Mrs. Sand Dollar, Houston Age and Occupation: 24, Graphic Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 22, Electrical Technician Engagement Date: January 8, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: MacLean Park About Me: I'm a domestic diva down to the core. I heart cooking, sewing, baking, decorating and making sure we have a hand-crafted home. The best part about the wedding is I get to incorporate it all! I make sure I put my art degree to good use by screen printing, craft knife cutting, and a whole lotta graphic design. We're having a big-time party on a small-time budget, and I promise to show you a boot-scootin', barbecue-eatin', finger-lickin' good time! Mr. Sand Dollar and I spend most of our time on DIY projects or traipsing around the outdoors with our two pooches Rory and Juno. I'm looking forward to sharing our journey with all of you!
About Mrs. Sand Dollar

A Different Kind of Fine

July 25th, 2010 @ 4:25 pm by Mrs. Sand Dollar

Before Mr. SD proposed, I made sure to prime him with ring styles that I loved. I searched exclusively on Etsy and found the perfect seller, Single B jewelry. I loved how unique everything was, and organic. She uses recycled silver and conflict-free gemstones. They may not be traditional bling, but they fit my style perfectly! Here’s the one Mr. SD chose for me.

(Yes, Mr. SD hid the ring in his dip can. Klassy. He’s since quit—four months straight! Woohoo!) It’s a green moissanite set in recycled argentium silver. Green is my favorite color, and I love the durability of this stone. It’s a 9.5 on the hardness scale, so it should survive all my klutziness! I love that it was:  a) extremely affordable (as in, $150), b) durable (I never have to worry about where I wear it), and c) unique.

For the wedding band, I plan on going this route.

I’m a sucker for symmetry. It makes me smile every time I look at it. We plan on doing an upgrade around our five-year anniversary if we still feel like it. But right now, I’m in love with my ring. I get a few odd looks every now and then, and I do experience twinges of jealousy when I see other ladies’ bling. But when I remember just how perfect this ring is for me (usually when I realize I’m using harsh cleaning chemicals or the skill saw) I feel grateful that I have a man who knows me so well.

Any ladies out there pimping less-than-traditional rings? What do you have?

we are ring twins! i have the same ring, just in palladium white gold and with a white sapphire. i’ve gotten so many compliments on it. the setting is what made me ask for it. i’ve never seen anything similar!

That’s gorgeous. I’m non-traditional in that my engagement ring and wedding ring are not one in the same - my engagement ring has a center diamond and two sapphires, but they’re all the same size. It will be a right hand ring after the wedding. My wedding band is serious bling, but it was my grandmother’s wedding ring too. Keeping true, there’s no official wedding band either (it would need a custom band). Maybe we’ll get a wedding band one day, but I’m fine without one in any case.

I also have a non-traditional ring - a 3-stone square cut tanzanite.

Yours is gorgeous! And I love your plan for the wedding band.

My ring isn’t tradtional either. It’s made up of a cluster of smaller diamonds and shaped like a flower. Plus, my fiance got it from BJ’s, lol. Here it is.

What a lovely ring! I sometimes wish we’d gone the etsy route…Also yay for Mr. SD quitting. Good for him!

I love rings that are unique and speak about you as an individual instead of a big ugly diamond solitaire! Hate them! My ring is an oval tanzanite with a diamond halo and diamonds halfway down the band. My wedding band is a plain and simple sterling silver band with a knot on the top. I can’t wait to wear it and stop worrying about damaging my ring!

I think your ring is beautiful. I know what you mean about odd looks, or at least odd questions, as well as the twinges of jealousy, though! I have a small round tanzanite. It’s definitely different but very me, so it’s perfect.

Your ring is gorgeous! I think this is a great route rather than the traditional diamonds.

@iggies: Nice! You obviously have good taste ;) I have to admit I’m surprised there’s so many with nontraditional rings. I’m sure you get a lot of crazy eyes from the usual: “Oh! You’re engaged, let me see your ring! Is this a stand-in? When’s he buying you the real one?” People can be so rude sometimes!

It’s cool to see a post about SingleB–I used to be roommates with her! :) Beautiful ring.

I have a ruby, and people always comment on how beautiful it is but then turn their noses up when I let them know it’s my engagement ring.

Beautiful!
I love that the stone appears different colours - does it do that in real life or just for the pictures?

Will the wedding band go around the e-ring (and be fused together)? Cause that’s what it looks like on the listing!

Pretty ring!

Pretty ring. Mine is a stunt double (total fake diamond and some kind of silver looking metal) since the jewelry store messed up and we’re spending the money on the wedding instead.

What a beautiful ring! I love the color–I’m a big fan of green too. As long as it makes you happy, you shouldn’t worry about anything anyone else says.
