Mrs. Hot Wings's Picture
Mrs. Hot Wings, Chicago/San Diego Age and Occupation: 28, Professor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Instructor Engagement Date: December 20, 2008 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Ocean View Villas/Jasmine Seafood Restaurant About Me: I am a psychology grad student living in Chicago and planning my wedding to a fellow psych grad student. I am a Sunny So-Cal bred gal who trudged across the country to follow her love of psychology and ended up finding a partner in the process. I am overly passionate about anything I involve myself with. I am an activist, a foodie, a reality TV watching junkie, an over-analyzer, a photography obsesser, and am utterly cheesy to the core. This is a story of what happens when a boy and a girl meet, fall in love over academic dorkiness, and a shared love for life. We (mostly I) are planning our semi-destination wedding in my hometown of San Diego. We are excited to bring our families and friends together from across our lifespans to celebrate our future in a grand 400+ person culturally blended affair!
About Mrs. Hot Wings

Where did all the freaking time go? The Hot Wings are just under 30 days until the big Wedding Soiree! EEK! What the heck happened? We had a long 22 month engagement. I should be done with all this planning, right? Nope. The to-do list went insane once we hit the 1 month mark. What the to-do list did not prepare me for was the irrational fears and horrid dreams that would start with 1 month to go.

Here’s the most irrational of them all.

I have a facial feature called the gummy smile. Ever heard of it? If you haven’t, you have probably seen it and have not known what to call it or that it even needed to be labeled.

Having a gummy smile means that you can see my gums when I smile. In the picture above, you can see the picture on the left is of a gummy smile. The picture on the right is a non-gummy smile. Typically, it’s something you’re born with. In my case, I’ve had it my whole life. A lot of people in my family have it.

You can’t really tell I have a gummy smile in a lot of my photos if I’m “fake smiling”. In other words, you tell me to smile and I put on a smile. It’s not natural. I’m not necessarily happy or laughing.

Me and … guess who (find out here) at our Bachelorette Party

The “problem”, if you could call it that, is when I start getting happy.

Yup, that’s Miss Pashmina and me in college about to head out to a David Bowie concert.

The happier I get, the more gummy my smile/laugh gets.

Over the years, I developed a couple solutions. In high school, I liked to use a lipstick that was about the same color as my gums.

I would try covering my mouth like Mr. Hot Wings did here, but I pretty much didn’t like that technique. So I just started making an effort to allow myself to go open mouthed.

For some this may not seem like a big deal. But to you I ask, do you really know what the deal is? People have told me all my life that I would be so much prettier if I didn’t have a gummy smile. Punks! Look, we all have our “it” thing that bugs the heck out of us. Some of us deal with weight issues, others don’t like their nose, or their forehead. Name a body part and we could probably have discussions all day long.

Among women, it’s pretty normal right? There are many ways to deal with things that bother us on our wedding days. You want longer lashes you say? Fakies to the rescue. You want bigger boobs? There are push up bras galore. Extensions, hair coloring, facials, tanning, Spanx, and on and on the list goes.

What makes the thinking about my gummy smile irrational is that there’s really nothing I can do about it aside from surgery. So, what’s a bride-to-be to do?

Here’s my answer. We’ve all heard and read that it’s important to let the little things go on your wedding day so you can enjoy it for what it is. I’m here to remind all of us (me included) that the “letting go” must start a lot earlier than we have been told. We need to let go of the imperfections that we obsess over. Sure, I look pretty nice in that first “fake smile” picture. But it doesn’t convey the same emotions and joy that all the other pictures convey. If I want the photojournalistic photos that we paid the big bucks for, then I must come to terms with my real smile and laugh. The real me that comes out when I’m happy and joyful. And don’t even get me started on the ugly-cry face that’s bound to come out on my wedding day. It’s ugly, yes. But it’s real, and it is what happens. Let. It. Go. Now. Don’t wait until later, friends. Let your sanity have some peace of mind that you are a beautiful bride. What you can “enhance”, you will. What you cannot will just be. I dare someone to tell me Mr. Hot Wings and I don’t look totally adorable in those last 2 pictures, despite my gummy laugh.

How are you dealing with your irrational wedding fears?

I never would have noticed if you hadn’t pointed it out. I have to agree with your conclusion, let it go.

Whoa, I would never have noticed a think other than that you have a very pretty smile if I hadn’t read this! I’m sure it bothers you but I honestly think it’s not at all noticeable, I’m sorry people have been rude about it! Either way, you’re gorgeous no matter how you smile!

You look perfect smiling or not smiling. We all have something that we hate. I’m not a big girl but my “boob fat” bothers the heck out of me!! I never noticed it until trying on wedding dresses. Now I’m obsessed with it and check out every bride and famous person on TV. I know there is nothing I can do about it!! This is who I am and I have someone that loves me! I guess when I look at it like that it doesn’t bother me as much…but it still bothers me!

I also have a “gummy” smile. I learned to accept mine early on, though. At least my smile stands out among all the perfectly teeth-filled grins. :-D

I definitely agree with letting it go and showing your true happy smile on your wedding day.

Friend, I am hear to tell you that you are just gorgeous, regardless of a gummy smile or not. Truly. You are beautiful and I am glad you are reminding yourself to let it go in favor of showing real, true, giddy, happy emotion on your wedding day…because you know what? I love those gummy smile pictures you’ve shown us the best out of all of them!

Seriously though. You are one hot Hot Wings! :)

lol I have it even worse. I have overcrowded teeth and one of my incisors is pretty much right on top of another tooth so it sticks out and looks like a vampire tooth! I hate it but I can’t afford to get it fixed before the wedding:(

sometimes I wish I had a “gummy smile” - mainly because of my idol, Gwen Stefani. She’s definitely got a gummy smile and I think it’s awesome!

Me too. I’d never thought about it. I just always assumed I opened my mouth a lot when I smiled and sometimes try not to. Hmm. The gummy smile maynot be as pretty, but after looking at some pictures, I realized too that I definitely look happier with the gummy smile!

I have the same problem, and I am WAY overly self conscious about it. I told my photographer about it prior to our wedding day, and she made me feel so much better about it. I totally let it go on our wedding day and I am so happy I did.

I also have a gummy smile, and I’ve always hated it. But I noticed that it didn’t bother me at all in my wedding pictures. I saw all the things that I don’t like about myself in photos, sure, but they didn’t look bad with a good photographer. ;) Who knew?

I have the same problem. I even had surgery to fix it but only fixed it for a few months and went back to my usual gummy smile. It’s my big ‘it’ thing too–whenever someone points it out, I get really irritated.

I hadn’t really thought about it for my wedding but I think it’ll bother me too. But realized I can’t do much about it….

@missvintage: @Mrs. Spaniel: Ooo… I hadn’t thought about a good photographer. What a great point.

You all are totally MAKING MY FRIDAY!!! It’s so funny how we obsess over things that no one else pays much attention to.

I think a 100% happy smile with imperfections is better than a not-so-happy smile! :) And I should know, I’ve got hiiiiideous overlapping teeth and tons of gum!

Yay! I have a gummy smile too. And you are gorgeous with or without the gums showing.

Be happy! And really next time someone says how much prettier you would be sans gums, send them to me so I can smack ‘em upside the head for you. :)
