Mrs. Husky, Denver Age and Occupation: 26, Systems Administrator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Mechanical Engineer, recently laid off Engagement Date: August 14, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Rancho San Carlos About Me: I am planning a quirky-crafty wedding with my recently out-of-work fiancé for a (fingers crossed!) warm October afternoon. We are two self-professed nerds with an affinity for all things outdoors---be it rain, snow or shine. Recently relocated from the drizzly Northwest, we're enjoying the many sun-soaked days in the mile high city. Our day will be filled with both of our large families and friends, a self-served Cajun feast, and a Zydeco-style jazz band rocking beneath the beams of a historic red barn.

Hair-y Situations

July 31st, 2010 @ 2:55 pm by Mrs. Husky

Due to the somewhat remote location of our wedding, my options for having my hair done by a professional are somewhat limited. Add to that our ever-decreasing budget, and you get DIY hair! I won’t claim to be very talented at creating beautiful updos with my strands, but I am fortunate enough to have several creative ladies in my bridal party who have all offered to help. Right now my hair sits just below my shoulders, and I still have another four months to grow it out. I definitely want some kind of updo, so I can use the fascinator I made:

(Yikes! Apologies for the lighting—florescent tubes do nothing for my complexion.)

So I’ve been searching for some easy-ish, cute-but-casual updos. Ideally, the style will be natural, without a lot of curl required—my hair is straight, with nary a wave in sight. The less preparation needed before beginning the updo, the better. Here are a few of my favorites so far:

This one looks ultimately simple. Put the hair in curlers in the morning, attack with hairspray, remove curlers, hand-tousle, and pin into obedience. Add hair comb, walk down aisle.

I’m also loving the side braid. You see, my hair just doesn’t look right pulled straight back against my scalp. I call it the “cheerleader ponytail,” where the hair is pulled back so tightly the follicles near the forehead are nearly visible. I think my face looks too big for my head when my hair looks like that, and my “features” (read: nose) are entirely too accentuated. Case in point:

(very mild example demonstrated by my webcam)

My hair needs some texture to it in the front, be that a side part, crown volume, or—my new favorite—a braid! Bangs are unfortunately a non-option for me. The just never look right, and they get in my eyes when I run. Which is unfortunate, because I’m also loving this look on the ever-so-lovely Christina Hendricks:

I sort of love how this side braid blends into the texture of the hair:

I’m also sort of drawn to the larger braid that creates a kind of headband. But I’m afraid the combination of braid headband + flower fascinator may seem a little bit too busy.

My plan is to continue collecting some inspiration photos and invite my ladies over to help me with a hair trial. Maybe we’ll try to mimic just one of the hairstyles, or we might attempt a combination.

How are you planning to wear your hair? Are your bridesmaids helping with your wedding-day look?

Side braids are really fun and very in right now! They are very easy to do…if you can’t do it yourself, have a friend do it.
You can do a simple braid, a small french braid, or an inside-out braid!
A really neat look is to make a tight braid, then pull it out a bit and make it messy. Just make sure it’s pinned so it won’t all fall down!
I love Amanda Seyfried’s full braids: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://media.onsugar.com/files/2010/05/19/3/192/1922153/19650b23b598bd23_Amanda-Seyfried.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.bellasugar.com/Pictures-Amanda-Seyfried-Wearing-Braids-8398931&usg=__o66QIcbV5_u9c35pPQvuJtZlo34=&h=458&w=550&sz=59&hl=en&start=107&tbnid=gK7WBPYq8lFT0M:&tbnh=131&tbnw=157&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dpulled%2Bout%2Bbraid%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D580%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&ei=qIVUTJKSKIH-nAfimYn6Aw&page=6&ndsp=22&ved=1t:429,r:8,s:107&tx=135&ty=60

My makeup artist ran out of time -she had another gig, so my younger sister and BFF did my older sister’s makeup. As for hair -we left it up to the professionals, but either of the 2 “makeup arteests” could probably have fixed my hair in a straight ‘do of some sort. (I have very wavy-curly hair.)

Oh heck ya bridesmaids are helping that is what they are for right!?? Kidding…. But yeah, one of my bridesmaids is a professional hair stylist, so she will be doing the entire bridal party’s hair. (I will be “renting out” the salon). I think all of your ideas are great and I especially LOVE the one with the tousled curls pulled into a messy sort of bun. I have actually looked at doing this for my hair too!

Did I miss the post where you talked about making your fascinator? It’s beautiful!

Out of the inspiration pics so far, I love the first one. But I agree with mrspaetz, be make sure that whoever will be doing your hair practices it before the wedding!

Husky, I LOVE your inspiration!! I’m wearing my hair down, but I love the loose, organic feel to your inspiration photos–I think it’ll look gorgeous with your hair! Post about your practice sessions…I’d love a tutorial if you could do it!!

What’s with the ads on here? Anywho, I would personally like to thank Carrie Underwood, ahem, Fisher for getting married before me so I can copy her hair.

@asdionis: I didn’t do a post about the fascinator - I thought about it, but I made it pre-blogging days, and didn’t take any photos of it. It basically involved a lot of hot glue, a vintage clip-on earring, some scraps of french netting, and a few ostrich feathers. I didn’t know what I was doing (at all) so I was happy it came out somewhat presentable!

Love your hair inspiration pics! Love the braid, but agree that it (might) be too busy with the fascinator. But, practice and you’ll find what looks right plus what is practical to pull off DIY.
