I make sure I put my art degree to good use by screen printing, craft knife cutting, and a whole lotta graphic design. We're having a big-time party on a small-time budget, and I promise to show you a boot-scootin', barbecue-eatin', finger-lickin' good time! Hay There!

July 30th, 2010 @ 11:13 am by Mrs. Sand Dollar

Our ceremony is going to be short and sweet. Sometime this month when I get around to it, I’ll try to read it out and time it to about 10 minutes. We plan on having our guests stand surrounding us in a semi-circle, however, we’d like to have a couple of rows for our elderly guests or those who have difficulty standing for that long. We can’t afford to rent chairs, and we toyed with the idea of bringing in mismatched chairs. I’d die if we could find enough pews (I own one, but it’s having an extended stay at a friend’s house), but it seems benches and pews won’t happen either. So what’s a girl with nearly empty pockets to do?

Hay bales! How perfect are these? And I adore the quilts. I have one, and Mr. SD’s grandmother has about four to work with. Won’t these be absolutely darling? And the plan is to recycle them over to the pavilion after the ceremony to make a s’mores station. Because everybody loves s’mores! I can’t wait to see pro pics of me and the mister roasting marshmallows together. It’s gonna be awesome!

What other different seating options have you seen? Maybe you could save a poor, needy bride a few extra bucks!

These are really cute! Where do you even find hay bales though?

Our ceremony will be similar in length– 15-20 min maybe. $300 just seems to be ridiculous for some white chairs. I’m intersted in seeing what some of the other bees come up with as I am allergic to hay!!!

Yay! I love the idea of “recycling” the seating for a s’more station. Can I come?

Don’t hold me to this, but I’ve been told that straw bales are even cheaper than hay. You may want to look into that to keep prices even further down.

we rented straw bales from a feed store. we paid the full amount ($5/bale) when they dropped off Friday and then we were reimbursed 50% when we returned them on Sunday after the wedding. We paid $20 pickup and then delivered ourselves b/c FIL has a trailer that was easy to load up.

As a person who is constantly loading and unloading trailers full of hay- I want you to make sure that you aware of a few things. First of all hay is not necessarily cheap! Right now in MN it is about $3/bale (and from the pictures it looks like four bales can seat about 6 normal sized people). Straw would be cheaper, not smell as bad, and less likely to get all over pant legs. Make sure that there are people designated to move the bales (that are not allergic to hay if you do stick with haybales), and that they bring an extra set of clothing long sleeved clothing so they don’t get covered in bale debris or get their arms scratched up (both hay and straw can do this). Very cute idea though! I might have to look into something similar- since i can easily reuse the hay!

I saw pews listed in a local bulletin board last week and almost bought them just in case! How sad is that!

We are actually using bleachers for our wedding. The place we are getting married at will let us use their bleachers (which are brand new, and they keep them inside!) We are renting about 40 white chairs for family and the elderly people that are invited, but for the most part our 140 guest wedding, they will be sitting on spacious, shiny silver bleachers!!!
