Mrs. Cardigan's Picture
Mrs. Cardigan, Austin Age and Occupation: 21, Student/Soon-to-be Special Education Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 20, Student/Soon-to-be Accounting Systems Analyst Engagement Date: August 16, 2009 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Vintage Villas About Me: I'm a native Austinite who was raised as a die-hard Aggie. Luckily, I'm a pretty persuasive girl because I managed to convince my high school boyfriend (now fiance!), Mr. Cardigan, to ditch his hardcore Longhorn ways and join me up at A&M, where we currently reside with our adorable dogs, Cullen & Ranger. We're currently planning a bright, cheery wedding with a ridiculous amount of DIY projects that I can't wait to tackle! I love crafting in any form, reading, and margaritas (I think I love them the most!). Organization is what keeps me sane and I love helping others, which is probably why I ended up as an education major. It gets a little chaotic sometimes when you're planning a wedding among all of the papers, projects, finals, and certification exams, but we're having the time of our lives and we can't wait to get started on our journey as husband and wife - and we're so excited to share our wedding with the hive!
About Mrs. Cardigan

I’ve mentioned before that Mr. Cardigan and I aren’t going the traditional route when it comes to our wedding music. We knew from the beginning that we’d be skipping the traditional music, as did most of the people who know us well. In fact, one of the first things a friend of mine said to me upon finding out I was engaged was, “Oh, please tell me you’re not playing Canon in D!”

Our Non-Traditional Ceremony Music : wedding austin music 517vnrp

Now, that’s not to say that there’s anything wrong with the traditional ceremony music.

It’s absolutely beautiful, and I love that anytime you hear those songs, you immediately think “wedding”. However, they’re just not us. Mr. Cardigan and I both love music, and we both feel that it’s an extremely personal thing – we want that to be reflected in the music that we select for our ceremony!

We have so many songs that are special to us, and we really wanted to be able to include them in the ceremony without getting too non-traditional. That is, we wanted the songs to still at least be just instrumentals. That’s where Vitamin String Quartet comes in. Oh, how I love VSQ! If for some crazy reason you’ve never heard of them, they’re an amazing quartet that covers mainstream songs and turns them into incredible instrumentals that make my heart happy. We plan to give our DJ a list of VSQ songs to play as the guests are coming in and getting seated, partially because we love them, and partially because I think it would be so much fun to sit there and try to figure out what each song is! Because I’m a dork like that.

Anyways, as far as the ceremony itself, most of our songs will come from the same artist (but performed by VSQ, of course): Dashboard Confessional.

Swoon!

Dashboard is hands down Mr. C’s and my favorite band ever. Mr. Cardigan first started listening to Dashboard Confessional through me, as I was obsessed with them in high school (and still am), and he wanted to impress me. Soon, he found that he loved them too, and we bonded over their music, a lot. So when it came time to decide on music for our ceremony, it seemed only natural that we would want to use Dashboard. So, as my bridesmaids walk down the aisle, this incredibly gorgeous song will be playing:

If you’ve never heard the original version of that song, you need to hear it! (Here, let me Google it for you)

For the song that will play as I walk down the aisle, there was never a second of doubt in either of our minds that it would be “Hands Down” by Dashboard Confessional. This song is so incredibly special to Mr. Cardigan and I, and we have so many memories tied to it. In fact, one of my favorite memories of Mr. C and I in high school was when I was on a media fast for a Bible study I was doing and couldn’t listen to the radio. We were in the car for a pretty long drive, and we randomly went into an a capella rendition of Hands Down – screaming at the top of our lungs with the windows rolled down. I know, I know, that was probably technically cheating on my media fast, but it was a really special moment, and one that I still think of and smile. Mr. Cardigan also has this song set as the ring tone for whenever I call him!

So, when the bridesmaids make it up to their place at the altar, the doors at the back of the room will open, and this song will begin playing. (I get chills just thinking about it!)

I wonder if our guests would mind if once I make it up to the altar, we just chill for a minute and let the song finish. It feels wrong to stop playing a song so beautiful. :)

And then, the recessional is where we have come to a standstill. There are SO MANY incredibly fun songs that we could play for the recessional, and it’s so hard to pick one! We’ve finally narrowed it down to three, and I’d love the hive’s opinion on which one we should use!

The choices are:

1) Where You Lead (I like the Faith Hill cover of Carol King’s original) – I’ll be honest: we thought of this song primarily because it’s the theme song to Gilmore Girls. I got Mr. C addicted to that show a few years back, and went on a crazy Gilmore Girls bender in which we watched at least two (usually more like 4) episodes every day until he had seen all 7 seasons. Plus, the lyrics of the song are just so perfect!

2) All I Want is You (Barry Louis Polisar) – I love, love, love this song and the lyrics are just so sweet! I think it would be really special surprise for my dad if we used this song, because he is a huge fan of bluegrass music and I am usually not. We’ve always teased one another about our tastes in music, and I think he would be pleasantly surprised to hear such a bluegrass-y song being played at our wedding.

3) Hands Down (Dashboard Confessional) – We also thought it might be cool to play the Dashboard version of this song as the recessional, mainly because we love it so much and can’t get enough of it! I also like that it would tie back to the beginning of the ceremony, and let those of our guests who haven’t heard the lyrics get to hear them.

So what do you think?

Which song should we use as our recessional?

hahaha! I am obsessed with gilmore girls and therefore you should probably disregard my vote. I am watching it right now.

Love your other choices though - that Dashboard song is truly beautiful. You can’t really go wrong. Great ideas!

I feel like you are my long lost twin! I have major love for both Dashboard and Gilmore Girls and am considering using “Stolen” and “Where You Lead” for our wedding!

I love Dashboard Confessional and I’m definitely in love with your choices! I think it would be cool to play the DC version of Hands Down for the recessional but I may be biased. :)

I am in LOVE with both Dashboard and VSQ.. I think it’s fantastic that you will be walking down the aisle to them. My FI and I are also not ones for the standard, traditional stuff (much to the disappointment of of my parents) and we are tossing around the idea of using VSQ as well. It is sure to be beautiful for you!

I like Dashboard as well! I can’t believe your friends actually recognized Canon in D and know what it’s called… or maybe my friends are just clueless haha. I personally think All I Want Is You is becoming horribly overplayed in weddings…

Love love LOVE this idea! We also don’t want the typical “wedding” songs but want the traditional sound.. this is the perfect solution to finding a song that actually means something to us. Thanks so much! Plus “Hands Down” is a great song- your trip down the aisle will definitely be magical :-)

Oh man! I desperately want to use VSQ for our ceremony, but my church basically says you either use their organist or you pay an extra bunch of money. Grrr… Jealousy aside, great song choices!

I couldn’t listen to the first song but I like the second one because after all of the seroiusness of the ceremony I just imagine the two of you skipping and dacning down the aisle to that song. haha. I think it would be a neat way to start the more light-hearted part of the day. But I LOOOVE Dashboard. I had a total life changing experience when I went to their concert, they are so amazing and will forever be in my heart. That being said you are my new favorite person for introducing me to the Vitamin String Quartet… because I hate the typical “here comes the bride” music. haha I think “As Lover’s Go” by DB would be a great song to play too! Love, Love, Love that song! :)

I was at a wedding a month or so ago and they used All I Want is You as their processional. The kicker was that the groom is deaf (the bride is hearing), and they had interpreters sign the lyrics of the song. The interpreters danced with each other during the instrumental parts in one of those hook-arms-and-turn-in-a-circle jigs. It was really fun. Also the bride and groom signed their vows to each other without interpretation for the guests, but they printed the vows in the program. It was one of the most beautiful ceremonies I’ve ever seen.

We had non traditional music, too. My processional was Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses” and the recessional was Alicia Keys “No One.” We danced our 1st dance to INXS “Never Tear Us Apart.”

I went through the same GG bender earlier this year! Seven seasons in four months. So awesome.

I don’t like Dashboard, but I am a music fanatic and definitely have bands I love as much as you love them. I think it’s awesome that you and your FH will have ceremony music that means so much to both of you!

I really like “All I Want Is You” for the recessional — it’s so happy and bouncy, and you could definitely dance up the aisle. :-)

I just recently discovered VSQ myself, and my FI and I are DEFINITELY looking into a few of their songs for ceremony music… They totally rock! :-)

Just curious, what will your first dance be to? Sorry if you’ve said already. I was wondering if my processional and first dance could be the same song, or if that’s overkill.

Wow thanks for sharing this - it’s been keeping me entertained all afternoon.

I looked thru their stuff and heard the “Don’t Stop Believin’” cover and thought it sounded familiar. Then I realized they do a similar version in The Wedding Singer (I don’t think it’s them but it’s a string version).

Our recessional is All I want is you so I’m partial. Although I think the association with pregnant teenagers is unfortunate.
