingrid Michaelson, but honestly, I wasn’t stressing on what we would be playing at the wedding. Mr. SD is more that person, so I left it up to him, save for the entrance song. It speaks to my soul.

Have you ever heard Little Big Town’s Bring It On Home? If not, you need to check it out here. Here’s a snippet:

You know I know you like the back of my hand,
don’t you know I’m gonna do all that I can right here? Yes I am.
Take your worries and just drop them at the door.
Baby leave it all behind.

When your long day is over,
and you can barely drag your feet,
the weight of the world is on your shoulders,
I know what you need. Bring it on home to me.

It really is my favorite song.

I constantly genius it on my iTunes. I have all of Little Big Town’s music; it’s fabulous. I’m just having a friend and his wife sing with his guitar and have everyone walk down to it so we can hear the full song. I haven’t decided on a recessional, but  I’m tempted to have him break into the chorus of their new single, Little White Church. ;)

For our first dance, Mr. SD chose She’s Like Texas by Josh Abbot Band.

I adore this song. I was born in Nacogdoches, and we started our relationship while I lived in Dallas. It’s so spot on, and super sweet. Plus, it’s a bit on the faster side so we can bust out our secret dance moves. Yes, we’re planning a flip. Let’s see if I don’t bust my butt like I do 50% of the time. We plan on a little outdoor practice on our sand volleyball court beforehand!

For the rest of the reception music, we’re splitting time between our favorite (and soon to be crazy-famous!) band, the Midnight River Choir and an iPod playlist (the park has a loudspeaker system that they use for festivals and events, so we’re all good there). I’m still on the fence about our father/daughter dance as well. Thoughts are Johnny Cash’s Thing Called Love and maybe something vintage country. This may be a long shot, but if anybody has a classic country suggestion please let me know! And by classic I mean ’50s - ’70s. No Stealing Cinderella or Butterfly Kisses, we just ain’t sentimental folks. ;)

Anybody else having nontraditional musical selections?

We used that Little Big Town song for the parents and grandparents! We would have used it for our first dance, but my husband’s sister and her husband used it a few years before! Great choice!

We also used Keith Urban’s Only You Can Love Me This Way for our bridal party processional.

Ahh another country music loving bride :) I’m in love with Little Big Town as well! I”m a huge George Strait fan, I know it’s not 50-70s, but if you check out some of his earlier stuff it’s not as clique! There might be a good father/daughter song in there if you dig through some of his first records.

My friend and her dad danced to “That’s the Way Love Goes” by Merle Haggard if you want to go classic.

LOL Miss Sand Dollar, I’m with you on not being too big on music and spending hours each week buying music and making playlists and such :)

George Jones or if you like flatpicking Doc Watson too. Love your music choices! It will make a great reception.

My husband loves that song “She’s like Texas”. What a great choice! And I went to college in Nacogdoches also so that part in the song holds a special place in my heart too.

I love that there is so much country music at your wedding! Like a PP, I also love George Strait, and my dad and I danced to Amarillo by Morning, since we would always listen to it together in the car when I was growing up.

I’d never heard “She’s like Texas” until today, but it gives me chills imagining it for a first dance for the two of you! I love country fiddle.

finally a bee who is at the same level on music as me! i hope my DJ can anticipate what i would want, cause I am so so clueless.

A suggestion for you!!!! Use pandora to find a father daughter dance song. Just type in an artist or song from the 50-60 country era that you want and then listen to the songs that pandora comes up with for you!

Love Little Big Town! Great idea about using the song Bring it On Home, might have to steal! I also like Keith Urban’s Making Memories Of Us.

And I love the new song Little White Church! I mean how can you not with those lyrics:

You can’t ride this gravy train,
anymore,anyway
There’s a price for keeping me
I might be cheap, but I ain’t free
Now more calling me baby
No more loving like crazy

Take me down to the little white church.
