As you probably could have gathered from my last post, the YUDU is a nifty gadget with some slight P.I.T.A issues. Don’t get me wrong…I love the convenience of an at-home screen-printing device and all the possibilities it has to offer. But it does have a slight learning curve to it, and if you haven’t done your research prior to playing with it you could find yourself cursing the machine. Fortunately, I read up and did my research, and there was only the occasional misstep and mutter of profanity. I am here to offer input and tips from what I learned in my first YUDU experience. Mrs. Socks, Southern NJ/Philadelphia, PAAge and Occupation: 23, Web Developer/Marketing SpecialistFiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Systems EngineerEngagement Date: September 7, 2009
Wedding Date: October 2010Venue: Ladder 15 RestaurantAbout Me: I am originally from the Midwest, but I love being an East Coast transplant! Mr. Socks and I are foodies and winos to the core---give us a hunk of cheese, some charcuterie and a glass of wine and we could die happy. We have two mischievous Wire Fox Terriers with completely opposite personalities but with a shared love of uprooting anything in our garden. Our backyard garden includes everything from tomatoes and peppers to a fig tree, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries! I love cooking, indie music, and spending time in our wedding city of choice---Philly!
Like many Bees before me, plain ol’ paper wasn’t gonna cut it for our invitations. I wanted something with texture and weight, darnit!
For our save the dates, I used a company called The Paper Mill Store to purchase my paper. I was very pleased with the quality and color of the paper we received, but still felt like I needed something more for the invites.
Enter LCI Paper. LCI is fantastic because you can order samples of their paper to see which you like best! I ordered 6 different kinds of cardstock samples, ranging from smooth cardstock to a really cool, heavy wood grain paper.
It was super helpful to have these samples since I knew I wanted something special, but just didn’t know exactly what it was yet. I also wanted to make sure that Kinko’s could print on whatever I ended up buying, that way I wasn’t stuck with paper that was too thick or too textured.
Unfortunately, the wood grain paper I loved SO much proved to be too textured to print on: Read more…
Mrs. Penguin, Northern CaliforniaAge and Occupation: 27, Weddingbee Editor in ChiefFiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Doctor of Physical TherapyEngagement Date: January 29, 2007Wedding Date: June 7, 2008Blogging Since: September 14, 2007Venue: Winery in the Gold CountryAbout Me: I love the Spice Girls, dogs with underbites, bean burritos, making messes, high fives, avoiding showers, crossword puzzles, blogs, weddings, and blogs about weddings!
It’s been a crazy but rewarding past few years for the hive! The Weddingbee blog updates 7 days a week, and obviously not by magical fairies. Ever since I became the Editor in Chief, the responsibility of updating the blog fell solely on my shoulders, a responsibility that I wake up to every morning, so grateful for the opportunity I’ve been given, and so excited to fulfill! I love Weddingbee. I live and breathe Weddingbee. I take it on vacation with me, and I’m equipped with a host of gadgets that ensure that there is an internet connection wherever I go.
But, the question always loomed: Pengy - what would Weddingbee do if one day you were hit by a bus or struck by lightning?
Good question indeed. It has been long overdue that the blog have more than just one editor! Read more…
Mrs. Sand Dollar, HoustonAge and Occupation: 24, Graphic DesignerFiance's Age and Occupation: 22, Electrical TechnicianEngagement Date: January 8, 2010Wedding Date: September 2010Venue: MacLean ParkAbout Me: I'm a domestic diva down to the core. I heart cooking, sewing, baking, decorating and making sure we have a hand-crafted home. The best part about the wedding is I get to incorporate it all! I make sure I put my art degree to good use by screen printing, craft knife cutting, and a whole lotta graphic design. We're having a big-time party on a small-time budget, and I promise to show you a boot-scootin', barbecue-eatin', finger-lickin' good time! Mr. Sand Dollar and I spend most of our time on DIY projects or traipsing around the outdoors with our two pooches Rory and Juno. I'm looking forward to sharing our journey with all of you!
Mr. SD and I want to exit with a bang. Since we’re on a super-crazy-mega-budget (I believe I’ve mentioned it before, in pretty much every post!), we have one of two options. First, let me set the scene. Indian-Summer night, twinkle lights, tin cans and mason jar candles, barbecue, and pie. Lots of drunk country folk. Which is the better choice?
Mrs. Glasses, Tokyo/Los Angeles, CAAge and Occupation: 24, English teacherFiance's Age and Occupation: 27, English teacherEngagement Date: September 2008Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Parents' backyardAbout Me: I’m an expat living in Tokyo. I’ve been in Japan for almost three years now, where I met my fantastic English fiance. It’s time to leave Japan, so we are planning a fun, intimate, backyard ceremony back home in the suburbs of L.A. in October. Our wedding will be a mix of my love for food, beer, my Japanese culture, and Mr. G’s Englishness. We are on a tiny budget and DIYing almost everything!
Or, in English, hello hive! It’s nice to meet you! I’m so happy to see you all. I’m Miss Glasses, coming at you from the Land of the Rising Sun - Japan!
Ms Seahorse, BostonAge and Occupation: 25, Veterinary Jane-of-all-tradesFiancee's Age and Occupation: 36, former non-profit fundraiser in search of something betterEngagement Date: October 17, 2009Wedding Date: September 2010Venue: Fort Pond LodgeAbout Me: By day I'm a cat-wrangler, vet tech assistant, pet-sitter, receptionist, and pre-vet student, but the rest of the time, I'm a former-roller-derby girl turned dedicated-wedding planner. I love reading, writing, bicycles, animals, roller skating, and antique-y things of all sorts. I'm a vegetarian who likes spicy foods, while Fiancee Seahorse is a meat eater who does not like spices. We live outside Boston with our menagerie: a fifty pound dog, a one-eyed, seventeen-toed, toothless cat, and a perfectly put together cat who has a penchant for pooping near rather than in her litter box. In addition to planning our small lake-side wedding, we enjoy running around with the puppy, playing board games (Scrabble, anyone?), having little adventures, talking about how we should really clean the house more, and maintaining our little garden of vegetables and wedding flowers.
To be perfectly honest, bridesmaids’ dresses are not something in which I am willing to be terribly invested. You have all heard plenty about how much trouble I have dressing myself—and you expect me to dress a bunch of other people who all have different styles and different body types?
Um, H to the L nooooooo thank you.
That said, we did want to have some coherence in our bridal brigade - the people we asked to be in our bridal brigade are super important and incredibly helpful, and we wanted them to be recognizable. We also wanted them to be comfortable, and, especially given our current relationship with money (read: we have very little and are still trying to be alive, keep our pets alive, and plan our wedding), wanted them to spend an appropriate amount of money for them, whether that meant a lot o’ monies or a little bit o’ monies. This meant having a lot of flexibility.
First, we narrowed it down as far as colors go: navy. That was easy.
Then we emailed out pictures of dresses we liked, and then various people emailed us back. Simple, right?
Well, yeah, except their emails said things like: Read more…
Miss Handbag, Smyrna, DE/JamaicaAge and Occupation: 25, AdministrationFiance's Age and Occupation: 27, SalesEngagement Date: Christmas Night 2008Wedding Date: March 2011Venue: Rosehall Resort, Montego Bay, JamaicaAbout Me: I am a Type A, emotional Italian fireball, who on a weekly basis must be brought back to reality by my level headed, calm, cool and collected fiance. We are planning an intimate, all white with hints of black, vintage inspired wedding on the old sugar aqueducts of Jamaica, with 30 of our closest friends and family flying in to witness the occasion. We are not traditional by any means and will be doing things very differently. :)
Let me start by saying my two brothers are my entire world (besides future hubby, of course). We are a tripod and have been since the day my little brother was born. When I got engaged, I immediately imagined them both walking me down the aisle. Then reality set in, and I realized that might not be possible… tear… tear…
You see, both brothers are in the military. One is in the Army and the other is in the Marines. Deployments are a part of our everyday lives. We have become accustomed to worrying, tears, fear, pride, and support for our boys. When we get the phone call that Brother One or Brother Two has received his orders to be deployed, we just take a deep breath and pray. Pray that God will spare our loved ones and keep them safe.
In case you are not familiar with the military, let me explain. The Army has 15-month deployments. The Marines has seven to nine–month deployments. Typically they aren’t allowed to be deployed one year from when they return from a deployment. So say they get back in January, they aren’t allowed to be deployed until January of the next year. Both brothers just got back from their deployments in July of last year (2009). Brother Two (Marines) chose to switch units and be deployed again this year to ensure that he will be in the States come time for my wedding. Brother One (Army) is getting out of the military when his contract is over in September. So I should be totally stoked, right? Well this is where Good Ol’ Uncle Sam steps in… Read more…
Mrs. Hermit Crab, New York, NYAge and Occupation: 24, Youth Director soon to be Grad StudentFiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Medical Student - soon to be Surgery ResidentEngagement Date: October 11, 2008Wedding Date: June 2010Venue: New York Botanical GardenAbout Me: I love all things food, books, our furbaby, Rashi, and adventures with my amazing fiance (oh, and saving the world!). This summer I will not only be a bride, but a bridesmaid, officiant, and attendee as well---it's all about weddings in my life right now, full of so many exciting moments and projects. We're planning a fab New York City wedding weekend full of family, love and lots of color!
I was so so happy (and a little nervous) that my friend asked us (her bridesmaids) to find our own dresses.
She didn’t lay out any parameters except for color. So, I called after my favorite dress, asked if the right color was available and moved forward. About a month after I ordered the dress, I went down to a studio in Midtown West to pick my dress up.
Did you guess correctly? Here I am with Carol Hannah, so excited to be picking up my dress.

Mrs. Pashmina, NYC/Catalina Island, CAAge and Occupation: 28, Arts EducationFiance's Age and Occupation: 34, IT AdministratorEngagement Date: April 26th, 2009Wedding Date: July 2010Venue: Catalina Country Club, Catalina Island, CaliforniaAbout Me: I'm a laid-back Cali girl who moved to NYC for school, and ended up staying for love. My fiance is a quick-witted Jersey boy, a self-proclaimed Foodie and the funniest man I've ever met. Together we love exploring the city streets embarking on our next misadventure---and yes, this often involves eating off food carts and trying "the next big thing". I'm the girl in the sundress, snapping photos and collecting trinkets of memorabilia along the way. As a girly girl at heart, I am excited about our romantic natural island wedding incorporating our American & Filipino traditions.
How sexy do you want to be on your wedding? I want to be sexy but sophisticated. But then I talked to my fiance, and I asked him if he had any preference as to what I wore. And he said, “Slutty.”
Mrs. Husky, DenverAge and Occupation: 26, Systems AdministratorFiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Mechanical Engineer, recently laid offEngagement Date: August 14, 2009Wedding Date: October 2010Venue: Rancho San CarlosAbout Me: I am planning a quirky-crafty wedding with my recently out-of-work fiancé for a (fingers crossed!) warm October afternoon. We are two self-professed nerds with an affinity for all things outdoors---be it rain, snow or shine. Recently relocated from the drizzly Northwest, we're enjoying the many sun-soaked days in the mile high city. Our day will be filled with both of our large families and friends, a self-served Cajun feast, and a Zydeco-style jazz band rocking beneath the beams of a historic red barn.
According to some sources, there is a lesser known line that finishes the “something old, something new” rhyme. In its entirety, the poem was originally as follows:
Something old, something new,
Something borrowed, something blue,
And a silver sixpence in her shoe.
There are some doubts about the authenticity of the last line. It may have been a Scottish custom that was tacked onto the tail of the traditional poem, but it was originally believed that if a bride were to place a silver sixpence in her left shoe, she would attract wealth and success to the marriage. And who doesn’t like wealth and success, right?
Mrs. Cardigan, AustinAge and Occupation: 21, Student/Soon-to-be Special Education TeacherFiance's Age and Occupation: 20, Student/Soon-to-be Accounting Systems AnalystEngagement Date: August 16, 2009Wedding Date: January 2011Venue: Vintage VillasAbout Me: I'm a native Austinite who was raised as a die-hard Aggie. Luckily, I'm a pretty persuasive girl because I managed to convince my high school boyfriend (now fiance!), Mr. Cardigan, to ditch his hardcore Longhorn ways and join me up at A&M, where we currently reside with our adorable dogs, Cullen & Ranger. We're currently planning a bright, cheery wedding with a ridiculous amount of DIY projects that I can't wait to tackle! I love crafting in any form, reading, and margaritas (I think I love them the most!). Organization is what keeps me sane and I love helping others, which is probably why I ended up as an education major. It gets a little chaotic sometimes when you're planning a wedding among all of the papers, projects, finals, and certification exams, but we're having the time of our lives and we can't wait to get started on our journey as husband and wife - and we're so excited to share our wedding with the hive!
This afternoon, I was browsing Dooce (LOVE HER) and I came across this post. In it, a guest blogger talks about a European vacation in which she and a friend meet what they call “a Janice” ––someone who is self-righteous, pompous, and a bit overly helpful. Here, she explains it better than I do:
“Everyone knows Janice. Janice is the volunteer hall monitor for the world. Don’t you know nothing would get done around here without Janice? The world owes Janice a favor without even realizing it, and Janice loves it that way.”
The post was hilarious and got me thinking about inside jokes and how they stick with you. It also has a link to this column that talks about the “language of marriage” and how we all form a sort of secret language with our spouse that no one else would ever understand. It claims that while candlelit dinners and bouquets of roses are great for romance, stuff like this is what marriage is really made of––personal moments that stick with you for a lifetime and remind you of something that you shared together. Mrs. Earrings, Fresno, CA/ Nelson, New ZealandAge and Occupation: 20, Student, Wannabe Writer
Fiance's Age and Occupation: 19, Photography StudentEngagement Date: February 14, 2010Wedding Date: January 2011Venue: Gardens of the WorldAbout Me: I'm a girl from down under who grew up in Indonesia and I'm marrying a California boy. I'm addicted to all things sweet, have never met a chocolate silk pie than can get the better of me, and have dreams of one day being a fulltime novelist. I go weak in the knees for lace, tea cups, and a beautifully crafted sentence. When I get excited about something (whether it is historical linguistics or the Beatles) I tend to go overboard in research, and planning this wedding is no different. Mr. Earrings is my high school sweetheart, my best friend, and somehow we combine all our quirks into one big happy mess.
You wanna know how early we did our invitations? You really want to know? 11 and a half months before our wedding date. Which, in case you’re counting, was right before the actual proposal!
Don’t worry, we weren’t nuts. Well, maybe a little, but hear me out. Basically, we had already been thinking about the wedding for awhile. We had a date and had booked the venue (we had to book it a year and a half before the date because free dates for our venue were disappearing like chips at a picnic). Therefore, we knew all the important stuff that would have to go on the invitations. Read more…
