I love to dance regardless of who is watching, and enjoy a good laugh with my girls. I have a soft spot in my heart for planet Earth, my two dogs and my fiance. Fall is my favorite season (which is why we are marrying in September), but I love a warm summer day and the Colorado mountains in the winter. We are planning a modern soiree downtown, with lots of bold colors, and fun, eco-friendly elements.
About Mrs. Argyle

BFF with the Cricut

July 27th, 2010 @ 12:59 pm by Mrs. Argyle

So, that Cricut of mine? It’s been in our coat closet since the day I bought it (a year ago—no joke). And, since we scrapped the envelope liners I was at a loss of what we were going to use it for. Especially since I’m not much of a DIY-er.

The solution? Belly bands. I toyed with this idea off and on for some time and with a little nudging from Mr. A, it was a go. I was definitely not going to hand cut them—I totes don’t have the patience for that, and I wanted to forgo the hand cramping. Insert the Cricut.

I had downloaded Sure Cuts a Lot (SCAL) a while back, knowing that the Cricut Design Studio was not compatible with my Mac, plus I can import .SVG files from Illustrator if I ever needed to create a custom design. You can only do so much with a Cricut cartridge.

First I used SCAL to create an 8.5 x 11 file that would have 9 strips of paper for each piece of paper, evenly sized.

I lined up my paper on the Cricut cutting mat and loaded it up, then hit the “Cut” button on the screen. And away the Cricut went a-cutting.

All that was left to do after doing this 20 times (it went by quickly, promise), was the peel them off of the sticky mat. Check out those perfect strips!

And, lots of scraps!

But wait. I couldn’t just have a plain ol’ strip of chocolate brown paper. So, I decided to add circles to the mix. To go along with this whole “circles” theme we’ve been playing off of. And, boy was the Cricut ever helpful. If you thought it did wonders with the strips, it was a LIFE SAVER on the circles. Especially since we opted for two sizes.

Oh glorious Cricut how I bow down to thee.

So, how did they turn out? Quite fantastically, if I do say so myself. Guess you’ll just have to wait for the reveal…

@Mrs. Hamster: It was a little trial and error, but it really makes cutting paper easy!

@Miss Seashell: The Cricut creations has endless possiblities. We made something simple, but love that you can get complex with it too.

can you actually create the circles and strips in SCAL? Or do you have to create them in Illustrator first, then import the file into SCAL?

I’ve been doing the latter, but only because I have some (illegally) downloaded copy of SCAL that my husband got me. I’ve barely used it because I find it annoying to have to make everything in illustrator first. So with the real version, can you make circles and lines and anything thing you want in it directly without downloading svg files or making your own svg files in illustrator?

@Linda: A belly band is a strip of paper you wrap around your invitation suite to “hold” it all together.
