Mrs. Earrings's Picture
Mrs. Earrings, Fresno, CA/ Nelson, New Zealand Age and Occupation: 20, Student, Wannabe Writer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 19, Photography Student Engagement Date: February 14, 2010 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Gardens of the World About Me: I'm a girl from down under who grew up in Indonesia and I'm marrying a California boy. I'm addicted to all things sweet, have never met a chocolate silk pie than can get the better of me, and have dreams of one day being a fulltime novelist. I go weak in the knees for lace, tea cups, and a beautifully crafted sentence. When I get excited about something (whether it is historical linguistics or the Beatles) I tend to go overboard in research, and planning this wedding is no different. Mr. Earrings is my high school sweetheart, my best friend, and somehow we combine all our quirks into one big happy mess.
About Mrs. Earrings

I know that the “something old, something new, etc.” tradition is referring to the bride’s get-up, but somehow it looks like our wedding is slowly acquiring things that fit the tradition as well. I already told you about our something blue for the day, now let me tell you about our “something old”:

Something Old: Our Cake Topper : wedding cake decor new zealand Caketop CakeTop

Otherwise known as the cake topper from the day Mr E’s parents got married back in the ’80s.

FMIL will be carrying it all the way from California to NZ in her carry-on luggage. Yep, the figurines don’t particularly look like us (well, the guy looks like Mr E if he had really short hair, but I don’t have reddish hair, I’m waaay shorter than Mr E than that, and my dress is nothing like the girl’s dress), BUT they’re cute and the cake topper is an heirloom from Mr E’s family and that is important to us. It meant a lot when Mr E’s mum brought it up and asked if we wanted to use it.

Next to a can of peaches so I could judge the size

A blurry close-up of the heads…

… and a back view

As you might be able to tell from the can of peaches shot, this cake topper is fairly large as cake toppers go. And you may know from one of my previous posts about our cake that it won’t be large enough to support a topper that size. Hence, this is  why the topper will go in front of/next to the cake on our dessert table, which will take pride of place in the middle of all the cupcakes. :)

Are you incorporating something from your parents’ or future in laws’ wedding in your day?

It’s so cute. I love it. I’m really hoping to find a nice vintage cake topper for our wedding.

Very cute! I love that you’re getting to use the same topper his parents used - so sweet!

really sweet - no - we have no heirlooms incorperated - but that’s just because my family aren’t into all that - but I guess my FI might have something - I have no idea lol

My parents have the EXACT same one. Maybe it’s an 80s thing (they were married in ‘82). My mom loves it and its on their fireplace mantel.

I think that’s a sweet cake topper, and a wonderful way to honor Mr. E’s folks!

I have my FI’s grandparents cake topper that they used at their wedding 55 years ago! It is super cute and fits our vintage theme.

I love it-looks like Lladro. So wow, you said way back in the 80’s. My parents were married in the FIFTIES. My SISTER was married in the 80’s, and um I have a NIECE the same age as your fiance. Feeling old right now. :)

Sweet! I don’t think my parents saved anything from their wedding day. This is really special.

I am so happy you wrote about this. I have something similar and am struggling as to how to display it. Are you just going to stand it up next to the cake? are you creating a base or box of some sort?

@Heather: we will probably just stand it next to the cake :)
