Mrs. Husky's Picture
Mrs. Husky, Denver Age and Occupation: 26, Systems Administrator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Mechanical Engineer, recently laid off Engagement Date: August 14, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Rancho San Carlos About Me: I am planning a quirky-crafty wedding with my recently out-of-work fiancé for a (fingers crossed!) warm October afternoon. We are two self-professed nerds with an affinity for all things outdoors---be it rain, snow or shine. Recently relocated from the drizzly Northwest, we're enjoying the many sun-soaked days in the mile high city. Our day will be filled with both of our large families and friends, a self-served Cajun feast, and a Zydeco-style jazz band rocking beneath the beams of a historic red barn.

A Cover for Your Hay?

July 28th, 2010 @ 5:16 pm by Mrs. Husky

Even before we found a barn for our reception, my heart had fluttered over this photo:

I’d never before seen bales of hay look so cozy and inviting. When we looked at the barn that would become our reception site, about a third of it was occupied by hay bales stacked floor to ceiling. The owners assured me it would be removed before the wedding, but I realized it gave me the perfect opportunity to use this idea. I asked if they would leave a few bales to place around the perimeter of the barn, and they told me they would set up the hay however I liked.

Now it was time to come up with covers.

The way I see it, we have a few options.

  • Buy a large bolt of fabric and cut out the covers. I could leave the edges fraying, or I could seam up each side of the cover. Of course, the former would be less time-consuming…

  • Search for pillowcases at thrift stores or on eBay. Perhaps I would find some cute vintage patterns? I would cut the open edge off the case and sew it up the side. If I wanted padding for it, I could stuff it with an old blanket. I’m imagining something along these lines:

(image from instructions to turn a pillowcase into a cat bed)

  • A sort of combination of the above two ideas—find old blankets in thrift stores and on eBay and cut them to hay-bale size. I would still leave the edges frayed and still look for fun patterns, and they would have built-in padding. If I go this route, however, I will have to find blankets that aren’t stuffed like a comforter—they would have to be a single thick layer. Or I could search for various throws, and have something like this:

Which type of hay bale covers should I try? Maybe I should test out all three theories and see which looks best?

Those all look great, but I would definitely incorporate padding. Thin fabric could = hay poking through. Have fun making them.

If you go the pillowcase route, be sure to measure the hay bales first. In my experience, the bale is going to be bigger than the pillowcase - I grew up on a dairy farm, and have many memories of haying. (I don’t miss haying, it’s usually very hot and if you don’t wear pants, your legs get all scratched up. Cows were fun, though.) :)

Look for old quilts at thrift stores, yard sales, blogs…they are at least 3 fabrics thick and would be a cool, vintage look…with a variety of patterns/styles! We are doing this for my sisters wedding…and I think it is awesome!

Um, jealous! This is awesome. I would go with a blanket b/c it’s thicker. IKEA makes inexpensive (cute) throw blankets or you could start collecting from thrift shops.

That first picture just looks like plain fleece on top. Perhaps you could find some cheap yardage fleece at a fabric store. That would be comfy to sit on/

That last picture is one of my inspiration pictures and is easily my favorite option of the three.

Husky; you minx! I literally just added a post about hay bale seating to my queue. I think this decides it: we’re planning the same exact wedding. And the only solution is for me to come to Colorado and you to get your butt back to Texas so we can experience being the bride and a guest at the most rockin wedding ever!

I vote for testing out all of the option, then picking based on looks/convenience :)

I had expected straw bales to be uncomfortable seating, and that we would need blankets or covers for them. But I was surprised to find that we didn’t actually need covers at all. Of course if you sit on the bales in bare legs, it might be a bit spiky. But I don’t think anyone had a problem, as all were wearing dresses or trousers that gave them enough protection.

Of course, the aesthetic qualities of good coverings on bales can’t be denied! But before you commit your (apparently limited) budget to buying reams of material, or new rugs, do try sitting on them in a summer dress, so that you can decide for yourself whether your guests will absolutely need coverings or not.

Also, a tip for any other brides out there: compare the difference in price between hay bales and straw bales. We found straw much cheaper.

I will not be helpful at all, as I’m not having a rustic wedding and have no idea what you’d use for this, but this idea is SO FLIPPIN’ CUTE! I totally see why your heart fluttered at that first photo. Just darling!

@Pastachica is right–hay is $$ these days for many reasons, but people will pay more since it is used for feed (straw is not).
Straw looks the same but is cheaper, and is just as comfortable for sitting! It comes in square bales too.

@Miss Sand Dollar: That is so funny! I guess you can get the girl out of Texas, but can’t get the Texas out of the girl… ;) I love your bride:guest idea!
