Flowers (Kind Of)

July 29th, 2010 @ 3:50 pm by Miss Glasses

Today over lunch Mr. Glasses and I talked about flowers. He had fun.

We talked about how there wouldn’t be a whole lot of room for flowers and decided what we’d use them for. A few centerpieces, and a bridal bouquet. That’s all! Furthermore, since we’re running with a cherry blossom theme, quite a lot of our flowers will be fake!

I’m trying hard to make sure our wedding isn’t super pink for Mr. G’s sake, but I definitely want my bouquet to be pink! Pink is my favorite color. :D

I also really like the idea of a flower petal aisle. It would be nice to have an aisle runner as well but that’s pretty low on my priority list. If it happens that would be great but if I don’t have time for it, the petals will do. I’m thinking red petals to go with the red, pink, black and white thing we’ve got going on.

Although I think logistically flower petal aisles are made with plastic petals. Wow, our ceremony really lacks in the flower department! Which got me thinking—what alternatives to flowers are out there?

Fruit is becoming a popular alternative, and they really go great to tie a color scheme together.

Another look I love is candles. Candles can replace flowers anywhere, as centerpieces or a bouquet, as decor for the walls. Anyone remember Ross and Emily’s wedding on Friends? Talk about candles! It must’ve taken a million hours to light all those candles! I think it’s sooo worth it, though. So romantic!

They’re easy centerpieces to recreate and budget-conscious, too!

What creative alternative centerpieces and decor have you seen around the internet?

I love the candle thing — I tried to convince my mom in favor of all-candle centerpieces, but I couldn’t really sell it. She’s surprisingly traditional! But candles really only work once the sun goes down, or inside. I like the fruit idea though! If your colors include red and pink, and your wedding’s in October, what about apples? Some varieties, like pink ladies, are gorgeous colors!

I’m with you on using “flowers” throughout the wedding. I am planning on doing a variety of different things using the IDEA of flowers but not real, fresh flowers. I am just HOPING and PRAYING that it doesn’t all look stupid together!!

Things that I’m planning to make/use: brooch bouquet for my, fabric flower bouquet for BM’s (similar to what Miss Locket is doing http://www.weddingbee.com/2010/07/27/diy-fabric-flower-bouquet/) and a flower petal aisle.

For the flower petal aisle, I bought silk flower petals in white and cream for a slight contrast and I’m planning on hand stitching them to an aisle runner. The ones I got don’t feel plastic-y at all!

now you have me thinking…. =)

What about frames from peoples houses with family photos?

If you are doing the fruit thing… grapefruits might work with those colors.

Greens instead of flowers? Give it a garden feel?

For flowers at my wedding, my mother in law and I went to the store that morning an bought a bunch of flowers and she helped me tie them with a vintage ribbon. We got extra roses and had my nephew scatter the petals on the tables before the ceremony (gave him something to do) For centerpieces, we put candles in clear vases and glued some organza white ribbon near the top rim and hung some silver monkey charms from the ribbon knot. We also put a different family wedding photo in a frame on each table.

Not so creative, but we used potted orchids which were a lot cheaper than cut flower centerpieces. We painted the pots red to go with our black, white and red theme. The pic with the pink tapers is just gorgeous. I also love the pink bouquets.

I like candles too, but I think my favorite is the one flower immersed in water look. I don’t know why, but I feel like that would work well for an ocean view reception. And it feels elegant and not cheap.
