Signature Scent

July 29th, 2010 @ 11:05 am by Mrs. Husky

My skin tone is… well, it’s sort of a whiter shade of pale. Of primarily Scottish descent, I inherited extremely fair skin. I like to describe it as “Nicole Kidman” or “porcelain doll”, but most everyone else calls it “Casper” or “vampire”. Regardless, my skin is very sensitive to sunlight and I have learned the hard way that sunscreen is an absolute, non-negotiable necessity any time I am outside. Generally, I can deal with the greasiness and the scent of a poolside summer. But on our wedding day? Well, let’s just say it’s not the “signature scent” I had in mind.

(scent vs. smell)

Scent is strongly tied to memory for me.

The scent of honeysuckle will always take me back to my grandmother’s backyard. Anytime I smell curry, I’m reminded of the first time Husky and I cooked together, and I lit his kitchen towel on fire. I splurged on a bottle of Vera Wang perfume with the thought that I would wear it the day of our wedding, and then only on certain occasions afterward, in the hope that it would bring memories of our day wafting back with the scent.

Our ceremony will be mid-afternoon in a notoriously sunny state. If I go without sunscreen, I risk a very uncomfortable honeymoon and unflattering photos, not to mention the health risks. So I have been in search of a product with little to no scent—something that will be easily masked by the Vera Wang.

So far, it seems my best options are:

  • La Roche-Posay Anthelios 45 Ultra-Light Fluid. Most reviews I find for this claim it is nearly scent-less. It’s far more expensive than the sunscreen I typically use, but if it works, it could be worthwhile. I found it on a website that offers free shipping, and a solid return policy if I’m not satisfied, but the cost of return shipping would be on me.

  • Eucerin Everyday Protection SPF 15 Body Lotion. I’ve used Eucerin’s non-SPF body lotion in the past. There is a very slight scent to it, but it disappears after application. The price is about the same as what I would normally pay for sunscreen, which is a huge bonus.

  • Bull Frog SuperBlock Lotion SPF 45. This one surprised me. It’s not touted as an unscented option, but I’ve found it mentioned several times in discussions of unscented sunscreen options. The only problem with this one is that it has proven difficult to find. Apparently, Bull Frog updated their formula to SPF 50 by adding more titanium oxide. Many reviewers describe the consistency as glue-like, which is not ideal, and they recommend the SPF 45. I’ve found it in a few online locations, but it seems hard to come by.

  • NO-AD Sunblock Lotion, SPF 50. At first, I thought “NO-AD” meant No Additives, but I learned that it actually means No Advertising. This brand prides itself on a quality product over a well-funded advertising budget, with the belief that the sunblock will speak for itself. It certainly seems to in most reviews I’ve read. Also – it’s cheap!

Has anyone else tried any or all of these sunscreens? Any input regarding the scent or sun-protection? How are you keeping your skin safe on the big day?

I am of the rip-off-my-clothes-and-flop-onto-my-towel variety, meaning I never use sunblock. Which is why I am peeling to the extreme and mega-brown right now and will be wrinkle with lots of liver spots when I’m older! One smart cookie, I know.

I don’t remember NO-AD being scentless, but I do remember it being good and inexpensive. I feel your pain. I didn’t wear sunscreen to our tented wedding reception, and even though pics were outside, I didn’t burn. (I am 3/4 Irish & 1/4 Scottish -very pale, but don’t burn that easily so I use SPF 15 or 30.)

I would give some of the department store brands a go for at least your face. Or, if you order online, I would go with Mary Kay products. I am also of the “Nicole Kidman” variety and love Mary Kay products because they are low or no scent, non-greasy, absorb quickly, and offer good spf.

I don’t know about no scent, but the neutrogena sunscreen I get smells like orange creamsavers to me. It is also not greasy at all. I love it.

I heartily recommend the BullFrog or No-Ad. I personally have used the BullFrog SPF 50 and don’t find it too “glue” like. I always just wash my hands after application. It dries non-sticky.

I use No-Ad on a regular basis and it is a WONDERFUL product!!

As a fellow fair skined gal. I highly recomend Kiehls Vital Sun Protections SPF 40. It is fragrance-free, water-resistant, and non-greasy. Its a little expensive, but totally worth it. Also they have free samples that you could stock up on if you didn’t want to shell out for the full sized product. http://www.kiehls.com/_us/_en/sun/vital-sun-protection/vital-sun-protection-lotion-spf-40.htm

Just a heads up on that Eucerin stuff — it is GREASY as all heck. I know you said you don’t mind the grease factor so much because you’re used to it, but this isn’t just normal sunscreen greasy. This is I-dipped-myself-into-a-vat-of-olive-oil-and-tried-to-rub-it-in-but-it-is-just-sitting-on-my-skin greasy. It literally does not absorb or dry at all. Definitely not worth the $8 or discomfort for only SPF 15.

(YMMV, of course; this was just my experience with it!)

I really like neutrogena’s ultra sheer dry-to-touch sunblocks. They are lightweight and don’t have an overpowering scent. They also go up to 100+ spf which is really nice! They are affordable as well. Try it out! Also, a lot of makeup products have spf in them as well, which is super convenient for your face. I use Aveda tinted moisturizer with spf in it as well as Aveda duel foundation with spf in it as well. Good luck!

If you want a product that will be scentless, I would look at the Clinique counter. Their products have no scent whatsoever and they’re also good for sensitive skin. I know they make sunscreen, as well. As someone else pointed out, you could also make sure your makeup includes an SPF, as well.

No-Ad was scentless, but they added scent to their formulation this year.

Do not like the Eucerin! It’s greasy and I really did not appreciate the smell!

Let me preface this by saying that I’m also super pale, on top of which I tend to get sun poisoning, so I have stonger feelings about sunblock than the average bear:

I LOVE No-Ad. Seriously, it’s amazing. The higher SPF formulas can feel a little thick, but the 15 and 30 are lovely, and the scent is pretty much nonexistant. I go through several jugs a summer.

Bullfrog works great, but greasy, greasy, greasy. It isn’t even a lotion its an oil. No-AD is my favorite, but it is sunblock. No frills. I would go with the lotion as long as you don’t think that you are going to be sweating too much

as mentioned above by a few others - neutrogena ultra sheer spray comes in 70-100 spf and it is super light and does not have a smell. I have an allergy to the sun that makes me break out so I have to weat this almost any time I am outside and it is like its not even there. inexpensive compared to some others also

We stayed at Encore @ Wynn Las Vegas, and I bought this:

It’s expensive, but super, super awesome.

I’m a big fan of the Neutrogena line of sunblocks. My skin is both pale and sensitive, and I find that the Bullfrog and Eucerin products make me break out like a crazy person. Neutorgena also just introduced a new line of 50+ SPF lotions for your face that use only natural sunblocks and I luuurve them.

anthelios is great- i live in france where ‘regular’ american sunblock isn’t available and it’s impossible to find ANYTHING under 10€. it has very little scent (certainly neither offensive nor overly beachy) and i wouldn’t describe it as greasy at all.

if you want a sunscreen that smells good, alba makes a lavender one that is quite lovely.

I am a big fan of Aveeno sunscreen. It isn’t greasy and it doesn’t smell overly sunscreen-y.
