Luckily, I'm a pretty persuasive girl because I managed to convince my high school boyfriend (now fiance!), Mr. Cardigan, to ditch his hardcore Longhorn ways and join me up at A&M, where we currently reside with our adorable dogs, Cullen & Ranger. We're currently planning a bright, cheery wedding with a ridiculous amount of DIY projects that I can't wait to tackle! I love crafting in any form, reading, and margaritas (I think I love them the most!). Organization is what keeps me sane and I love helping others, which is probably why I ended up as an education major. It gets a little chaotic sometimes when you're planning a wedding among all of the papers, projects, finals, and certification exams, but we're having the time of our lives and we can't wait to get started on our journey as husband and wife - and we're so excited to share our wedding with the hive!

Aunt Bea’s Wedding

July 30th, 2010 @ 9:51 am by Mrs. Cardigan

This afternoon, Mr. Cardigan and I went to see a movie that I’ve been looking forward to for a long time: Ramona and Beezus.

I was mildly obsessed with the Ramona books as a kid, and I was so thrilled to go see the movie. Now, for those of you who haven’t seen it, there are a few mild spoilers coming up—but anyone who read the books should know about it anyway!

In the movie, Ramona’s Aunt Bea gets married to her high school sweetheart, Hobart. The catch? He proposes three days before he has to leave for Alaska, leaving them a mere two days to plan a wedding from start to finish.

Now, the type-A wedding planner in me heard this and started having mental panic attacks. What will they do for food? Where will they have it? What about a dress? And a DJ? What about invitations?!

But the happy couple calmly smiled at one another and said that they’d make it work. Aunt Bea wore her sister’s wedding dress, they had it in the backyard, and the local elementary school music teacher took care of the music. And you know what? The wedding was as beautiful and tear-inducing as any other wedding I’ve seen. The couple’s love for one another really shone through, and it was truly a reflection of them and their devotion to one another.

Now, I know it’s just a movie. I know that in the real world, pulling together a wedding in two days is stressful for everyone involved and not nearly as simple as they make it look. But it can be done. And people do it all the time, I’m sure. Even though it’s a little silly, seeing that wedding reminded me of what really matters in all of this: us. We’re getting married because we love one another and we want to be together forever. Sure, I’m insanely excited about planning everything, and crafting my heart out, and seeing our wedding come together, but if it really came down to it I would be happy driving down to the courthouse with Mr. C and marrying him with no guests, no food, no dancing, and no dress.

As much as this wedding means to me, and as excited as I am about it, it’s always a wonderful and humbling thing to remember that our relationship is what really matters in the end, and that this wedding is just a fun way to celebrate it. Once it’s all over and real life begins, it’s just going to be us—this wedding will just be one day out of our lives, and it certainly won’t be the most important one. We’ve been fully committed to one another for years now, and our wedding is just a representation of that—it’s not going to change our relationship in any dramatic way. We’ll still be just as in love as we are now and just as committed to one another as we are now. We’ll just have a certificate that proves it!

As the next few months of planning fly by, I’m going to try to remember Aunt Bea’s wedding and remember how beautiful and special it was, even without all of the “extras.” I’m going to remember that my relationship with Mr. Cardigan is what’s really important, and that flowers, paper products, and cake aren’t what make a marriage. In the end, it’s just us and our love for one another—regardless of how our wedding turns out, we’ll always have that.

You said it! I’ve been stressing ever since working out the timeline with the band… how will everyone have time to appreciate all the details!! But really, as long as there’s love in the air, who cares about the deets?

So true! My military cousin had a surprise wedding to his fiancee in their living room, and it was lovely and so sweet. There is something so romantic and timeless about a small family wedding.

I just saw Ramona and Beezus on Sunday and I have to say that the same thoughts were running through my head about Aunt Bea’s wedding. It’s nice to be reminded about the importance of the marriage not only the wedding day.

Cute! And I’m very impressed you got Mr Cardy to go with you to see that movie, there’s no way in H-E-double hockey sticks Mr TM would go with me to that one!

I love the Ramona books and was so excited to hear about the movie! There’s no way I could plan a wedding in three days. I had a nervous breakdown three MONTHS before the big day!

I really needed this post right now. I’ve been in a funk the past couple of days as we’ve been taking a good hard look at our budget again and realizing how many things just aren’t going to happen. Videographer- likely not in the cards for us. Photobooth- not going to happen either, unless I can figure out the DIY route. I have no clue if/how we’re going to pull off our rehearsal dinner, let alone the post-wedding brunch I wanted to do. And, worst of all- It’s looking unlikely that we can afford to do a honeymoon. At least not right away.. which at 6 or 8 months down the line then just becomes a vacation, not really a honeymoon in my eyes.
I’ve been going around boo-hooing, but then I have moments of clarity- like you, where I realize that overall it’s not going to matter. We have a roof over our heads, food on our table, good friends, and each other. We are blessed. The wedding will be beautiful because it’s about us and our commitment. Whether or not we have a photobooth will not make or break our wedding. Whether or not we have a honeymoon will not make or break our marriage.
Thanks for the perspective reminder, Cardy.

@Mrs. Trail Mix: He was just dying to go see a movie, haha :) He’s awesome about going to see movies I want to see!
@missbiscuit: I’m so sorry you’re going through so much! I definitely know how you feel, but I just keep reminding myself it’s the marriage that matters, not the wedding!

I wanted to BE Ramona. When I was about 7 or 8 I started campaigning to be called Ramona. Fortunately, that never caught on.

How did you feel about Ramona & Beezus? I have serious issues with the casting of Selena Gomez. Beezus is supposed to be sort of awkward and uncomfortable in her own skin, not a living Bratz doll.

@Miss Octopus: Yeah, Selena Gomez was definitely way too pretty and confident to be playing Beezus - the movie focuses a lot more on Ramona, though, so it didn’t bother me too much. Ramona was cast wonderfully!
