Miss Handbag, Smyrna, DE/Jamaica Age and Occupation: 25, Administration Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Sales Engagement Date: Christmas Night 2008 Wedding Date: March 2011 Venue: Rosehall Resort, Montego Bay, Jamaica About Me: I am a Type A, emotional Italian fireball, who on a weekly basis must be brought back to reality by my level headed, calm, cool and collected fiance. We are planning an intimate, all white with hints of black, vintage inspired wedding on the old sugar aqueducts of Jamaica, with 30 of our closest friends and family flying in to witness the occasion. We are not traditional by any means and will be doing things very differently. :)
About Miss Handbag

My Vintage Dream

July 23rd, 2010 @ 1:43 pm by Miss Handbag

In case you didn’t know, I am OBSESSED with anything vintage, wedding, and DIY. I love incorporating the old with the new. I love lace dresses and vintage picture frames.

So when it came time for our theme and colors, it was a no-brainer! We are having a vintage, black and white wedding. :) And Mr. Handy is actually excited and into the wedding planning. He wants to have a say in EVERY detail and especially the food (of course!). So when it came time for where to get married, we both agreed on a destination wedding. Neither of us have been to Jamaica (I have never even been out of the country!) so we started looking into resorts in Montego Bay (mainly because it’s 10 minutes from the airport, haha). Then we came across…

My Vintage Dream : wedding jamaica venues Rosehal

The Hilton Rose Hall Resort in Montego Bay (10 minutes from the airport!!). I instantly fell in love. Why? Good question… here is our list of requirements for our wedding/resort/honeymoon…

  • WATER PARK! (Handy and I LOVE them)
  • GREAT food (obviously)
  • Plenty of activities for our guests/us to do
  • a spa!
  • swim up bar (a must!)
  • for the wedding not to feel like just a number that day (how lost of resorts treat you)

This resort has all that… and then I found this:

My Vintage Dream : wedding jamaica venues Aqueduc

pictures are from Rosehall Resort

Apparently (small history lesson) Jamaica used to be a sugar plantation back in the 1800s. Well some of the ruins are still there, and they have utilized them for weddings!! How perfect is that?! Vintage, elegant, romantic! LOVE IT!

I’m so psyched! And of course, Mr Handy loves it! I am so excited that he is so involved and as excited about all the girly details as I am (for now).

How involved is your FI in wedding planning? DW brides: were you able to find a venue that didn’t treat your wedding as “just another wedding that day”?

My good friend just got married at a sugar plantation in Barbados. They had a museum in it, it was interesting to hear about how the slavery on the plantation transitioned to a free enterprise system.

i stayed at the rosehall two years ago and there was no water park then. is it new? i definitely liked the room as i was upgraded to a walk out ocean front room. the people were very nice, food at the buffet was pretty good, but the beach is very small. where on the venue are you holding your ceremony and reception?

Love the location!

Technically we’re having a DW because it’s 2.5 hours away and it’s a whole weekend; however, the place is awful. They’ve lied about prices, booking the band, what they help with, and much more. After the wedding, I can’t wait to pan them on every site I find so that no mther bride and groom suffer from the lack of anything. (Example: it’s less than 3 weeks (I think) til the wedding and they haven’t found us another band after their coordinator said they’d book for us even after we offered to call them. No more 17 piece jazz band for us.)

OOOHH! looks beautiful! Love the ruins - very romantic and special for your guests too

I lucked out and found an amazing resort in Cabo - lucked out because their wedding planner is Ah-mazing. They only do 1 wedding per day, and actually only end up doing about 2/week according to their planner (Pueblo Bonito Sunset Rose). I probably email her 2-4x/week and she responds within an hour or two with detailed answers. Love her. She’s making me feel like she’s working just with me.

It isn’t all inclusive, so we pay extra for everything… so it’s actually really easy to get just what we want (and cheaper for our guests in the long run). We are putting together a lot of the stuff at home and shipping it to MX from MN. Laura, our planner, has been awesome in letting me know what will work and what won’t work.

I went to a wedding at Rose Hall last Memorial Day. They also went for the aquaduct option, but it rained, and they had to have the wedding by the pool (and didn’t get any money back). According to the bride, the staff was helpful, but the photographer was only so-so. And the DJ didn’t stick to her list, which upset her. The cocktail hour with steel drum band was wonderful. As a guest, everything looked beautiful.

thanks for the warning Lisa. If it rains, it will be held inside the plantation house for no extra charge.

cherrywatermelon- The water park was added the beginning of last year. It is absolutely beautiful and very fun! and of coarse the swim up bar doesnt hurt :)

Oooh, love vintage! I’m going to a vintage wedding tomorrow, it’s supposed to evoke the 20’s. I’m so excited to wear a fancy tassel dress I’d never have an excuse to otherwise. I bet all your guests will be grateful to dress up!

Wow - that looks beautiful! We picked out our DW venue before knowing how they treated you, and while they’ve risen in popularity since we’ve booked it, I think our wedding is different enough that they can’t treat us the same :)

Your venue looks lovely! The DH & I picked Aruba before even going on a site visit! We chose the Westin and they absolutely did a fantastic job! I’m glad we chose to have a DW, best wedding decision the DH & I made together!

Love it!

I have a feeling our DW in Jamaica will be “just another wedding” to the resort…but whatever, it will be special to us!

I stayed there (thats where my now husband proposed!) Let me know if you have any questionsabout the resort or montego bay… go all inclusive otherwise the food is really expensive!! Also, if you want to go downtown (which is 4 miles or something) taxis charge $25 each way WOAH! The resort itself is BEAUTIFUL. and I have additional pictures if you want to see everything.

We are getting married in Jamaica too! Although our story of getting married there is a little different than normal…my grandfather owns a villa in Montego Bay, so I have been vacationing there since I was a kid. When it was time, I took my FH there on vacation, then we took his parents there on another. Since I am from California and FH is from Massachusetts, we had some disagreements on where we should get married. We talked about it and decided we should get married in our favorite place…you guessed it JAMAICA! We are getting married at Richmond Hill Inn which is famous for its sunsets! While you are down there, make sure you go to Scotchie’s, its the best jerk chicken around! If you have any questions about Montego, feel free to ask!
