Mrs. Glasses's Picture
Mrs. Glasses, Tokyo/Los Angeles, CA Age and Occupation: 24, English teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, English teacher Engagement Date: September 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Parents' backyard About Me: I’m an expat living in Tokyo. I’ve been in Japan for almost three years now, where I met my fantastic English fiance. It’s time to leave Japan, so we are planning a fun, intimate, backyard ceremony back home in the suburbs of L.A. in October. Our wedding will be a mix of my love for food, beer, my Japanese culture, and Mr. G’s Englishness. We are on a tiny budget and DIYing almost everything!
About Mrs. Glasses

Densha De Omouta!

July 28th, 2010 @ 10:05 am by Mrs. Glasses

Or, I thought of it on the train. I was riding one of these babies to work today,

when suddenly, crammed between a high school girl wearing her skirt too short and a salary man who smelled of last night’s booze, I had a brilliant idea!

Densha De Omouta! : wedding food los angeles Roast B

(source)

An English roast! I’ve gotta give myself a round of applause for that one. I mean, Mr. G and food are the center of my universe. You know how they say guys are always thinking about sex? I’m always thinking about food, in a totally fattie foodie way. Before I got into wedding blogs, I was reading food blogs. I love gourmet stuff. I love trashy eats. I love stuff from all over the globe. What I love most about living in Tokyo is the abundance of “tabehoudai” or all-you-can-eat deals. So, of course, reception food is a big deal to me! Dare I say it? I think food is a higher priority than music.

One of the things I’ve been thinking about for the grubbing portion of our backyard ceremony is what type of food we’d serve. Our wedding will have elements of Japan from cherry blossoms and paper lanterns and origami, so it’s Asian-inspired. I think it would be weird to serve something Italian or Greek; I mean, no family from either one of us is anything but anything but Caucasian and Japanese. I didn’t want to serve Japanese food because I don’t want everything to scream Japan. So we were in a pickle… mmm, pickles…

Back to my train ride. I was thinking about how I wanted our wedding to incorporate bits and pieces of “us” because my family and friends haven’t seen me in a minute and they’ve barely met Mr. G at all—they certainly haven’t experienced us as a couple enough. Well, the Japan thing is one thing and we WILL be having beer pong because I am the Queen Of Beer Pong and King’s Cup is “our” game. What elements of our day represent Mr. G? Mr. G likes Transformers, hamburgers, pizza, and beer. Mr. G was an English major. Mr. G has two middle names. Mr. G is English. Mr. G… is English. English weather? No, no, not in Southern California. English… food!

What better way to get to know someone’s culture than through their food? It’ll be memorable and interesting. It’ll also be hard to find someone to cater it, but through my Googling skills I think I’ve found a few places. This is one of those times when planning so far away really is a disadvantage; we’ll have to wait until we get to L.A. in October to try it out and get Mr G’s authenticity seal of approval.

What elements of “you” are you incorporating into your special day?

Beer Pong at a wedding? Can I come?! Hee hee. I love the English roast idea - what a great way to incorporate Mr. G’s heritage. Some of my best ideas happen on the train…or in the shower. You know.

@July: We aren’t having dancing so if, at the end of the night, people still wanna stick around after the cake has been cut and the food has been packed up, we could have a leisurely game with whoever wants to hang out!

@Mrs. D’orsay: Oooooooof course Mrs. D! Dude, last month I tried to make Toad in the Hole for Mr. G.. epic fail. I messed the batter up big time, I think. Mad props if you can make Yorkshire puds!

excellent idea, I’m English and FI is “Texican” (Texan + Mexican) and we’re having our wedding in the UK so we’ve decided to go with a Texican theme for our food, I think it’s a great way to honor one persons culture/heritage if the wedding is taking place away from their “home” :)

If you’re doing English food at a wedding, the most traditional thing is probably the wedding cake - fruitcake (but, you know, actually good).

@Tamara: haha that’s what i want for my wedding - i think curry can be classed as England’s national dish, yum yum! Forget roast beef or fish n’ chips, chicken jalfrezi is the way to go :)
i’ve been in the US for almost 6 years and proper curry is pretty much the only thing i really miss. And a decent cup of tea. And proper chocolate. And brown sauce. And a pint of bitter. Who am i kiddin’? I wanna go home!!!

Mmmm, you guys are making me want curry! Please do fish n’ chips. I think it might be a cultural requirement. Oo, oo, and Cadbury! Real Cadbury! I know you’re doing the Japanese candy thing, but REAL CADBURY IS SO SO AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@silversixpence: Don’t know where you’re living, but if you can get to the San Francisco Bay Area, you will find proper curry!

Daniel made me promise that we’d have good food at our wedding. It wasn’t a hard sell as I am definitely a foodie. The location and my dress are the only things that are more important to me.
