With This… Um… Ring?

July 23rd, 2010 @ 2:41 pm by Mrs. Sand Dollar

Mr. SD is in a dangerous line of work. He works with high-voltage electricity plants. They’re forbidden to wear jewelry of any kind, especially necklaces and rings, for their conductive properties. Even wood is forbidden, so there goes even that option. So, what do we do? We’ve discussed getting him a token ring he can wear when he’s not at work. If we do, it won’t exactly be an investment piece. We’re thinking something like this.

A simple Titanium band from Overstock for about 40 bucks. Or, going to James Avery and picking something out since we have a location in Waco. Maybe one of these?

Mr. SD likes simple and clean designs, and I think all of these are good options. Ideally I’d love for him to have a ring to wear around when he can. And like mine, we plan to start off cheap and upgrade a little later (around year 5).

Anybody else have a partner who can’t wear a ring the majority of the time? What are you doing?

You could do a tattoo, but some people would think it’s tacky.

Definitely get a ring. He may not work where he works forever and you’ll want it!

there are places online that sell wood rings. i’ve read that a lot of electricians love these because they aren’t metal and they look just as beautiful and unique! i don’t know if he’d be into this, but check out these places:

My boy can’t wear his at work either. We got him one at Sears for $49.99.

whoops, i just realized that you said he can’t wear wood rings. i’m just curious why that’s the case? snagging on something? i always thought they were great options for people who can’t wear jewelry otherwise.

Hubs can’t wear his ring all that often bcause of work either. It honestly doesn’t really bother me. I agree with TrailMix’s sentiment from her post about rings that I know he’s married, and he knows he married so he doesn’t need to constantly be wearing his ring to prove it. We have talked about the option of a tattoo. But I told him if he does it I would like it to be very thin so it’s not visible when he is wearing his ring. But I’ve left it up to him if he wants to do that or not.

My dad was a machinist and couldn’t wear his wedding ring ever. He kept it in his wallet(s), in his back pocket for all of his life. So he always had his ring with him.

The vows are mutual. The rings should be, too.

As mrsv2be said… a tattoo is an option. A friend of mine who’s a musician always said he’d get a tattoo wedding band whenever he got married bc a regular ring would get in the way. Future hubs and I are eventually going to get tattoo wedding bands (once I graduate and am not in a lab that deals with cell samples from HIV+ patients).

The tat could be some very simple line work that would look elegant and not too tacky. You could even draw something up yourselves…

My husband can wear his, but his is a white gold one that looks just like your last picture. It didn’t cost a lot.

The tattoo option could be a good one, unless it would be looked down upon in his line of work.

@Bride_Colleen: I didn’t even know Sears sold rings! That’s a good option.

@iggies: Wood is also an electricity conductor, hence the whole lightning to tree thing. So that’s out.

We actually just discovered porcelain rings! That may be the solution to all our problems. But I love the sentiment of @bjvl: Keeping it close by (and insulated!) is heartwarming.

My friend’s husband went this route:

I’m not particularly sure WHERE he ordered the ring, but there’s a few places other than the link above where you can investigate.

Oh, nevermind. Someone already mentioned that and you already explained.

::sigh:: Back to sleep.

I have an uncle that made rings out of pvp pipe. He just cut a piece the width of the ring and sandpapered it down smooth. It was really cheap and easy, but it still looked good!

i understand that men not having wedding rings used to be fairly common. i suppose you could take that to say something negative about expectations of fidelity,, but i suspect that it really has to do with the number of men, especially in the past, who worked in fields where jewelery would be dangerous.

my mother made my dad stop wearing his ring to work early on because she worried about it getting caught in the machinery, and of course he then lost it - hasn’t had one since i’ve known him =)

also, this conversation reminds me of the couple in “good night and good luck,” if you’ve seen it.

@mrs.sulak: That’s really inventive! Also a good alternative.

My hubby hates using any rings so for the first 2 years he never wore it. We used it for the ceremony, we got a couple of beautiful totally us tungsten rings for 100$ both and the ceremony was lovely, he does not need to wear it since i dont really care: he is married and its more than a piece of paper or a ring :) sometimes he will put it and i make an effort to notice it every time since its important for him (since he does it to “prove he likes the ring, just does not like wearing it”) :D

Have you considered a ceramic ring?

I don’t think my boyfriend will wear a ring when we get married. My father never wore a ring — in fact, a lot of the men in my neighborhood didn’t wear rings, I think it had a lot to do with the lines of work they were in. I think either of those bands would be a good choice.

I actually really like the first pic you posted! And my FH and I could never do tattoos - but if the committment is there and you both know it, who cares whether or not he has the ring on?
