I love reading, writing, bicycles, animals, roller skating, and antique-y things of all sorts. I'm a vegetarian who likes spicy foods, while Fiancee Seahorse is a meat eater who does not like spices. We live outside Boston with our menagerie: a fifty pound dog, a one-eyed, seventeen-toed, toothless cat, and a perfectly put together cat who has a penchant for pooping near rather than in her litter box. In addition to planning our small lake-side wedding, we enjoy running around with the puppy, playing board games (Scrabble, anyone?), having little adventures, talking about how we should really clean the house more, and maintaining our little garden of vegetables and wedding flowers.
About Ms Seahorse

Blue Bridal Brigade

July 26th, 2010 @ 12:00 pm by Ms Seahorse

To be perfectly honest, bridesmaids’ dresses are not something in which I am willing to be terribly invested. You have all heard plenty about how much trouble I have dressing myself—and you expect me to dress a bunch of other people who all have different styles and different body types?

Um, H to the L nooooooo thank you.

That said, we did want to have some coherence in our bridal brigade - the people we asked to be in our bridal brigade are super important and incredibly helpful, and we wanted them to be recognizable. We also wanted them to be comfortable, and, especially given our current relationship with money (read: we have very little and are still trying to be alive, keep our pets alive, and plan our wedding), wanted them to spend an appropriate amount of money for them, whether that meant a lot o’ monies or a little bit o’ monies. This meant having a lot of flexibility.

First, we narrowed it down as far as colors go: navy. That was easy.

Then we emailed out pictures of dresses we liked, and then various people emailed us back. Simple, right?

Well, yeah, except their emails said things like:

“What about this dress in brown?” or “Hey, when are you going to be sending out your invitations?” or “I am thinking of wearing a pantsuit.”

Okay, the pantsuit would have been fine, but no, not that dress in brown. All we picked was one color! Do everything else however you want! After struggling with my frustration and guilt for a few minutes—we really weren’t asking much, right? Was it wrong of us to dictate a color? Should we be offering to buy our brigade’s dresses?—I realized that it was not that big a deal. So I wrote back, said blue only, and rumor has it people have dresses.

Here are some dresses we considered, modeled by my lovely MOH:

Blue Bridal Brigade : wedding boston bridesmaid dress 11 1

Are you really making me stand here so you can take pictures for your blog?

Blue Bridal Brigade : wedding boston bridesmaid dress 21 2

Fine, I’ll tolerate your crazy Seahorse antics.

Blue Bridal Brigade : wedding boston bridesmaid dress 31 3

Effortlessly beautiful, with me looking, ahem, casual in the background

Blue Bridal Brigade : wedding boston bridesmaid dress 4 4

I looooved this dress! I loved it like a dinosaur. Hi sister! It looks like you’re trying to be a dinosaur here! It’s safe to say this one’s a no?

Blue Bridal Brigade : wedding boston bridesmaid dress 5 5

uh, if i hold my breath and arch my shoulders it stays on…

I’m pretty sure no one got any of these dresses, and I’m pretty sure at least two people have their dresses. And I’m just not willing to be stressed out about it.

Miss Octopus said something interesting the other day about bridesmaids’ dresses:

I don’t necessarily think bridesmaid dresses need to be re-wearable. I think they should fall soundly within a reasonable budget (however “reasonable” is defined for the women in your party) and I think they shouldn’t be something that the bridesmaids would be embarrassed to wear again (a highly unflattering cut or material, for example), but other than that, I dunno. Wearing a dress that the bride chooses, even if it’s not necessarily something you’d choose yourself, is kind of a hallmark of the bridesmaid experience, I think, and it’s one that I didn’t feel compelled to revolutionize.

I think there’s a lot of freedom in that. And if I was the bridesmaid, freedom for me would be not making a decision: hand me an outfit, I will wear it and try to look good in it. But for us, now? It was wayyy less stress to let people do what they want.

Where are you on the spectrum? Do you want your options, or your dress handed to you? Do you even notice bridesmaids at weddings? Tell me about your favorite dress! Readygo!

For my bridesmaids, my FI and I picked a color/fabric combo and 4 styles we liked. The bridesdmaids each get to pick their own style based on their body types/preferences. So, we’re a little more restricted than you, but I did make sure to pick all dresses below $200. I agree that picking a color is not asking too much!

I really wish I had gone your route - that is let them choose their own dresses within one color. However, my bridesmaids didnt want to do this!! They all thought it would be easier for me to choose the oufit so that’s what I did. The dress I chose is not that rewearable (I mean it could be, but really!?) but its not ugly or unflattering or a hideous color. So I think I did okay! PS - does your sister look good in every dress!?

This made me LOL, especially the dinosaur picture! I really like the first and the second.

I really like the first three dresses, and navy is a great bridesmaid dress color. If anyone had ever said to me: “Navy blue, go!” I would have a rewearable dress for sure. ;)

That said, this is definitely my favorite approach. I like shopping and I like wearing things I feel like I look good in, so I’d always prefer to pick my own clothes when given the option. I do think it’s the bride’s (or brides’ ;) prerogative to pick whatever dress she wants, but there’s nothing wrong with making your bridesmaids happy, either, if that’s what you want!

I’m going with the dictator route…picking the color, the cut and they are all going to be identical (except maybe my MOH) and they will love them. Or if not they won’t tell me and I am fine with that :)

This is all easy for me to say right now though since I have done zero thinking about the BM dresses…I might be singing a different tune after trying to make 6 different ladies happy.

I think your approach was good, to give a color and let ‘em pick out their own! I picked out my color at JCrew but let each girl pick out their own style…Worked for us!

I’m here in Israel fresh from yesterday’s wedding in which I was a blue bridesmaid - I will say, we were given similar instructions, and though there was an array, it looked gorgeous together! I was a little stressed about finding the right dress in the right color, but now I have a dress I LOVE and I will definitely wear again. Just be patient with your girls and support their choices and questions (except of course, a navy dress isn’t brown…) because that’s what I needed!

When it came to shopping for my girls, I went out ahead of time with my MOH (and younger sister) and mom to scope out the options. I ended up deciding on a color and fabric type, with three style options. The three of us LOVED one particular style, and the other two were fine as well. When I went out shopping with everyone, I explained what we thought, they all tried all three, and ended up loving and choosing my original favorite. It was definitely helpful to know kind of what I was looking for before taking everyone out shopping. The girls asked ME what I wanted them to wear, and so were receptive to my suggestion and ended up loving it to boot!

I’m game for whatever. Every bride gets her day, so if she wants me to wear something tacky, (sigh) so be it. I’ll still have a not so nice opinion which I’ll keep to myself, but I’ll live.

Oh, I love those navy dresses! We had navy as well and I had a really hard time finding ones that I liked! Ended up getting them from Target and they worked out great :)
