Mrs. Locket's Picture
Mrs. Locket, Ithaca, NY Age and Occupation: 25, Research Technician Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, former Banker hoping to become an Officer of the Law Engagement Date: June 15, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Heron Hill Winery About Me: I am a little bit of everything all rolled into one: A girly gal with rough edges---I love to get dolled up just as much as I enjoy throwing on some sneaks to toss a ball with Mr. Locket. My love for crafting and creating is quite apparent and I've been referred to as a Wonder Woman/Martha Stewart/Stepford Wife hybrid (yup, I'll take that as a compliment). I adore sewing, photography, sculpture, good eats (mmm tapas), baking, snugging and oh, pretty much everything in between (there's not much I dislike). I am super excited to be planning our vineyard wedding and couldn't be happier to be marrying Mr. Locket. We are a quirky, fun-loving couple residing in our college town with our two pups Maple and Molly. We love to go on hikes, visit our local dog park and to bask in the beauty of many of the local falls and gorges. We are an indecisive pair, but together we somehow manage to make up our minds (it's the easy stuff that's tricky).
About Mrs. Locket

Like many gals, I have a minor obsession with shoes and am constantly drawn in by their cutesy, frilly, and oh-so-pretty qualities. Believe me, if I could I would fill my closet with as many jeweled, heeled, and satin pretties as possible, but I have a very unfortunate problem. I am not one of those gals that can try on every pretty shoe and have it fit, and I often feel like the ugly step-sister from Cinderella with the big toes and huge feet.

My feet aren’t huge and gangly, but they are a tad wide and I often have trouble finding pretty shoes that fit. Sneakers are a breeze and flip flops a snap, but when it comes to peep-toed heels and fancy pumps, I run into problems.

The trouble is that I am a size eight and a half, and not all dressy shoes in that size are made for someone with slightly wider than average footsies. I often need to go up a size to find a shoe that will accommodate my duck feet, and this doesn’t always work. The alternative is to search for a wide shoe. You would think it an easy task, but the problem is that wide shoes often look like they were meant for grandma and not for a gal trying to take some fashion-forward steps.

So what was I to do come wedding day? I wanted purple shoes with a touch of bling, but all the pretties I could find came in ill-fitting styles. I decided to do some searching for wide bridal shoes and up popped David’s Bridal. I was surprised to find that they offered some styles in my vision that could be dyed the pretty purple I yearned for.

Check them out:

David’s Bridal, Shellie (shown in plum):

David’s Bridal, Makenzie (shown in white, would be dyed purple):

David’s Bridal, Paige (shown in white, would be dyed purple):

David’s Bridal, Martina (shown in Lapis):

At this point the Makenzie and Martina are my favorites, but I really like the idea of the Paige for when my footsies get tired. I am hoping to take a trip over to DB pretty soon to check out my options and see how well fitted my feet will be in these possible godsends. Until then, I am searching the Internet for other options of the wide variety and pushing my feet into any purple shoes I find as I browse every store’s shoe section.

Did you have an easy time finding shoes for your big day? Was fit an issue for you? Or was it the style? Do you have any suggestions for wide, pretty shoes?

I HATE shoe shopping. I am a size 11 - although depending on the brand/designer, I can range from 9.5-12 ! While most places now carry larger shoe sizes, they make the mistake of assuming that all women with larger sizes also are wide or very narrow. I fall into neither category. My biggest problem is finding a shoe that fits along the sole of my foot without my heel hanging off the back or toes being pinched together. I am currently shoe shopping to be a bridesmaid in a friend’s wedding in Oct. I am dreading the shoe shopping for my wedding next year.

I have wide feet too…I was torn between Paige and Martina…I actually got the Martina shoes from dyed in plum…They came out perfect …they are comfortable (although I recommend to break them in a little before the big day) and are much prettier in person than on the website IMHO…Whichever ones you choose, you’ll love them!

Ooooh! Really like the front of the Shellie show, but I really like the height of the Makenzie!…..I LOVE SHOES!! But, unfortunately, I don’t have any suggestions for wide shoes.
I had trouble finding shoes only because I was looking for a 4 inch heel or taller. Although I bought my dress in a petite length, it was still kinda long for me so I needed an extra tall shoe that didn’t look like a stripper shoe, lol.
Good luck finding your shoes….I really like the ones you posted.

The Mackenzie and Martina were my top two choices too! I wound up going with the mackenzie just because i liked the heel being a bit higher and the open back.

Just a heads up - While the Paige IS comfy (I tried it on in store for my wedding) the toe part is actually rather pointy. It’s a little strange looking in person (IMHO) - I’m going with the very top one as my fave! Lower heel height and still lost of class.

The Paige was actually my first wedding purchase. Although my groom loves me in heels, we are the exact same height. I picked them to try on dresses with at David’s and ended up with shoes from David’s instead of a dress! I think they’re cute but most of all they were still comfortable after nearly 2 hours of trying on dresses.

i have the exact opposite i have a size 5 foot or a 3 in girls, well my first off no one ever has a size 5 and when they do they are made for slender feet well i do not have slender feet more of a medium size regular foot if you will. and of course ive gotten so deserate ive been looking at the little girls shoes adn they dont exactly make little girl shoes to be elegant looking. in high school for prom my mom would stuff my shoes as she would find me amazing shoes in a 5.5 or 6 but i really dont want to stuff my shoes for my wedding!!!!

I’m another one who feels your pain…but on a different level. I too am a size 11 (sometimes 12, depending on the shoe) - but mainly an 11 and it is close to IMPOSSIBLE to find shoes that fit AND are comfortable. I ended up ordering mine (dyables) online - the site said they ran about a half size big so I thought I’d try the 10…yeah not so much! i mean they were TINY…so I sent them back for the 12’s which were, of course, WAY too huge…so I sent THOSE back for an 11, dyed in my color and I’d love to say they fit “just right” but they were “snug”…I still wore them and they looked awesome…but yeah. I despise shoe shopping!

I have wide feet but was fortunate to find some Coloriffics to wear to my brother’s wedding. The bride was fine with us leaving them white, so I am going to wear them for my wedding, too. They were kind of pricey, and I see no need to buy yet another pair of white shoes when I will likely never wear them again (unless I dye them black).

These are the ones I got: http://www.advantagebridal.com/co5620.html.

I have wide size 10 feet, so I feel your pain. All kinds of shoes are hard for me to find…flip flops included!

Shoe shopping is one of those things I wish I could enjoy… I have a similar problem to babebabe06, my feet are a size 5 and narrow, and I can’t tell you how many stores I’ve been to that just straight up don’t carry size 5! I’ve been looking for flats too, which probably doesn’t make anything easier for me. After scouring the internet, wandering around NYC, and being discouraged 100x, it looks like I’ll be going for my backup plan shoes: white Toms.

As far as your shoes go, I think the Shellie shoes look great, and a nice heel-height compromise!

Hey all - I was reading about your challenges - and I can completely understand - I wear a 6 1/2 ww (sometimes a www). I buy so many shoes, wear them once and they hurt = which is why I started something that might be useful to all of you. It’s an auction site just for shoe lovers - shoes and shoe accessories only. You can also list for swaps on the site so you can find someone (not necessarily a bride on the site) with your same size and taste. It’s usually only $1 to list on the site - but use coupon SHOES and get 5 free listings (sell or swap). The site is http://www.iftheshoedoesntfit.com Just offering a hopefully, helpful option. BTW - Congrats to all.

Those are all so cute. But I can’t wear heels. So for the ceremony I’ll find some cute flats. The rest of the day I’ll be wearing white mary jane skechers! I love them and they are so comfy. Now they have mj’s in white so it is perfect for me!
